Gelling is taken off, asked for a photo by a kid in the crowd and he’s now gone in to the stand and sat with him to watch the rest of the game!
#WIDHAL
The wheelchair rugby league, as most others have noted, is unreal. My main question is how?! How do they do it? How does it not hurt incredibly? How many times do their fingers get ran over?! How on earth do they do so many things at once? I don't feel worthy of even watching it!
A lot gets said about players etc, but there are 18 people who have worked tirelessly, unpaid, to save
@WidnesRL
. Without their dedication and professionalism, the fundraising activity and survival of the club would not have been possible. There should be a tribute to them.
A couple of Leigh fans have just gone and given bottles of water to all the support services (police, St John ambulance etc) at their end at half time. Top class 👏
Clubs interested in Widnes players are apparently being told to back off now by administrators - as they're under contract and there seems to be increasing confidence that there will be a deal struck with a buyer (though who that is, I'm not sure).
There's a scary amount of rugby league you can watch live between Friday 19 March & Sunday 4 April via Sky/BBC/Our League/Watch NRL - I reckon 49(+8 CCup to be scheduled), and none of them clash... 😳
That's 3,920 minutes, more than 65 hours, across 17 days with more to come...
Andrew Voss is going to be part of the BBC's commentary team for the World Cup. Pundits include James Graham and Jamie Peacock, as well as regular faces like Jon Wilkin, JJB, Kevin Brown, Kyle Amor and Jonathan Davies.
Wheelchair rugby league, coming to a sports hall near you soon! England world champions.
Huge opportunity to create spectacles like this every winter at the top level based on this.

'By the time that you watch this I will no longer be here'
A poignant final message from the Leeds Rhinos legend and MND campaigner recorded before his death for a special BBC documentary 'There's Only One Rob Burrow'
@BBCOne
@BBCiPlayer
Just got round to watching this. Brilliant.
Without wanting to talk myself out of a job, I think the majority of stuff like this now in football is only made possible by the unique relationship and insight by having a past player (and/or teammate) as the interviewer.
Widnes players have been told to report to a meeting at the club at 11am in the morning to ask questions and bring their kit just in case... as they haven't been training all week of course 👀
Apparently the only two ways rugby league clubs think they can make money:
- Release yet another shirt
- Re-structure leagues for the millionth time
How about improve commercial output or cut your cloth accordingly?!
This is a disgrace. The sport wouldn’t even exist without the “small towns in north of England”. The way to expand isn’t by alienating the only clubs / fans it’s already got.
The professionalism and attitude of this man has been first class from the moment he walked in the door at Widnes. It’s been a painful few days for everybody who cares and is associated with the club. Without KP I doubt there’d be much hope for the future.
Tough day at the office today for everyone
@WidnesRL
and those associated. We don’t get a lot of things right in RL but one thing we do right as fans, friends, coaches etc is offer support and rally round for each. Thanks for all the messages 👍
Jacob Dugdale could become the 32nd player Widnes have used this season, if selected tonight. He would be the 21st academy product to feature in 2019. The same academy that is still having its funding withheld. Rugby league loves to cut its nose off to spite its face.
Didn't get home from football til 1.30am last night and had a few meetings today, so apologies for lack of updates. I have, however, managed to secure another £500 for the VIQI pot for Widnes Rugby Chat sponsorship - thanks

Koukash says taking the club out of Widnes would be like taking the heart out of a human’s body. Says the response by fans is “bloody awesome” and he never expected it.

Great quote from Matt Cook: "One of the big reasons for me to sign at Widnes and not any other Championship club is that my Dad is a born and bred Widnes lad. He’s chuffed to bits as well. He will be very proud when I finally make my debut for Widnes..."
Widnes to honour 2019 season tickets - but perhaps even more pleasing than that is to see the admission prices confirmed as £20 adults, £5 juniors. No advanced/members etc rubbish. Hope it stays like that for rest of season.
So in under a week, Widnes have managed to get almost 1300 fans to commit to a monthly membership amount, which even at a modest average of £10 a month is nearly £160k a year. Quite staggering really.
We are currently on: 1️⃣2️⃣6️⃣7️⃣ members! 👏 Are next member target: 1️⃣5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣
@MartinMurrayBox
has kindly donated a signed boxing glove 🥊 that all 1500 members will be entered in a draw to win

Fantastic crowd, experience and occasion again at Warrington. Other clubs hide behind the "away fans" argument, not them. Whatever they're doing, others should follow.
Right, I best go home I suppose. Have raised another £700 to contribute to the fund which I’ll put in when I get back too. I’m two signed shirts better off as well by the looks of things. Top job everyone. Some heroes at that club.
After an incredible speech by Finney about the academy, club 20, the thinking behind it, why it’s important (should be sent out to all club owners!) - then TOC reveals that £90k has been raised by local businesses to support the academy.

Rugby league spent quite a bit of time pushing clubs to get new stadia to meet Super League standards (10k+ capacity etc) and now Salford are potentially moving to a 5.1k capacity.
If they were in Yorkshire, maybe they'd have stayed at The Willows.
Well, after 18 years the decision has been made to move on from
@loverugbyleague
.
From starting it up at 17 to it becoming my full-time job, it went beyond where I thought possible and in some ways it's defined who I am.
Now time to find a new dream and a new challenge! 1/
Tell you what, Wigan can't be far off a full house in "Bad PR Bingo". Salary cap deduction, coach u-turn, chairman not signing contracts, marquee man apparently off to NRL, player drink driving, now player fails drugs test. 🤯
#rugbyleague
A cracking weekend of rugby league. The RFL’s sterling work on their channels in maximising it shouldn’t be ignored. Plenty of action clips, posted at the right time, content on a par with NRL. Plus BBC and OuRLeague live coverage. 👏

A year ago today - Widnes were relegated from Super League, prompting a statement from James Rule begging the fans to keep giving their money. Managed to keep him going for another six months. Might not feel like it yet, but club in such a better situation now.
Just leaving Widnes ground now. Spent some time talking to people I have previously worked with and consider as friends, shame for them to have to go through this because of the greed and incompetence of others.
It’s ironic that Wakefield are live on Sky tonight, because
@MichaelC1873
has done with that club makes a mockery of every excuse James Rule has ever come out with or blamed at Widnes.
Salford showing what it’s all about - doesn’t matter who you are, how much money you’ve got, how many fans you have, how fashionable you may or may not perceived to be. 80 minutes on the pitch. And they’ve been outstanding.
Jack Owens says as soon as told going part time, he told his agent not to look for full time offers as he wanted to stay at Widnes regardless. Says he was done with rugby after his year at Leigh. Now keen to sort his life out for after rugby. Also wants to help Widnes back to SL.
Super League clubs insist on loop fixtures and double-header games to scrape more money off fans - yet completely undermine the whole league table by playing weakened teams. Why should fans bother with any of the other 26 games if they're so meaningless they can be thrown away?
Sounds like some amazing things are happening down at the stadium in aid of Widnes, lots of people still there doing their bit to fundraise and get the word out. Humbled and thankful to Phil Finney and the others I spoke to, see you tomorrow.
#thisisourclub
I remember Ken Davy saying Super League didn't want to be about "men in suits". The disciplinary sideshow each week has probably overtaken the actual action itself now in terms of interest and engagement. They could sell tickets for it and hold the review panel in arenas.
200th different ground for me today and a belter. A new stadium it might be, but it has an unrivalled story and context. Could be a great venue for rugby league.
If Super League clubs must persist with playing on a Friday night, then hopefully a new broadcast deal could feature a 'redzone' type production which switches between games to show tries and key moments (with the option to watch one featured match in full if preferred).
Widnes Rugby League Club Limited registered with Companies House today - likely to be the new owners of Widnes Vikings, ie. the consortium, as per
@M_Shaw1
's recent tweet.
I don’t understand the apathy towards the 1895 Cup. A trophy to play for and gives teams the chance to play at Wembley that would normally have next to no chance. Typical rugby league response though? Moan about it.

The modern day world is not worthy of such a humble and kind hearted man. Well done to Dan too for using his position to influence and reward such selfless, extraordinary respect and commitment; stark comparison to those who use their influence to spread vitriol.
If Toulouse stay up, having lost their two best players on the eve of the season, I don't want to hear any moans about promotion and relegation again 🙃😅
#sportnotboxticking
Tell you what, Jack Welsby is the sort of player rugby league needs to get hold of and make sure every sports fan in the country know who he is.
"Sorry, gotta go...!" 😂
Just while I’m eating my tea - have had confirmation of another £500 raised for Widnes for sponsorship of my podcast. I should add if there are any fans meetings tomorrow I can’t live tweet as I’ll be working at football earning my corn! 🙌🏻⚫️⚪️
It'd be nice if rugby league could find a happy medium between "rugby league is dying" (it's not) and "rugby league is the greatest sport in the world" (fans of every sport think theirs is the best).
The truth is, and always ought to be, somewhere between the two.
Batley 18 Widnes 24 FT. Almost perfect second half from Widnes, who scored 18 unanswered points through four tries. Both teams finished with 11 with two sin bins each in the same incident. Five wins in a row for Widnes, and John Kear maintains 100% record as coach.

Semi-Final between
@WiganWarriorsRL
and
@Saints1890
peaked at over 1 million viewers and pulled in the highest audience share in the UK for any game of Rugby League since the 2017 World Cup Final...
Fascinating piece. I’d say the only player in the past decade who has tried to make a name for himself beyond the inner circle of rugby league is Sam Tomkins, and was often criticised for it. Have said it before, RL needs more like him.
Willie Poching absolutely spot on with his comments here...
"It’s just surprising that people start shooting off after the fact and after they’ve retired.
"If they feel it’s an issue, they should speak about it when they’re playing and help others."
Hard not to feel sorry for Blake Austin. Sold down the river by his own coach’s completely inadequate squad selection. Not sure his GB debut will be a cherished memory.
Two beautiful national anthems. Another disappointing crowd at Warrington. Whatever you attribute the reason to, it's clear they've got it wrong here.
#RLWC2021
Logan Tomkins has played for Widnes before of course - on loan in 2011 along side Joe Mellor and Dom Crosby - scoring 6 tries in 14 appearances.
A superb signing, real coup for Widnes, and the squad really coming together now. All English so far also.
Warrington's biggest problem is that they still aren't producing good enough players of their own. There's no short term fix for that. The fact they're having to sign academy products from Widnes every year says it all.
#rugbyleague
The way the loan market is going in rugby league, the RFL might as well create a centrally contracted player pool and clubs dip in when they want first come, first served. The supposed "honour" of pulling on a club's jersey being rapidly diminished.
Reading some absolute nonsense from Widnes fans slagging off the board/CEO re: Hep Cahill; some of the same people who would never have a bad word said about James Rule!
Hep is an absolute champion bloke, a true warrior. Sad that club couldn't afford to keep him,but that's sport
Warrington coach Daryl Powell said he'd be fuming if he was a fan that had travelled to watch that - and has offered to meet with anyone that travelled and explain how he wants to turn things around.
Bradford 12 Widnes 25 FT. A real team display by Widnes, who were brilliant to a man. Only used 15 of the 17 too, shows they can do it even with a few missing. Smith managed the game very well in final quarter to see it out.
On this day in 2002... Widnes played their first ever Super League game, going down 14-15 at home to St Helens in front of 8,644 at the Halton Stadium.
BBC match report:
Rolt: “I know the fans have been starved of this, and I apologise.” He thought the club had lost this because of the negativity from recent years. Incredible words. “We haven’t lost that feeling. Proud of our little town.”
