) scored 4 runs, drew two walks, and hit a double and single in Central College's softball doubleheader sweep of Loras College Friday.
How about Montezuma alumnus
@treyshearer10
getting to ball at Carver-Hawkeye last night? Trey started for Truman State and tallied 7 points, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal in an exhibition game against Iowa.
Beto O’Rourke will be making his first campaign stop in Grinnell this week. He'll be holding a Grinnell College Town Hall meeting at Drake Community Library at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Montezuma's
@treyshearer10

Grinnell High's Wyatt Hunter continues to lead Iowa Class 3A in rushing and it's not particularly close. His 468 rushing yards is 140 yards more than anyone else. As for the entire state, Wyatt has moved up two notches to No. 8 on the all-classes rushing yards list.

#iahsfb
We already knew
@GnellBaseball
pitching has been terrific this season, but it's striking to see how much better it's been than everyone else in 3A. The Tigers also lead 3A in strikeouts as well as walks and hits per innings pitched.
Ready for the GHS🏈Factoid of the Week? If Colin Gibson throws at TD pass at West Burlington tomorrow, he'll have thrown a TD in 7 straight games. The last Tiger yo accomplish that feat was Cade McKnight. A DII hoops All-American,
@CM40_
had a streak of 8 straight games in 2015.
Grinnell High 2020 alumnus Jake Hull recorded another strong start on the hill yesterday. In 5 innings, he struck out two while giving up just 2 hits and 1 run in Grinnell College's 3-2 win at Monmouth College.
It appears Tony Stenberg will be the interim varsity football coach at Grinnell High School for the 2021 season. The Grinnell-Newburg Board of Education can make it official at its meeting Wednesday.

Grinnell High alumnus Cade McKnight's college basketball career came to a close today in a 89-88 loss to Eastern Kentucky during the CBI quarterfinals.
@CM40_

Some ESPNU TV time for
@cm40_
last night. Cade McKnight finished with 11 points on 5-6 shooting in a 82-73 loss to Murray State. Indiana State plays at Drake on Tuesday evening.

Honorable Mention: Jared Andrews, Broc Heishman & Jack Hoopes

Central College softball dropped games 2 and 3 at Linfield, ending the Dutch's season and the collegiate career of 2019 Grinnell High alumna

I'm unable to post a photo of the article right now, but in the latest Grinnell Herald-Register is an uplifting sports story about Jake Hull (
@Hull23Jake
) and his decision to stay in Grinnell to play for the
@gcpioneers
basketball and baseball teams.

Congratulations to Gene Blalock (aka
@GeneBlalock50
) for being named the District 3A-5 Defensive Lineman of the Year! Gene had 40 tackles (14 for lost yardage) and 5 sacks this season.
Right before she left for college, I caught up with (the speedy) Meg Doty about her 5 years 🌟 ing in softball for Grinnell High School and what her future holds down the road at Central College.
Macy Harris (Grinnell High class of 2019) is having a great senior season at Wartburg. She's averaging 8 points and 5 rebounds a game while shooting 48 percent as a starter for the 11-4 Knights (6-0 in conference play). Wartburg plays at Buena Vista this afternoon.
2020 Grinnell High grad Lewis Jolly made his college tennis debut today for Macalester College, defeating Marcus Sims (of Martin Luther College) 6-0, 6-1.
Wyatt Hunter remains No. 1 by far in rushing in Class 3A with 1,464 yards. No else has over 1,200. He's also moved up to No. 1 in scoring as well, overtaking Trey Mathis of Webster City. It's close though. Wyatt has 144 points and Trey has 142.
Meg Doty and Central College are 1 win away from the NCAA Division III Softball National Championships! The Dutch defeated Linfield 4-2 in 11 innings in Super Regional Game 1 in Oregon tonight.
@megan__doty
walked twice and scored a run.
The Grinnell High School football team led Class 3A-5 in 10 different stat categories and tied for first in 4 additional ones. This might be my fave though as Tryston,
@GeneBlalock50
and
@willdoty17
all were near the lead.
Sour grapes, yes, but Grinnell's football season ends because Fort Madison played a 2A team, Centerville, who only played eight games (going 2-6). No disrespect to the Bloodhounds, but if we're going to have RPI determine this maybe it's time 3A teams only play other 3A teams.
Checking in on a pair of GHS baseball alums playing in Illinois. Luke Roudabush had a stolen base Saturday for Wheaton. Meanwhile,
@JaydenGibson5
was 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a run for Western Illinois.
Grinnell High 2023 grad Braxton Shaffer made his collegiate pitching debut Feb. 16 for Iowa Central in the 7th inning of a game against UA Rich Mountain. Iowa Central won the game 10-8.
Sandcrab Stadium still is one of the most beautiful sights in all of Texas as far as I'm concerned. Got a look-see on Sunday, and loved the upgrades and new press box.
Wyatt Hunter leads 3A in five stat categories, but he's far from the only Tiger showing up in the leaders. Eli Rose is third in 3A in tackles with 60.5. Owen Coffman is fourth in interception return yards (77), while Kyle Dillon is second in kickoff touchbacks (13).
The first Grinnell High football game with Tony Stenberg as interim coach will be against his alma mater.
@AMS_3737
played football at Benton Community, where the Tigers will visit on Aug. 27

), a 2021 GHS grad, pinned his opponent last night in the 174 weight class as the Dutch shutout Waldorf 46-0.
Grinnell junior RB Wyatt Hunter leads 3A in rushing yards after week one. His 254 yards is 18 more than Tyler Kulhanek of Davenport Assumption. No one else was over 200. As far as the whole state, Wyatt ranks No. 10 in rushing across all classes.
In his final home state appearance,

Grinnell High alumnus
@TGohlmann
wrapped his freshman season of footballing at Cornell College by returning to Grinnell. He recorded a tackle in Cornell College's 34-14 victory yesterday over Grinnell College.
The 96-yard touchdown pass tonight from Brady Coffman to Carson Penyich was the longest pass Grinnell has completed since a 99-yard pass from
@cole_mcgriff
to
@KyleD723
in a 2020 playoff game against Cedar Rapids Xaiver.
One more Grinnell High football nugget from the Benton win before turning the page to Williamsburg week. The win clinched the Tigers fifth straight winning regular season record:
2019: 6-3
2020: 5-2
2021: 6-3
2022: 5-4
2023: 5-2 so far

Jake's full week continued with his fourth collegiate pitching appearance for the Pioneers in the 7th inning yesterday. He helped preserve a 7-2 win over Cornell College, the 8th straight win for Grinnell College.
It’s senior day, but we’ve still got a freshman of the day! Today it’s Jake Hull from right here in Grinnell, Iowa. His fun fact is that there’s a burger named after him at local restaurant Hometown Heroes. Order the Jake Full today!

An overdue Jack Hoopes special teams appreciation tweet! Jack leads class 3A and is fourth in Iowa in punt yards (839). He is tied for third in 3A in kickoff touchbacks (13) and leads the district in those categories + the longest field goal made.
The leading game scorer in NCAA basketball history did a little undercover work tonight. Jack Taylor '15, who scored 138 points in a 2012 Grinnell game, posed as a recruit during an Open Gym session with the Grinnell basketball team at Darby Gym.
I'm making more of an effort to keep tabs on Grinnell High alumni playing college sports. As such I'll pass along some highlights starting right now with Mary Blanchard. She and her Carleton track teammates took 1st place this weekend in the 4x400 relay at the Carleton Relays.
In her final collegiate game, Macy Harris had a team-high 8 rebounds and 5 assists in Wartburg's heartbreaking Final 4 overtime loss to Smith College 61-54. The 2019 Grinnell grad finishes her career with 1,109 points, 493 rebounds, 317 assists, and 173 steals.
Grinnell Tigers (3-1, 2-0) hit the road to play Benton (2-2, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Vinton. A victory would give Grinnell its first 4-game win streak since 2014. Like irony? In that 2014 streak, the third win was against Osky and the fourth win was against... yep, Benton.
Grinnell native Meg Doty is once again being productive in the NCAA Softball Tournament.
@megan__doty
had a first inning single, 3rd inning RBI, and 5th inning walk and run scored as Central College defeated Wisconsin-Superior 10-2 this afternoon.
The 6 points Grinnell allowed last night in a 34-6 win over Benton is the lowest amount of points given up by the Tigers in six years. You have to go back to a 35-0 win over Benton in 2014 to find a lower opponent scoring total.
The official season stats totals are in for Grinnell High football, and
@WyattHunter_28
caps remarkable season with 2,299 rushing yards. That's the 48th highest total in the history of Iowa high school football.
Mary Blanchard closed her freshman track campaign at Carleton College with her two personal best times in the 1500 meters. Her finals time of 4:50.54 was good for 8th place at the MIAC Outdoor Championships in St. Paul.
Brady Coffman is your new District 3A-5 passing yards leader.
@BradyCoffman5
also is first in offensive yards (1,221), passing completions (63), and passing yards per completion (15.7).
Let's check in on a couple of Grinnell High track alums. Isaac Bryant ran the third-fastest 5,000 meters (15:40.64) in Indian Hills Community College history at the Bearcat Open Saturday. Meanwhile, Kendall Praitis-Hill was part of Swarthmore College's 1st place 4x400 relay.
Nearly 13,000 pieces of PPE, including masks, gloves, face shields, goggles, and coveralls, have come into Grinnell or are on their way here from China, a massive undertaking by Chinese students, families, and alumni. Here's a story of kindness:
I've got 2 team stats up my sleeve to illustrate how good the Grinnell Tiger offense has been:
* Grinnell leads 3A in pass completions/receptions with 35
* The Tigers are third in the entire state (all classes) in offensive yards (1,039). And the team in 2nd has played 3 games.
We'll have extensive Tigers football coverage in the GHR this week. A Wyatt-centric record bustin' story kicks it off, and then Thursday's edition will have quotes, more photos, and a look ahead to the Benton game.
Checking in on Jayden Gibson's summer baseball-ing in North Dakota. He's batting .255 with 14 hits and 8 RBI playing for the Badlands Big Sticks in the Independence League.
We're about 25 hours away from the Steve Kriegel Memorial Helmets Trophy at T.T. Cranny. Grinnell has won the last three over South Tama by a combined score of 148-40, including the oddity of two 48-13 games in 2018 and 2020. Tigers lead the overall series 24-11.
Another fun
@WyattHunter_28
tidbit... the 9 TDs scored Friday is tied for the third most in 11-man football in Iowa history. The only two players with more TDs in game were Cap Stephenson scoring 11 in 1927, and Clyde Christensen scoring 10 in 1931.
