I nearly left teaching because I was having to hide huge parts of myself, & I couldn’t see people like me belonging in schools. Now, being able to go to work expressing myself is so important. Long hair, nails painted, makeup, cute clothes - feeling free & so so much happier 🥰

I just found out my Mum and Dad can still recite our favourite childhood book Owl Babies in its entirety, despite having not read it for nearly 20 years. They both say it with the same timing and intonation 💛

I think sometimes the distinction between workload & wellbeing is missed. Personally I don’t think it’s my schools job to manage my wellbeing. Wellbeing is personal and different for everyone. It is their job to manage my workload so that it doesn’t impact on my wellbeing.

On this day last year a child in my class made homophobic comments about me in front of my entire class. As a result, I came out to my class that day. We had a really important conversation about kindness, equality, and the acceptance of difference.

i used to be so scared about being ‘out’ as a teacher, and expressing myself honestly in schools. i’ve just finished a parents evening where so many parents thanked me for that, and for showing their children that they can be confident in being themselves. i’m feeling very proud.

Yesterday I went to a local school to turn their spare classroom into a nurture room based on @BottledBook ! The room will be a calm, safe space where children can learn to regulate their emotions & explore their feelings. Lots of work still to do, but I’m excited to see it grow!

I think teachers can model emotional honesty without being negative. When my class asked me how I was this morning I told them that I woke up feeling a little bit sad this morning but I still got up and we can still have lots of fun learning together We have had such a fun day

This morning I found an Apple watch in a puddle and managed to dry it out, find out who owned it, and return it to them. This afternoon I found this massive Frida Kahlo book new, unopened, and wildly cheap in a charity shop. If karma is real she worked overtime for me today.

I got some exciting news today, and I’m thrilled to share that later this year I’ll be starting a PhD researching LGBT+ networks in education! I’m excited for a new opportunity to continue contributing to making educational spaces more equitable and inclusive for LGBT+ people.

i was working in a school today where one of the children is long term sick and unable to come into school currently so they now have a robot which he controls from home allowing him to see & hear the classroom, look around, and speak to the teacher - it was amazing 🤖

One of the most important parts of my day is five minutes each morning where I give the children time to ask each other how they are. I have been encouraging them to answer honestly, listen intently and reply with empathy and kindness.

Today a child in my class identified she was angry, took herself out of the situation to breath, calm down and reflect. After a minute she came back and completed her amazing work. For the first time she did this all independently - I was so proud 🌟

Today a parent told me they were really glad I am their child’s teacher because me being in that school is teaching their child that they can express themselves, be different, be themselves, and be confident with who they are.

I couldn’t teach my planned maths lesson today so I had to improvise a completely unplanned lesson. I think my class made more progress in today’s lesson than they ever have before in my ordinary planned lessons. Teaching is weird.

My Mum put happy birthday balloons up on my birthday (8th January) and we haven’t bothered to take them down yet. Now every day we ask Alexa what famous birthdays are that day and sing happy birthday to a random, usually dead, person. Lockdown has got weird here.

If you’re working with new teachers in September please don’t encourage the narrative that they have to leave their feelings at the classroom door, put on a smile for their class, see teaching as acting, or present perfect positivity all the time. It is so dangerous.

I think the narrative that teachers should always be positive and put a smile on for their class is dangerous. Be positive, but please also be honest. Smile and laugh with your class, but please also show them that it is normal to feel other things. #EmotionallyHonestSpaces

My advice to any teacher is to build relationships before you need them. Relationships with children, colleagues and parents need to be grown before the time comes when they are tested.

I just heard about a school who put up a Pride flag and somebody broke in and tore it down. When they heard about it, the parents/community brought a bunch of Pride flags and now they have loads. Illustrates what I believe - that the majority of people support LGBTQ+ inclusion.

Today I attended the funeral of a family friend, and patron of @BottledBook , who recently lost his life to suicide. As we were leaving, our first copies of Bottled unexpectedly arrived a few days early. Very mixed emotions today, but a poignant reminder of why we wrote Bottled.

For a while I considered leaving teaching because I didn’t feel there was space for me to be myself in this profession. After a long time, I’ve found a way to be myself. I’m in a school where lgbtq+ history and pride is on the curriculum and it feels so good.
