So saddened to learn today that
#neurosurgery
lost (1 week ago) one of its pioneers in
#skullbase
&
#cerebrovascular
surgery,
#TakanoriFukushima
. He was the consummate innovative naturally skilled neurosurgical artist who exuded passion, perfected his craft & inspired legions😥
I hope all
#neurosurgeons
and
#physicians
will identify with the reflections and thoughts I published here about: Neurosurgical Complications: Forgive and Remember : Neurosurgery
If you are interested in reading what made an immigrant neurosurgeon like me fall in love with the US, and my thoughts on

and the social turmoil that is tearing the US apart, here is my essay published in JNS today. Peace
What a sad day! Juha
#Hernesniemi
has passed on. You were a man of few words but every word counted& meant something profound; just like your surgical moves, lightning fast yet clean and supremely in control, inimitable, unique. You were a mentor & a friend. You were authentic.😪
So in my first 3 tweets, I summed up what I feel are the quintessential traits I admire in the world's best
#neurosurgeons
: relentless passion for what they do, incredible
#resilience
in the face of adversity, and a love of teaching and
#education
. Let's explore all that!
These are not mugshots! These are all the upcoming speakers of our monthly-every 3rd Thursday, 5pm-7pm EDT - Univ of Miami

I am not sure how much more my poor country can take in this cursed year of 2020: Political corruption, economic collapse, COVID healthcare crisis, and now this. Unbelievable.

Delighted to be invited to the Spetzler Microsurgery Course as keynote faculty. Having a great time with
@mtlawton
@BarrowNeuro
. Rekindled old memories from fellowship days in the 90s.
Today a giant, Evandro, has fallen, yet risen to a much better place. His legacy is not forgotten; it is thriving in the hands of his disciples. His impact is enormous. Nobody has merged Neuroanatomy,Microsurgical Skills,Surgical Esthetics like he has. Evandro, teach the angels!
Saddened by the passing away of Prof Evandro de Oliveira. Glad to have had a chance to meet him at the “The Evandro de Oliveira Symposium” in 2019. And beautiful dedication by Prof

is correct-Tubercle of Princeteau is the eponym for trigeminal eminence. Dissecting V3 off this tubercle reveals the trigeminal depression&exposes the true petrous apex as opposed to the false petrous apex (Kawase’s rhomboid)

one of my closest friends is simply the best neurosurgeon Netflix could have chosen to portray the raw unfiltered authenticity of our daily lives being who we are and doing what we do. Mastery, sensibility, honesty, advocacy, humility...stuff of legends. Kudosmyman

Course of ophthalmic influenced by ophthalmic ring. Ring breaks&determines vessel course. In 83%, lower ring regresses, ophthalmic crosses OVER optic nerve (“bayonet” appearance). In 17%, upper ring regresses, ophthalmic crosses UNDER nerve (straighter course) which is seen here

I may be speechless in expressing how humbled yet proud I feel to be in this position, but I am not short on words in describing the addition of
@KatieOrrico
as CEO of
@AANSNeuro
;among them are: blessed, lucky, instrumental, culturally transformative… we are all here to serve.
Fred Gentili, my dear friend, one of my favorite people. I pray for his health and that the legions of trainees that he has mentored imbibed his humanity, authenticity, honesty, humility, all weaved within a fabric of surgical mastery and surgical grit.

(1/19) I guess w so much interest in this case,I’d better complete the story(see 19/19 below)!But first let me reply to the multiple comments in 18 parts!I am astounded that several felt compelled to launch a preemptive attack b/c a microsurgeon dared post a basilar tip aneurysm!
#MorcosChallenge
Pt was treated w/stent coiling at outside hospital using an enterprise stent extending from the basilar to the left PCA. Good initial result but angio 3 months later again showed recurrence. What is your next move now?

Great article and an important topic. International Medical Graduates are an essential source of talent for neurosurgery residencies and academic faculty. This article and other analyses show how successful they can become.

We used bilateral telovelar through median sulcus (intraop mapping of facial colliculi, deviated laterally by hematoma). Had transient HB2 that resolved completely. Back to playing tennis & top of his class. Credit of excellent recovery due to his youth.

Retrosig offers more exposure of ventral brainstem/clivus than Kawase.Adding RISA doesn’t increase exposure of ventral brainstem/clivus.Kawase allows more surgical freedom at porus than retrosig but adding RISA increases surgical freedom&access to mfossa

Used far lateral approach thru MCP eventhough traverses through more brain (compared to geometrically shorter telovelar approach) b/c allows caudo-cranial trajectory along long axis of lesion&avoids going thru 4th ventricle floor (pt house brackman 3/6)
