If you are at a conference listening to a talk, do not underestimate the power of a smile. Most speakers are actually very nervous giving a talk, and to see an encouraging smile in the audience gives them a boost and confidence you wouldn’t believe.

@_mrpussy In a lot of cases (eg Pacific whiting) the fish meat doesn’t preserve well after it’s caught unless you process it this way. So this is the only way to use a huge and sustainable fishery to get cheap protein on people’s plates!

Over the weekend ~15 California condors descended on my moms house and absolutely trashed her deck. They still haven’t left. It sucks but also this is unheard of, there’s only 160 of these birds flying free in the state and a flock of them decided to start a war with my mom 😭

@ChadRomoser OK but a) the funding/feasibility issues are exactly the problem, and b) not everyone is on the academic job track. Certainly publishing early and often is essential if one wants a faculty job, but I'm sure there are successful candidates who didn't publish until post-PhD.
