Each crisis that emerges from a DSA elected’s compromised position only makes more clear the flaws of the insider strategy and the need for a different approach: one that centers organizing, agitating + educating the working class around a socialist program.

The strange circularity of crusades against “wreckers” in socialist orgs is that, in the act of purging the organization of wreckers, you split the org and become the wrecker yourself… We need programmatic unity and freedom to criticize, not self-fulfilling calls to witch-hunt.

@escargotpro_ If horse-trading politics inside halls of power aren’t understood by members (or by the public), that’s a problem we should fix. Exposing the undemocracy of our political system helps raise consciousness and allows “all cooks to govern” - both important principles for socialists.

Downplaying the importance of the squad’s strikebreaking vote seems like a form of economism: socialists’ parliamentary strategy is a tremendously important part of how we build a militant labor movement Labor movements need socialist politics, too!

Wrote this on coalitions, which are important in DSA’s fight against reaction and for electoral power. In coalition, socialists must resist class-collaborationism while supporting class independence, freedom of criticism, and socialist unity through difference and democracy! 1/3

How should socialists engage in coalitional politics? Jack L draws conclusions based on historical lessons and recent experiences in the housing struggle.

@alex_lee No, that would be Marxism, and the history of the working class’ struggle for decent housing. Socialists really need to bring more class consciousness to these kinds of policy issues - the housing market (and the government) has had the US working class fucked up for a while!

We’ll have to wait until the budget votes to see how this one plays out, but losing members of a dem party caucus seems worthwhile if it can build more unity around the left bloc’s program and strategic goals

INBOX: The City Council’s new Progressive Caucus has 20 members — down from 35. The 15 who left didn’t want to sign new statement of principles that says members must fight to “reduce the size and scope of the NYPD.” From earlier this week:

“..MUG members must push for the merger of socialism and the workers’ movement. On the one hand, this means convincing activists outside of DSA about the importance of joining DSA; on the other hand, this means fighting within DSA to make it an organization worth joining..”

@hangry__eyes This month: LA-DSA councilmembers voted for cop $$, MDC-DSA councilmember endorsed tough-on-crime leg, and a Boston legislator rage-quit DSA. +NYC-DSA elex voted no on city/state budgets while winning BPRA+increasing their bloc. But this has little relation to class politics?

Socialist electeds shld build consciousness + organization by exposing + agitating around backroom betrayals! Very sharp article from @BeccaRoskill + @prageruydsa , taking some cues from Lenin: political struggle unites the working class across industries! Every cook can govern!

In legislative fights, as in union negotiations, closed-door negotiations are the status quo but often stand in the way of building independent working-class power. What can socialists in office learn from militant unionists’ strategy of open bargaining?

The emphasis on the specific tactical Q of “shld we run on the Dem Party ballot line?” often works to distract us from more important questions abt party-building and socialists’ relationship to liberal-left coalitions that come up all the time in politics. Questions like these:

From Lenin to the Swedish soc dems, leftists have long recognized the need for class alliances and coalitions. The question is: who is at the core of your project and leading it? Who sets the agenda?

“Mass politics” is a confusing phrase to me. Does it mean reaching the masses through elections and broad coalitions, by meeting the masses where they’re at (in their workplaces/homes etc), both, neither? My sense is that the goals are the same but the theories of change differ.

Apologetics for strike-breaking socialist electeds are just a defense for liquidating socialist politics+principles. Many progressives and workers got it wrong. Socialists shouldn't tail that wrong decision! @centristmarxist is on the money here, in his piece for @weekly_worker

If we want to build a fighting mass movement for socialism, we’re gonna need many more principled, intransigent oppositional leaders like Malcolm X - NOT more Democrat Defenders™
