Let me tell you some truths the public needs to know too! I worked in a Microbiology Department of a Teaching Hospital owned by the Federal government of Nigeria! Doctors forced themselves to be rostered to do night calls as Medical lab scientists. These guys do rubbish

For MLS students. The first thing you do when you receive some consumables like culture media is to quarantine it(not safe for use yet). Second thing: Test the media(batch acceptance). If it passes, you can proceed to use it. This is standard practice.

Have you heard of Fecal transplant? I mean poo or stool or shit transplant! This is not a kidney or liver transplant we know but poo!! It might sound a bit weird but it's not very new. Fecal transplant is a unique treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection.

When you make a Thick film for malaria Microscopy, and place the slide over a newspaper print, the printed letters should be visible for a correctly made film. If you don't have a way of checking the quality of your thick films, use this one. Thank you !

Mueller Hinton (MH)agar is what is widely used for manual sensitivity test for non fastidious bacteria in a microbiology lab. If you buy new MH agar or prepare new ones, you must do "batch acceptance" as shown in the attached pix👇👇

If you work on respiratory samples like throat swab, when you see this on a Chocolate agar, you are most likely dealing with Haemophilus influenzae bacteria or other species of Haemophilus. If you do not have the means for proper ID, do Gram, it's a GNB /coccobacilli.

Power of colour Same bacteria, grown in different agar. This is Salmonella sp from positive blood culture. You see the milk-coloured plate? it is a chromogenic agar for salmonella identification. And that colour tells us what we want to know !

How Salmonella species colonies look like on a chromogenic agar(SALM agar). Even with this colour, advanced laboratories still go further for proper identification. This is more reason, misidentification and or misdiagnosis is very reduced.

From my experience, I have noticed that most mucoid colonies on McConkey belong to any of : Klebsiella Enterobacter Escherichia coli, in that order In the attached images, one is E coli, the other is Klebsiella. If your facility does not have a means of proper identification
