Parliamentary candidate for Norwich South: Published & promoted by Martin Schmierer on behalf of Jamie Osborn & Norwich Green Party at 213 College Road. Dad. π
This must be one of the most spectacular failures to answer a question that I've seen yet at Norfolk County Council.
Did building the Northern Distributor Route increase carbon emissions?
@NorfolkTories
, I'd still like an answer, and I'll ask it as many times as you like!
SUVs are 8 times more likely to kill a child than ordinary cars, produce 25% more planet-heating CO2 emissions, and poison our air with toxic fumes.
They are utterly unnecessary in a city like Norwich.
We should charge SUVs for their costs to society.
Possibly the most beautiful singing I have ever heard on Parliament Square tonight, as police carried away
@ExtinctionR
activists from southwest corner. Police now left, Square is peaceful, plenty of activists bedding down for the night, including some
@NorwichXr
.
Honoured that I will be standing for Parliament in Norwich South.
As
@TheGreenParty
's candidate I'll aim to tackle inequality and climate change at their root: insulating homes, taxing wealth, and bringing energy companies back into public ownership.
Sending solidarity to all the trans and non-binary people in Norwich South who'll be receiving leaflets from "the party of women" in Norwich South, telling them they don't exist. Appalling treatment of people who offer so much.
I and
@NorwichGreens
stand with you. π³οΈββ§οΈππ€ππ€
Big news: Norwich will have an independent, expert-led climate commission, in place before COP26.
This is exactly what we need to lead on cutting carbon across Greater Norwich.
@NorwichGreens
councillors have been lobbying for this for years. So pleased it is finally happening!
Why would you not support energy efficiency in homes??? Norfolk's Conservatives have just voted against my amendment to introduce support for energy efficiency to their cost of living motion. (Oh, and their motion takes no responsibility for 12 years of austerity...)
The Greens are Norwich's second party. We can beat the Conservatives on 4 July.
People want change. They want decent and affordable housing, GPs they can see, and urgent action on the climate emergency.
That's what I am standing for in Norwich South.
#VoteGreen2024
My motion for a Green New Deal for Norwich, passed by the city council his evening! Labour voted against a Citizens Assembly and against carbon targets. But the bulk of the motion passed, including calls for better union representation in the transition to a low-carbon economy π
ποΈ4,000 people on the council housing waiting list in Norwich
πKeir Starmer has ruled out providing funding for councils to build the council housing we need.
β
@TheGreenParty
is committed to 150,000 new social homes a year.
#VoteGreen
for decent homes everyone can afford.
Last weekend, Victoria and I got married. We couldnβt have everyone there who we would have wanted, but that's all the more reason for another party... For now, we are both still buoyed from the weekend. Thank you to everyone who has already sent well-wishes!πβ€
So incredibly pleased and proud to have been elected in Mancroft for the third time β with 62% of the vote for
@TheGreenParty
π
π Thank you so much to everyone who's helped with our work in the ward over the last years, and to everyone who voted Green yesterday π
π¨BREAKING π¨ Norfolk County Council have NO contingency reserve if the Norwich Western Link fails. If it fails, the cost will completely wipe out their general revenue reserves at Β£20million. This is huge.
@NorfolkCC
is gambling with Norfolk's financial future.
@StopWensumLink
Getting lots of people on the doorstep saying that they can't vote for Labour againπ₯
They want someone committed and trustworthy to represent them π
According to Clive Lewis's Office Manager for three years, that someone is me π
Join
@TheGreenParty
Possibly one of the riskier things I've written but I hope more people will recognise their eating disorders sooner and get treatment. π
@beatED
has great resources and offers support
Some
#extinctionrebellion
action on Parliament Square this morning, one
@NorwichXr
conscientious protector arrested. Activists outsang and out-glued and out-sat police, and the Square was again held in good hands.
Tory councillor says that there will be some "temporary disruption to the countryside" from the Wensum Link. Cutting down ancient woodland that has been around for more than 400 years and cannot be replaced... What is his definition of "temporary"??
@StopWensumLink
Really pleased to propose a motion for Norwich to pilot a
#UniversalBasicIncome
- to help end poverty, widen opportunities and underpin a greener economy.
UBI has long been a
@TheGreenParty
policy that's finally being taken on cross-party.
Great to have the Green Partyβs new leaders
@carla_denyer
and
@AdrianRamsay
in Norwich today after our string of election victories. Really excited to tlbe building on those successes!
Absolutely overwhelming response to today's
#WitnesstheWensum
protest - hundreds out to honour this unique and irreplaceable landscape and tell
@NorfolkCC
we cannot have another new road here
Farcical. I just asked Cllr Martin Wilby whether he accepts the evidence that building the NDR increased carbon emissions. He didn't answer. I asked him again...
and again...
and again...
and he still refused to answer the question.
@StopWensumLink
The Tories are scrambling to find something to show for their record in government and are desperatelyΒ making uncosted and undeliverable promises.
If it goes ahead, the Western Link would be terrible for taxpayers and the environment.
@StopWensumLink
1000's of jobs in Norwich in insulation and renewable energy for decent, warm homes. Delighted that my motion on behalf of
@NorwichGreens
proposing a programme to achieve that was agreed to by Norwich City Council last night! π‘π‘π‘
Good morning! π Already had people stopping me to say they were voting for me and to thank me for all the work that
@NorwichGreens
do for Mancroft Ward π

taking the climate emergency message to City Hall in Norwich. The chants of "Save our planet" could be heard inside the council. Massive respect,
@NorwichYouth
Been a year since this happened! Sharing some things I've done over the last year, not because I want glory (though some of thatπ), but because now more than ever it's important to shout about what councils do, especially councils with
@YoungGreens
on them.

Brilliant and very telling episode of

yesterday, exposing how the Norwich Western Link will have a "catastrophic" impact on endangered bats. So good to see
@LottyPackman
's research getting national coverage.
@StopWensumLink
πππ Thank you so much to everyone who supported our campaign, to everyone for congratulations and above all thank you to the voters in Mancroft Ward who clearly backed a strong Green vision for Norfolk.
Looking forward to the next 4 years! πππ
πΏ Three new

Well done for a fantastic and positive campaign π

I'm meant to be on
@BBCNorfolk
this afternoon to talk about how Norfolk County Council still back climate-wrecking infrastructure despite all the evidence of a "code red" on climate change. I'm not sure I'll be able to hold myself together after the IPCC report this weekπ
Such a privilege to be joined by
@TheGreenParty
co-leader
@AdrianRamsay
for doorknocking in Norwich today, talking about the work Greens are doing to get homes insulated across Norfolk and bring down the cost of living π‘
And of course working to
#GetGreensElected
π
Number of homes that we need to insulate every year in Norwich: 3,300+ π π‘
Number of homes actually being insulated by the council: 50. π
I am working to get the council to adopt new sources of finance for a much more ambitious retrofitting strategy.
Top priority for
@NorwichGreens
at County Hall: stopping the Wensum Link road. We'll fight so hard for that, alongside other campaigners and councillors who oppose this madness.
Great to hear
@AdrianRamsay
on
@BBCNorfolk
this morning calling for real action as COP26 starts, including:
π‘ Well-insulated homes
β‘οΈ Affordable renewable energy
π² Sustainable transport (not more roads!)
π·ββοΈ Green jobs
All of which could be funded by a tax on polluting companies
Out in Sewell this evening with the phenomenal Sandra Bogelein supporting the equally phenomenal Alex Catt

We did it!!!! πππ Big love to everyone who helped with this campaign. Looking forward to representing people in Mancroft who have shown they care about climate change and democracy in Norwich. Lots of hope, locally and nationally. πππ

Great news that after years of campaigning from Greens alongside
@StopWensumLink
, Norwich Labour Party has finally recognised that WE HAVE TO STOP THIS ROAD.
We'll continue to work to get
@NorwichLabour
city councillors on board. Watch this space!
π Norwich City Council have just confirmed that they will install solar panels on their major new depot - something
@NorwichGreens
councillors have been pushing for persistently. Great news that shows the difference that elected Greens can make π
Just heard that the Norwich Western Link will be refused a license by Natural England.
Huge, fantastic news!
This Β£270m road has been doomed from the start. The Conservatives have wasted taxpayers' money and put Norfolk's future at risk.
@StopWensumLink
The Leader of
@NorfolkCC
just told councillors that the solution to the cost of living crisis is people on low incomes "taking more personal responsibility" for how they spend money. Sadly all too familiar a line from the Tories.π‘
Out in the sun speaking with people in Thorpe Hamlet about the work of Cllr Ben Price getting and extending 20mph for residential streets. Lots of appreciation and lots of
@TheGreenParty
votes! π
Just been on
@BBCNorfolk
to talk about
@TheGreenParty
's call for a Frequent Flyer Levy.
This is a climate policy that is fair and would mean the wealthiest pay their fair share. Really pleased that it got a positive reception from the BBC team π¬
In a two-mile stretch of the Wensum, there were over 1,000 spills of sewage, together lasting more than 16,000 hours in a single year from 2019-20.
This week I questioned Anglian Water and the Environment Agency about the spills. Thread below...
Still so thrilled from yesterday. But I also want to say thank you to Labour's Danny Douglas for all the work he's done for Mancroft for the last 4 years. I've heard from many people how much they appreciate Danny's work and kind heart. Mancroft has been lucky to have him. β€οΈπ
The Tories have trashed the economy, and the current Labour leadership is moving further and further away from the things that Labour voters value.
More and more people are telling me they'll vote
@TheGreenParty
in 2024.
My interview with
@EveningNews
:
I'm on
@BBCNorfolk
on Friday morning to talk about
@NorfolkCC
's disastrous response to the climate crisis.
Almost every time I go on the show, the Tories refuse to take part in the debate. Let's see if they show up this time.
You can't hide from climate change
@NorfolkTories
π
There has never been a case for the Norwich Western Link βΒ but now even
@NorfolkTories
' fabricated one is falling apart. There will be no economic benefit to the road, only untold environmental damage.
Far better to invest in public transport that will be fit for the future. π
Norwich out in force to defend the right to peaceful protest, rights for GRT, and others whose voices would be crushed by the policing bill.
#KilltheBill
At Norfolk County Council's budget meeting today, preparing to present
@NorwichGreens
amendments to:
π°bring down the cost of living
π±tackle climate change
πββοΈimprove democracy through a citizens assembly
π»improve quality of life through cleaner air
About to go on
@BBCNorfolk
to talk about the closure of the NHS Walk-In Centre on Rouen Road (spoiler: it's a bad idea and people are rightly speaking up against it)
Council leader Andrew Proctor claims Norfolk is a "car county". I am proposing a motion for calling for the council to measure the carbon budgets of its transport and other policies. Time to look again at whether a commitment to cars fits with the climate science...
Students in Norwich are forced to pay upwards of Β£700, Β£800, Β£900 a month for bedsit accommodation. Not only would
@TheGreenParty
scrap tuition fees, we're also fighting for rent caps and to get adequate maintenance funding for students
π¨ BREAKING: Labour refuses to rule out an increase in university tuition fees.
Bridget Phillipson, Shadow Education Secretary said on BBC Question Time: "We need to look at all of the options"
"Norfolk County Council has to accept the future, and not just keep going back to the past of road building" π
@Transcendental1
absolutely brilliant speech on how Norfolk County Council is still obsessed with roads.
Things are afoot in Wensum Ward. Really heartwarming to hear so many people saying they'll be voting for
@NorwichGreens
candidate Liam Calvert here on May 5th. πππ
Last week I met
@NEUnion
President
@louiseatkinso14
and discussed the campaign to extend free school meals to millions more children so no child is left behind.
On Monday I asked
@NorfolkCC
to back the campaign. To their shame, the ruling Tories refused.
Conservatives at county vote against my motion to introduce a carbon budgeting tool at the same time as they say the council has "done a lot" on climate change. How do they know? Or do they not want to admit that the Wensum Link would smash all carbon budgets?
#ClimateCrisis
π¦ Last night we went to the woods near Ringland, one of the best sites in the country for the extremely rare barbastelle, a bat which remains mysterious, even, or especially, in the eyes of experts like
@WildWingsEcol
. The Wensum Link would kill them.
#StoptheWensumLink
Norfolk had some of the worst fuel poverty in the country even before price hikes. I asked the Leader of Norfolk County Council whether he will establish an insulation taskforce to insulate thousands ofπ s to help bring down the cost of living.
He didn't answer the question.
It was
@carla_denyer
's inspirational climate emergency declaration that made me decide to stand to be a councillor.
@AdrianRamsay
is basically a living legend, having led some of the Greens' best election successes. Together, they will be phenomenal leaders for the Green Party.
πJust as the welfare state was built out of post-war ruins, now is the time to start to build a more positive future for everyone.
So encouraging to see
#UniversalBasicIncome
getting right up the agenda reality, thanks to work by
@UBILabNorfolk
.
π»
@carla_denyer
and
@AdrianRamsay
will provide the clear-sighted and strategic leadership the Green Party needs. They'll get the public on board with the Green message, and enable us to get Greens into power. Here's why I am backing them to be the next Green Party leadersπ±
1000s here at New Scotland Yard to protest at the Met's treatment of disabled
#ExtinctionRebellion
protestors.
@metpoliceuk
impounded wheelchairs and disabled toilets, for God's sake.
I was on
@SkyNews
to talk about appalling rise in families forced to live in temporary hostels for months on end.
Both Tories and Labour have utterly failed to build enough council houses or bring private rents under control, contributing to the housing crisis.
@TheGreenParty
Just attended
@NorfolkCC
Cabinet meeting to ask what they are doing about the awful air pollution in Norwich city centre: very, very strange. The Tory councillors basically said "we're doing fine, not a problem".
What is their alternative reality?
Rents: out of control in Norwich.
I speak to so many people who can only just make rent, with barely anything left over for childcare, food, and everything else.
@TheGreenParty
is committed to rent caps, to stop housing costs spiralling, and provide a secure home for all.
Great to talk today to
@jeremycorbyn
what we really need in Norfolk: i.e. public transport πππ Not the unnecessary and massively costly destruction of the Wensum Link. Good to have so many more people joining the campaign
@StopWensumLink
!
Very good to have
@jeremycorbyn
take time out of his schedule to visit the site where the NorwichWesternLink will rip through ancient trees. Joined also by
@jajo_osborn
&
@WoodsRingland
. We were able to discuss the complex wildlife impacts and the spiralling costs of the project
β Free higher education for all (scrap tuition fees)
β Affordable student housing (bring in rent caps)
β Restore grants for students so higher education is accessible to all
@TheGreenParty
's pledges for students going down very well at the UEA this afternoon!
Last year it was just 77 votes difference between Labour and Green in Mancroft ward in the city centre. Everyπͺknocked could be the one to win it for Greens this year, and win it big! Please join us!
On 13 April, we're in
#Norwich
to support two brilliant Young Green candidates -
@jajo_osborn
and Nannette Youssef! They've got all-out elections this year, so literally every extra pair of hands could make the difference! Join us >>
Thank you for the support. After 7 hours of being glued on to the road and another rebel (β€), then arrested and dearrested. The support (and the kangaroos!) were invaluable. ππͺ
#ExtintionRebellion
For years, Norfolk's Tories claimed the Norwich Western Link will cut carbon emissions, ignoring scrutiny from experts.
Now they have been forced to admit that it will add thousands of tonnes of CO2 into the environment each year. And at a cost of Β£70m per mile!
@StopWensumLink
Greens came second in University Ward last year. This year even more people say they will be voting for the positive action that
@NorwichGreens
can offer on
π³ Climate
π Affordable housing
π³οΈ Community engagement.
Students and long-term residents alike are voting for Sean!
π§ββοΈ A colleague (
@GalvinLucy
) just told me that "Going up against Norfolk County Council is like going into Mordor. You're the hobbits seeking to destroy the ring [road]" π
@StopWensumLink
πΊ What is behind the Green Party's rise in the polls?
β Yesterday
@Carla_Denyer
caught up with
@OwenJones84
about the climate crisis, how we support unions and how we go further than other parties on social justice.
This ridiculous project should never even have been started. It's too late for the nearly Β£3million already wasted on it, but never too late to scrap it and make a start on the decent public transport system we need instead.
Norfolk Tory councillors refuse to publish any evidence to back up their claim that Wensum Link road will reduce emissions. π€ Anyone else think that there is no evidence???
#StopTheWensumLink
The Norwich Western Link is quite possibly illegal. Leaving aside all the other reasons to stop it in its tracks, if
@NorfolkCC
pushes ahead they will be opening themselves up to major legal and financial risks.
@StopWensumLink
This was bizarre.
@NorwichLabour
this evening voted to indefinitely postpone a cross-party Lib Dem & Green motion for more car-free streets. They say this was so they could think about it. Aren't we in a climate and health emergency?
Great to be at the launch of
@AdrianRamsay
and
@carla_denyer
's bid for Green Party leadership today in Norwich. Carla and Adrian have such an impressive track record of campaigning and building a strong Green movement - really looking forward to their campaign! π
βNorfolk is faced with a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change direction. Letβs make sure it is not lostβ β
@stephenfry
π
@StopWensumLink
Really pleased to see
@NorwichLabour
councillors finally reject the Norwich Western Link! π
Now
@NorwichCC
has to oppose the planning application and write to the Government to make clear that road-building won't help Norfolk.
@StopWensumLink
Rents are rising faster in Norwich than almost anywhere, with tenants paying extortionate rents to fund someone else's mortgage while fearing being turfed out on a Section21.
As
@TheGreenParty
candidate I am standing for rent controls to stop costs spiralling, and a ban on S21.
