Cincinnati City Councilman building a Safer, Cleaner, Greener city; Dad & husband, son of immigrant, Founder/CEO 4Sight, former laborer & P&Ger. ✡️🏃♂️👷
New: our TV spot aired last night on ESPN's Monday Night Football: A Safer, Cleaner, Greener Cincinnati.
Help us keep it on the air in the next few weeks & reach more voters to keep me on City Council! Thx to everyone for all of your support!
Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett perjured themselves in the Senate Judiciary Committee when they said that Roe v. Wade was “established precedent.” They said it under oath.
@thehill
Taxation without representation. Pure & simple. DC residents should have representation - whether as their own state or a part of MD (from which it originally was a part). Either way they need representation. Not up to a Senator from AR to decide who represents them.
Symbols matter. Thank you to the City Manager for agreeing to light the Cincinnati sign in blue and white tonight and the next few nights in solidarity with the people of Israel at this most difficult time
Major policy news: the City of Cincinnati can now lower speeds on all city streets except State Highways! Having worked with DOTE and Law for months, this is a major development - and new tool in the toolbox to make our neighborhoods safer & more vibrant
This is great news for our downtown and a part of a bigger strategy to increase residential housing in our core at all levels (Macy's building being another big one plus several rehabs of vacant buildings in OTR last week approved).
In Cincinnati we're changing the character of our downtown one surface parking lot at a time. This month, City Council will have its final vote to ban any expansion downtown. There are so many better land uses; ⬇️is a great example with housing, retail + more parking & more taxes
This eliminates required gun training, including shooting practice, & lets people carry without a background check; why the OH FOP opposes it. After 3 shootings in the last 2 days in
#Cincinnati
, this is a step in the wrong direction.
@MomsDemand
Thank you Cincinnati for your trust. I am humbled by it and cognizant of the obligation to now make a meaningful difference in our city. I couldn’t be more thankful & energized to lead on safer streets, a Greener Cincinnati & an economy that grows w/good paying jobs.
I'm excited to introduce this today. There are multiple city-owned vacant lots & surface parking that have significant potential for redevelopment into housing, retail, etc. which brings more residents & vibrancy (and earnings tax) to the city.
Disturbing: last night KKK flyers were distributed in the Clifton neighborhood including on Bishop, Lorraine, and Brookline. I am not re-posting the flyers because I refuse to spread their hate. This hate is not Cincinnati & does not represent us!
The city’s first stop bump is up in Pendleton - the site of where a child was hit because someone did not stop at the stop sign. Thx
@WeMoveCincy
for exploring these new solutions to make our community safer
Need more of this in Cincinnati. These exist throughout neighborhoods as existing housing stock (eg Hyde Park, Walnut Hills, Clifton, etc) but are not legal now to build new today
This is a big announcement. It is not the 3C&D announcement (that will more more rail to Columbus, Cleveland and Dayton), but still an important step to building a more robust transit ecosystem to and from Cincinnati.
New today - the Federal Railroad Administration is recommending two new major Amtrak routes through Cincinnati - and it wouldn't replace existing service nor impact the possible route through Ohio to Columbus and Cleveland. Details tonight at 5.
@local12
Drove car to meeting in Northside to talk to a resident about pedestrian safety. On my way back, at Hamilton & Pullan I stopped at the red light. Car behind me went around me crossing double yellow thru the red. Enforcement needs to be a part of the solution.
The City of
#Cincinnati
will spend $17M on road repaving this next year. 100% of that is from the general fund. Not $0.01 from gas taxes (or other user fees) 4 city roads. That’s a 100% “subsidy”. Public transit does not get a 100% subsidy in Cincinnati. A little recognized fact.
More photos from the Crosley building yesterday including what was the executive suite for Mr Crosley that will be fully restored as a common space for residents (<60% AMI). We need more of this - building truly affordable housing while restoring historic buildings that are gems!
Big news: we just were awarded an OH grant for $510,223 for pedestrian safety around
@uofcincy
with no local match! This will make significant improvements to safety along Jefferson, Clifton & MLK with Phase 1 done by Aug 2024 & Phase 2 by Fall 2024! Safer streets for
@uofcincy
I am interested to know who funds the “Frederick Douglas Foundation of Ohio” and therefore this billboard in Avondale. Skeptical…I googled but nothing easily visible/transparent. Anyone know?
I will be introducing this motion tomorrow along with a few of my colleagues. A Leading Pedestrian Interval is a no cost (other than people) change that can be made to reduce crashes, which will save lives in
#Cincinnati
I will be offering a motion next week to do this vs spend $2.8M on extending the Central Parkway bike lane via a shared use path. And to ask for options on spending the “savings” on building out more protected bike lanes downtown to connect to the riverfront and major employers.
You could easily remove a lane of traffic on Central Parkway with virtually no impact on motorists. Central Pkwy through downtown has about 12k vehicles per day and 8 lanes. Ludlow through Gaslight Clifton has the same traffic and half as many lanes.
I'm super excited to support this - capping of Fort Washington Way. There is a funding path and visualization of what this could be: a park connecting the banks & downtown and adding new vibrancy along 3rd Street and
#Cincinnati
Thx
@PeteMetz513
4 your leadership on this!
I’m voting NO on State Issue 1 for 3 reasons:
1️⃣ It’s undemocratic, rushing through a major amendment in a low turnout August election.
2️⃣ It’s a blatant ploy to take away reproductive freedom this Fall.
3️⃣ It ends majority rule as we know it.
#VoteNoInAugust
Amazing how few surface parking lots there are in Boston (and DC, NY, San Francisco...). Surface parking lots kill urban vibrancy & the environment. There are better land use choices in Cincinnati.
This is how it is done. Thx
@RoadmapCincy
for implementing the new policy to not permit sidewalk closure during construction. It is making our streets safer.
In
#Cincinnati
this Fri 12/1 is a pivotal moment ⬇️. With 40K off-street parking spots already, we have proposed to ban any expansion of surface parking downtown. But there is significant opposition. This is about everything
@StrongTowns
is about 1/2

When the downtown Kroger was first announced
@CincinnatiPhil
posted this picture.
I don’t think anyone can overstate how much that building has changed downtown.
We (Cincinnati voters) need to repeal the ban on speed/traffic cameras in the Charter.
We can then talk about how we implement in an equitable way. That is a concern but one that I believe we can address.
Data shows that they work. Speed kills and we can solve this.
This map from Page 93 of the 1948 Cincinnati Master Plan says it all. Plan was clear: build expressways (aka highways) right through the heart of our city & neighborhoods. Building the city for cars & traffic not people. Now we need to put people first w/Complete Streets
A reminder that tree canopy = lower temperatures in a neighborhood, which means healthier air & lower air conditioning bills. There is a 12 degree difference in Cincinnati by some neighborhoods b/c of a lack of trees. Our investments in tree canopy is addressing this issue.
Who says multi unit housing somehow has to be an eyesore - we have great examples throughout the city (including this in Walnut Hills) that show otherwise.
The economic development choice is clear. Current location of Kroger store/apartments now vs surface parking lot before. $0/year before vs $200K+/year now (not including sales tax, "multiplier taxes" of having more people living downtown). This is the city we need to build.
Cincinnati City Council is poised to extend a near-ban on new surface parking lots downtown, but a key vote will come a day after members expressed concern in the face of opposition by a major parking lot owner and political donor.
Eye opening data - total public $ spent in Cincinnati on parking: >$155M over 8 years or avg $19M/yr. + we spend $17M/yr on street repaving. $0 is from gas tax; This is a subsidy. The $1M/yr subsidy for the streetcar or any small bike lane investments are minuscule by comparison
Ohio law precludes local municipalities from setting speed limits within their own jurisdiction. The result: cars speeding 40-50+ mph in front of houses/apts where kids play. We've seen a 7 year old girl & pregnant woman killed. Soon, I will put forward a solution to change that
Commuted on new Wasson Way portion this am between Avondale & Evanston. Can’t wait until late April when the lights will come on along the route. Proud to have fought for 2 years for $400k in funding to meet this community need to make sure everyone is safe on the trail
Yes! This is the
#Cincinnati
that I want to live in. One built for people with irresistible destinations to go to and walk around, connect with neighbors with vibrant biz districts, parks, etc. This is the vision of our city that we need to build toward every day.
It’s been a good week for urbanism & a healthier, more vibrant Cincinnati. 3 historic buildings preserved, 50+ new units of housing, less blight in our downtown and a new shared use path on Red Bank Road connecting to MedPace, the Murray Trail & Wasson Way.
Being in Cincinnati this weekend has made clear how much Indy has to catch up on. We tore down so much of our urban fabric, but Cincy just *feels* like a city. Narrow streets, activated public spaces, contextual urban design, etc.
One of the often unspoken of gems in Cincinnati’s character that makes us unique are our alleyways. Love seeing the different kinds throughout the city!
Thx
@RoadmapCincy
for reopening this sidewalk on Clifton Ave. Permit issued did not allow for sidewalk closure; contractor did not abide. Result: 92 year old hit by car b/c needed to cross street. He is okay fortunately. Reminder of why new policy ti not allow closures important
@copenhenken
I'm tired of people saying riding an eBike is "cheating". Cheating vs what? It is a mode of transport. 25% of car trips are <1 mile and 50% are <3 miles. eBikes mean fewer cars on road - a positive for our environment including the quality of our air, our health (as this shows)
On Monday, Budget & Finance Committee will vote to extend the Central Pkwy bike lane w/current configuration (vs expensive shared use path) & reallocate $1.7M saved to build out protected lanes in other neighborhoods. This is about good gov't (2x more lanes w/already approved $),
@Yair_Rosenberg
@tempkt
We will be lighting a Menorah in
#Cincinnati
this Wednesday at 10am outside City Hall and then displaying another one inside the building as we did last year; just like we display a 'giving tree' inside City Hall.
We do need to be an "oasis" in a sea of hate: Be that welcoming city where everyone can live their authentic life without fear. Thx
@HeyReggieHarris
for the opportunity to say a few words this morning and for your leadership.
Council member
@jeffreysms
is the father of a 22-year-old who is transgender. He said they moved to Massachusetts because they don’t feel comfortable living in Ohio given the “attacks” at the state level.
Jeffreys called city an “oasis” in a sea of hate.
@SpectrumNews1OH
Broken meters send a “we don’t care” message to residents and neighborhoods. And it’s lost revenue for the city. We have filed a motion to address this in Northern OTR. But it needs to be fixed elsewhere. Will be working this.
Yesterday City Council unanimously passed a resolution I put forward asking the state to change to OH Code so we can set speed limits within our own jurisdiction. Next week I will offer a motion on enforcement. 👇is what we are solving for: 92% drivers on Colerain Ave speeding.
Proud to announce that my campaign for City Council has been recognized by
@MomsDemand
. Advocating for gun violence prevention & making a commitment to govern with gun safety in mind is more urgent than ever especially in light of recent gun violence. I will be that advocate.
Director Forrester today confirmed that the city saved $4.6M this year as a result of our municipal solar farm (largest in the country). That is the cost of that energy if the city would have had to buy it on the open market, Green saves $
#Cincinnati
The case for expanding Amtrak in Ohio is clear and now we know the economic impact ($36M) is significant. I am excited to work with
@AllAboardOhio
and a group of local citizens to help push this forward!
This is $8,796/year + gas + insurance + maintenance = >12k/year. Forcing people to have to buy a car vs choosing to is why we need good public transit & active transit infrastructure. Lack of it is a significant contributor to poverty.
Imagine housing on the top of
@CliftonMarket
ala the below examples? Clifton added 0.6 units/year of housing in the past 5 years. Building housing around our core business districts and transit is imperative.
I look forward to
#cycling
to my swearing in on Tuesday and then again on our first official City Council meeting on Wednesday. It will be either taking the bike or
@cincinnatimetro
to City Hall for me - no parking space needed.
As
@CityBeatCincy
points out, there are more acres of surface parking (13% of total) than parks (8% of total) downtown. Plus ~50% of the on street parking is vacant on avg + we have 40k off street parking spaces. We do not need more.
People spend thousand of $ to visit cities like St Augustine FL - to go to a walkable city with character, history, narrow streets w/o cars. Building similar experiences in Cincinnati w/ped friendly Complete St is possible - so don’t need to “escape” to have similar experience
Great meeting with
@BrewDistrict
. Fun fact: ~3 dozen beer tunnels in Cincinnati - the most independent beer tunnels in US (if not world). Mostly b/c Cincinnati brewed Lagers that needed to be cooled pre-prohibition. Opportunity: preserve them. Great anchor for tourism
Thanks to the suggestion of residents and businesses along Main Street in OTR including
@HubOtr
to me &
@KearneyForCincy
to put more garbage cans on the street as a way to reduce the street trash problem. And thx
@CinPubServices
Dir Wilkerson for your quick turnaround
When Amtrak expansion in OH was proposed the last time OKI did not support. I am pleased to share the letter of interest that OKI wrote for this proposed expansion; this letter is very similar to that written by other regional entities in OH. As an OKI bd member, I appreciate it
Today in City Council, when considering surface parking lots downtown, the suggestion was made we should not restrict a private business. The reality is that our zoning code has always done that. For example, I can’t build a slaughterhouse downtown or in Hyde Park.
It's past time to legalize ADUs to:
⬆️Naturally affordable units
💲Build wealth of homeowners
🧓Allow older folks to age in place & families to stay together
I will be introducing an ordinance with
@AftabPureval
and
@ReggieForCincy
to do just that shortly.
@PeteButtigieg
Love the sense of humor! More importantly love your well thought out policies grounded in our values of freedom, democracy and security!
This is exciting! Big opportunity to connect Ohio via passenger rail. Speeds at beginning 60-70 mph but improvements in other states (e.g. IL) have grown up to 110 mph; then becomes even more attractive alternative to car travel. A lot of work to do but right steps in place.
Rep. Greg Landsman, Mayor Aftab Pureval, councilmambers Meeka Owens and Mark Jeffries are here w Greater Cincinnati Chamber President Brendon Cull at Union Terminal for a discussion w Amtrak officials on expanding passenger rail in Cincinnati using federal infrastructure funds.
Being downtown for all the festivities yesterday reminded me of the opportunity to reclaim a portion of our city from highways that bifurcated neighborhoods by capping Ft Washington Way & do the same in the West End w/I-75. Fed $ can help fund a plan.
Excited that we got this $25K grant to continue work on preserving the historic brewery tunnels & buildings! We are “mapping” all of them - don’t know where all are. This is a unique asset
that has significant potential to draw tourists if coupled with other efforts under way.
Thank you Cincinnati for the honor of serving this great city for another two years. I will aspire to live the Cincinnati values that I spoke about today every day in service to this city that I love! With humble gratitude…
Whether it’s a curbside model or a physical location, we need a downtown hub for Greyhound in
#Cincinnati
. It used to be at Fountain Sq ⬇️. It needs to be easily located vs the current location in Arlington Heights.
In the US
@GreyhoundBus
is closing its stations and making its customers wait on the street, bowing to the business model of its upstart competitors. We need a new approach to creating civilized hubs for both local transit and intercity.
@kylegriffin1
This ruling is devastating. We have seen the impact in CA. It eliminates affirmative action but does not eliminate considering legacy, geography and other factors. It will be a more unequal America.
Big news! Cincinnati is the first major city in Ohio to legalize ADUs. It (1) means more housing (2) allows folks to age in place (3) builds homeowner wealth. Thx to my colleagues especially
@HeyReggieHarris
@KearneyForCincy
for their support! Stronger families & neighborhoods
It's official! City Council has just legalized ADU's in Cincinnati. I am proud of this Council and City Administration for all of their hard work in making this happen
Thank you
@WeMoveCincy
for thinking of the not so “little” things in the design of Central Pkwy bike lane. This is a cut out on Ludlow for bikes, scooters, etc to safety wait for the light to change to cross into Central Pkwy w/o having to wait in the street. Safer for All!
This is so deeply disturbing and heartbreaking. The vandalizing of 176 gravestones at the Covedale Jewish Cemetery in the past few days does not represent Cincinnati values.
We must stand united against this hate in our community. It does not represent us.
We need to unite behind
@KamalaHarris
as our Democratic Presidential nominee. She has been Vice President and can take on the campaign infrastructure. Most importantly she has earned the right to be the nominee.
Thank you
@CMReggieHarris
for pulling this together. Visually it is pretty amazing to see. We have 39K off street parking spaces downtown + on street metered parking (which is >60% vacant on average). We don't need more surface parking - there's a better use for that land.
Quite a bit of convo around the downtown parking ordinance my colleague
@ccc_jeffreys
brought forward and I supported. So, my office put together this map of parking that currently exists downtown... 🧵
Why speeds in residential areas in the City of Cincinnati should be no higher than 30 mph max. Between 30 and 40 mph the chance of getting killed doubles.
