Had a small eureka moment about how to push this further. You can bake the decals from decalmachine to a normal map, then import this to Painter to use as a micro normal input. This way it contributes to the generators, giving you edge wear and dirt on decals too!

For low detail surfaces and props, I'm just using tileable paint stroke masks. Vertex colour provides base colour and value, and then the mask adds the juice. These all use one material and one tiling texture, and then get some grunge from a procedural AO node.

Fixed the render issues and did a quick lighting pass to see how the surfaces were playing. Re my last post about it being too stylized, I've started to approach it a bit more like a realistic prop - adding some more mid frequency roughness and height noise, think it works well

Got a nice gradient on these lights thanks to the linear gradient node combined with some mirrored UVs. Because it's UV based, not a bespoke mask, I can use the UV editor in Unreal to control the values of the gradient, and can easily create duplicate meshes with different UVs

The worst thing is those students won't even know they're being misled. Students put blind faith in what lecturers say because of perceived experience and status. Students trust that uni's know what they're on about, and they get taken for a ride because of it.
