Zouma gets a kick and goes down. The Watford fans immediately deliver a chant I've never heard at a football ground before: "that's how your cat feels."
Woman in the bureau de change just told me I'd get 320 euros for £300 for my holidays. I told her to buck up, be more optimistic and stop pedalling project fear. But oddly she didn't give me any more.
Manchester United were offered Moises Caicedo, but their brilliant, alert and always on the money recruitment department decided not to pursue an interest. So the 20 year old went to Brighton. For £4million. And on Sunday completely dominated the United midfield.
Bizarre the number of people on Twitter suggesting this joke of a Super League is no different from the Premier League. It is completely different. At no point did the PL ever propose being a closed shop. Relegation and promotion were integral from the start.
Still nine weeks of transfer window to go. So this is how I expect Man United to line up in first PL game:
De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Varane, Shaw; McTominay, Fred; Sancho, Fernandes, Elanga; Ronaldo
Ed Woodward is spending a small fortune hiring a PR consultant to improve his image with fans (bloke's been busy, see below). I could tell Ed for free what to say that would immediately cheer the fans up: I resign.
Not a single person with Manchester United at heart will mourn Ed Woodward's departure from Old Trafford. He was a completely useless administrator who presided over decline and fall without an idea of how to counter it. He leaves the place in an utter shambles. Some legacy that.
Very decent of British Airways to text me a profuse apology for the delay on the flight from Accra this morning. And the fact I wasn't on the flight from Accra this morning and indeed have never been on a flight from Accra will not stop me accepting their apology in full.
The money taken out of Man Utd to service the debt foisted on the operation by the Glazers could have allowed every season ticket holder to watch every single match for free over the past 18 years and still the club would have made a profit. And the debt is still there.
Went to Shrewsbury Town today and saw the safe standing area freshly installed. Looks great. And despite what Tracy Crouch seems to believe not remotely frightening.
Once wrote a piece about way in which young Asian cricketers in Yorkshire were routinely discriminated against by a system rigged against them. When I contacted YCCC they said that all the instances I had were historic and it would never happen again. Piece was published in 1990.
Reminder on the day the Glazers decide they will remain at Man Utd, of how a football stadium can be properly updated. Sadly for Utd fans with the owners staying on this will not be happening at OT at any time in the near future. Only decline to look forward to under the Glazers
Huge kudos to Gary Neville over this.
@GNev2
was the first and loudest voice of resistance. And it seems the plotters were scared shitless by what he had to say.
Watching Manchester United at Fulham, I reckon there is one player who has improved more than any other under Solskjaer: Nemanja Matic. From living statue to dynamic midfielder in eight weeks this is some transformation.
This idea that Ed Woodward is some kind of commercial guru is a myth. For a couple of years he upped existing revenue streams at a very successful business. That's it. He did nothing creative, revolutionary or inventive and has left United a dysfunctional mess. Some genius that.
Kye Whyte a vivid example of how delivering facilities is the most important aspect of getting people into sport. When a BMX track was built in Peckham, he went along to check it out. Now he's won an Olympic silver medal.
11 years on since he left Sky, I watched Richard Keys on Qatari television. It was a timely reminder that, despite all our grumblings, things really are much better than they used to be.
Harry Maguire's name booed at Wembley. A rare player who brings the nation together: he is hated equally by non-Manchester United fans because he plays for United and by United fans because he plays for United.
Here's an idea MUFC fans. Instead of forking out yet more on top of your various subs to watch the PPV game v Newcastle on Saturday, listen on the radio and drop a donation to
@mufcfoodbank
Any football reporters covering a Premier League game this weekend remember to take some cash with you. And before you eat the delicious free food on offer in the press room stick the money in the FWA's collection box, raising money for local food banks.
14,000 Blackpool fans are returning to their club today after the longest boycott in English football finally ends with the demise of the odious Oyston regime. Good riddance...
'As visual metaphors go, it would be hard to beat what was going on in Blackpool’s home stadium this week, as years of accumulated filth was being washed away'
@jimw1
News is that the Glazers are in negotiation with Apollo Global about selling a stake of United. Apollo are an appalling outfit who should not be allowed anywhere near the reds. It is symptomatic of the Glazers that they are prepared to do business with the dodgiest of the dodgy.
Lot of standard Twitter whataboutery this morning. But of all the sticks to beat the Glazers (and I've enjoyed wielding a few) FFP is not one. Every penny of the squillions Utd have spent has been earned. Glazers have sucked cash from club and put nothing in. Proper villains.
Just spoke to the chairman of a National League side. The league has said it is now not going to start without fans. But furlough ends next month. Which means there is going to be wholesale redundancy for players, coaching staff and administrators. Disaster looms for many clubs.
Appreciate I am qualifying for the Champions League of parental preening with this, but still. Ellie White makes an appearance on Alan Partridge's sofa tonight. She plays a radical feminist. Can't see how it could go wrong...
Today Joel Glazer has just discovered that MUFC has fans. Since making this astonishing discovery he now claims his number one priority is to listen to those fans. So maybe he should act on what they have been saying for the past 15 years and get the hell out of their club.
After watching them lose 4-0 at Brentford I declared it the worst United performance I had seen in 50 years following the club. Eight months on after winning League Cup and looking good for top four, they are in Cup final. Some turnaround Ten Hag has engineered.
Just been to the funeral of the wonderful Charlie Mitten. Eulogy by
@AndyMitten
was magnificent: poignant, moving and very funny. What a life, properly lived. Have a suspicion the wake might go on a while yet.
Sure he's full of good intentions. But it's all pie in the sky. He still hasn't had his 25% ratified by the board. Usual Glazer technique of nuclear level stalling. Nothing ever gets done at United with them in charge. As he'll find out if they ever get round to letting him in...
Taking it to a 3rd round is just classless. The market has obviously not given them the answer they want! It’s like they’ve made a pact to each other that they won’t go for less than £1bn each family member. (5 of them). If they stay in after all this it will be toxic!
Typical Glazers this: after years of under investment as they bled the place dry, there is huge amount required to get United up to speed. And they'd much rather someone else did the heavy lifting.
Not sure why we should have expected any better of them but the Glazers really are conducting this sale with a gallumphing, clodhopping, embarrassing lack of class.
Love the way so many reporters on here describe their celebrity interviews as "sit downs" or "catch ups". Mate, you had five minutes max, with a PR hovering...
There's two sides to every story. In the case of the proposed Super League on one side is a bunch of greedy bastards. On the other side is everyone else.
I think there's one thing we can all agree on, whether you're a Grealish must play man or a Foden has to start woman: even after a glorious game like that we'd all rather stick our head in a bucket of custard than watch Crouchy's After Party.
Much enjoyed Alison Pearson in The Telegraph this morning explaining for those of us that don't follow Strictly that the expulsion of the lad from JLS was "the equivalent of Red Rum being disqualified from the Derby". Or indeed Wayne Rooney being given LBW at Twickenham...
Just watched Robbo, the new documentary about Bryan Robson. Safe to say if he were in the team United fans would be a lot more confident about their chances at Watford on Saturday. And that's aged 64.
Sadly an accurate summary of a lot of the nonsense boiling around this bidding process. Increasingly looks as if the final legacy of the Glazer era will be them selling United to those who should not be allowed within a million miles of owning the club.
‘Yeah, it’s private wealth, not state wealth. Nothing like city or Newcastle really, so it’s factually incorrect to call it sportswashing. At the end of the day he’s just some bloke, some really, really, really rich bloke. I like what I’ve heard about him actually.’
I've watched United for over fifty years and that was the worst performance I have ever seen. And that includes Watford, Brighton and Liverpool last season...
Hang on, the new owners only bought the club on June 4 - apparently passing all the EFL regulations - when the pandemic had been in full flow for three months. They should have had a clue about what effect it might have. Fit and proper indeed...
Bad news for grassroots football in Manchester. The Powerleague indoor five-a-side Trafford Dome will close on March 21 after a breakdown of negotiations with the landlord Peel Holdings. A generation of footballers now without a home.
Listening to Today: does anyone know when "optics" became a thing? Apparently we can't simply say "this doesn't look good" anymore. We have to talk about the fact the "optics don't look good on this". Why?
City sign Haaland, Liverpool Nunez, United fail with a bid for...Arnautovic. Thank goodness the Old Trafford transfer system has been thoroughly rebooted. Imagine where we would be if it hadn't been.
Quick question (though I think I know the answer): has anyone on here ever seen a more inept litany of incompetence as that surrounding MUFC's attempt to find a new manager? Frankly the only thing that could make it more cack handed were for Boris Johnson to be involved.
@BeardedGenius
He's launching a podcast. Seems to be trying to get "cancelled" in order to claim the only place to hear his views is on the podcast. It's as tedious as it is transparent...
🔺 EXCLUSIVE: Ineos have entered the bidding process to buy Manchester United. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest men, has confirmed that he is officially in the running to buy the club from the Glazers
Nicely put. Rashford was clearly passionate, but tempered his fire with calmness. As a result he completely showed up the kind of modern politician who is schooled in screech and rant. He is a gentleman, they are second raters.
Been thinking about why Rashford campaign worked so well on so many. Is it because civility in politics has become so rare in past few years? The message is opportunity & aspiration. The approach is authentic, polite, persistent and evidence-based. It’s a throwback to a lost era.
@david_conn
Seriously David? Seriously you reckon the Glazers have the best interests of football in mind? This is a power grab using other people's money to sweeten the pill. For once the government has a point.
@toadmeister
Ah right, so by your thinking anyone who is wealthy has to be a mean bastard who doesn't give a damn about his fellow man. Otherwise they're a hypocrite. Nice philosophy yours...
Confirmed. Ed Woodward has stepped down as Man Utd exec vice chairman. Was planning to quit in summer, but tghe ESL fiasco has brought it to a head now
City source tells me that several of the cabinet have substantial positions on shorting the pound. Profit will be hugely enhanced if sterling crashes with a no deal departure on 31 Oct. Surely not true. Policy isn't being driven solely by opportunity for personal gain. Is it?
@Jimbob210712
@1NorthernLegend
If your job is to scout for and recruit the best you are paid to read the future. At Brighton they do it consistently. At United they are singularly failing to do so.
Apologies. Responses to this suggest sarcasm doesn't work for many on here. I was taking the piss out of the response of lots of tweeters every time he misses. Man is a total hero.
Manchester United are being very sure-footed during this virus. Someone behind the scenes is clearly offering very good advice. Suspect - and I may be wrong, I usually am - Charlie Brooks is the person concerned.
Overwhelmed by an odd nostalgia for the days when football clubs were owned by dodgy garage owners, bandit butchers and guys with a chain of TV rental shops and a dodgy comb over.
The closing date for entry in the FWA Student Football Writer of the Year is this Friday. £1000 up for grabs in each of three different categories. You have to be in it, to win it. So get those entries filed. Details below
@tds153
"When we wrote JKR was transphobic and readers should boycott her work we did not mean to suggest she was transphobic or that readers should boycott her work". Blimey.
Ages ago Chelsea was our bridesmaid. Today she got married in Dublin. Four years ago she wouldn't have been able to show her happiness like this. Despite everything the world is becoming more civilised
I write an article despairing at the idea of my club being potentially taken over by fascists and the response on here is magnificent levels of whataboutery.
This is a really good insight into a player who - at £2.25m - is the bargain of the transfer window and further proof Brentford have the sharpest recruitment deapartment around.
