Luke Raley attempting a bunt in this spot with 2 outs would be ludicrously bold even if the pitch was 92 MPH and down the middle
but to do it on 99 MPH up and in? that takes a special level of ambition and confidence that deserves even further admiration

Luis Castillo last 10 starts:
61.2 IP, 3.36 ERA, 50 H, 17 BB, 66 K, .694 OPS allowed
Mariners record in those starts: 3-7
Luke Weaver last 10 starts:
42 IP, 8.79 ERA, 65 H, 17 BB, 28 K, 1.032 OPS allowed
Reds record in those starts: 9-1
there was real skepticism surrounding Shohei Ohtani's bat during his first Spring Training six years ago
now he's blowing the minds of his teammates in winter workouts and on the backfields with regularity -- even as strictly a DH

:
I, for one, am looking forward to watching some actual baseball tonight instead of watching actual people getting stupendously, laughably butthurt over my good friend Jake Mintz doing his job
there’s no Mariners game to tweet about so I guess I’ll just use today to share some personal news 👀
@bcubed33
and I have been together for almost 9 years so this is no huge surprise to anyone that knows us but uh, hot take: it’s still pretty cool to actually finally do it 😅💍
stunning development: player who has hit more home runs than literally any other player over a very large sample of time hits another home run
the Mariners seem to have really uncovered this anonymous nobody with more home runs than all the other players
complaining about the strike zone is easily one of my least favorite things about baseball Twitter
it is exhausting & uninteresting
HOWEVER
I have never seen anything like what has happened to Julio over these first few weeks
it is absolutely surreal and infuriating to watch
sure the Mariners lost the series to the Orioles but all I saw was the Friday blowout and then the Felix Hall of Fame induction and then nothing else after that because I was busy getting married so I’d say it was still a pretty solid weekend
not sure if this will make Mariners fans feel better or worse but it caught my attention to see Lance go out of his way to bring the M's up
from Passan on the Astros pursuing a perfect postseason:
at this point it's obvious the Mariners will clinch a postseason spot in a game that features a run-saving catch in LF from Jesse Winker, 8 scoreless IP from Marco Gonzales, an immaculate 9th inning by Diego Castillo (all caught by Curt Casali) and a walk-off HR by Abraham Toro
Julio becoming even a moderately competent defensive center fielder would have had a monumental impact on the structure of the Mariners roster for years to come but him becoming THIS good is just so ridiculous we should never take it for granted in the slightest
reminder that unanimous 2020 AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis will play baseball tomorrow for the first place Mariners against the defending World Series champion Dodgers (who the Mariners just beat, not sure if you guys saw that but they did, they won 4-3)
okay bye ✌️😴
sorry fellow Mariners fans, there are plenty of reasons to be angry at the Angels but Raisel Iglesias launching a bunch of sunflower seeds onto the field is not one of them. this is objectively hilarious. and whoever is responsible for this slo-mo shot deserves a thousand raises
Cal Raleigh becoming not just reasonably productive but legitimately good from the right side is a SIGNIFICANT development
he had 7 HR vs. LHP in 242 PA before this season
he's already up to 5 HR vs. LHP in 31 PA this year
we’ve grown so accustomed to trades that require substantial analysis/grappling (for better or worse) that it is almost laughable how refreshing it is to see the Mariners opt for the “give good player money” strategy that elicits an uncomplicated “cool, they got better” response
BREAKING: Catcher Mitch Garver and the Seattle Mariners are in agreement on a two-year, $24 million contract, pending physical, sources tell ESPN.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to him, Mariners fans who get to celebrate an unexpected gift and everyone else.
Trade news, per ESPN sources:
Arizona Diamondbacks acquire third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
Seattle Mariners acquire reliever Carlos Vargas and catcher Seby Zavala.
Diamondbacks get their third baseman. Mariners move money off the books and get a live arm and backup catcher.
In addition to Kris Bryant, the Seattle Mariners are expressing interest in free-agent infielder Trevor Story, according to sources familiar with the situation. Seattle has already added Robbie Ray and Adam Frazier, but continue to seek an impact bat.
can we just ignore the Mariners mess for a second and appreciate that Harry Ford just played 118 Minor League games (including 78 at catcher!!!) and a week later hopped on a plane to the Czech Republic to help Great Britain try to win a European Baseball Championship? what a stud
by the way Winker and Suárez are not only good baseball players but also TREMENDOUS people and personalities, just some A+++ additions from a vibes perspective
no clue whose kid this is but imagine how much of a flex this photo is gonna be when they grow up
"here's me as a toddler getting down at 3x Cy Young Award winner Logan Gilbert's wedding with 7x All-Star Big Dumper and 12x AL MVP Julio Rodriguez"
5 years ago I was prepping to wake up at 5 AM to say goodbye to Ichiro and watch a positively hilarious collection of Mariners dominate a loaded Oakland A’s team that went on to win 97 games
things are a bit different now
Austin Adams is now at 20 HBP in 45.2 IP, 1 shy of the all-time single-season record
reminder that Adams was traded to San Diego last year in the same deal that sent Ty France to Seattle; France just set the Mariners single-season franchise record for HBPs (as a hitter) with 21
just the 2nd time all season the Braves only scored 1 run and by far new season-low for times reaching base (4; previous low was 7)
you pitch like that against Atlanta, you should win
they almost didn't
but they did
the only thing funnier than the Mariners somehow winning that game would be them somehow winning the game that starts in less than 20 hours in a ballpark 2,400 miles away from where they are right now
it can obviously be a bumpy ride sometimes but it’s also not that complicated: Matt Brash has some of the nastiest stuff on the planet and we should all feel very fortunate he is on the Seattle Mariners
JP Crawford ranks among all shortstops:
2.6 fWAR (10th)
3.8 bWAR (5th)
126 OPS+ (4th)
131 wRC+ (4th)
.382 OBP (2nd)
68 BB (1st)
26 doubles (2nd)
63 runs scored (2nd)
Julio will always be the superstar but the 2023 Mariners would be in a rough place without this breakout from JP
WHAT WE LEARNED, WEEK 18
@MLBONFOX
- McClanahan injury fallout for TBR
- Pablo Lopez has quietly leveled up
- Julio the star but JP deserves more love for SEA
- Austin Riley reminds us how good he is
- Jeimer a Cub once again
- Amed Rosario's fit in LA
if your reaction to the Castillo haul is “that’s a ton to give up”:
1. yes
2. it had to be; he was the best pitcher on the market and like 10 teams wanted him
3. if they don’t give up a ton, the Mariners are the Rangers in this tweet. and think about how crappy that’d feel
haven’t had the chance to tweet about the first-place Seattle Mariners before so here we go:
wow. these first-place Seattle Mariners sure are in first place. how about that?
saving my Ty France anger for if he’s somehow not named the replacement for Álvarez even though it is obvs ridiculous he did not make it in the first place
but as a wise third baseman once said: Good Vibes Only
mopped the Jays, W8, and Julio is an All-Star
that’s a good day
highest OPS vs. LHPs, last three seasons (min. 250 plate appearances):
5. Aaron Judge: .993
4. Tim Anderson: .998
3. Trea Turner: 1.038
2. Teoscar Hernández (he's on the Mariners now): 1.053
1. Paul Goldschmidt: 1.174 (lol this is ridiculous)
our favorite local pizza spot recently re-opened after being closed for months for repairs because a semi had veered off the road and plowed into the building (no one was hurt)
went back last night and well, you gotta respect the sign
don’t have many birthdays memorized but I’ll always know today is important because whenever Neftalí Feliz (another May 2 birthday) enters a LIDOM game I can count on an excited text from
@SlangsOnSports
beyond fortunate to call Sarah a friend, baseball is better because of her!
