Neutrons are typically better for mixed metal oxides I work(ed) on because they interact as strongly with O atoms as with many metals, whereas the scattering power of O for X-rays is weaker (so you don’t “see” them as well).

@andrewmccalip What’s absolutely clear in the papers is that their #LK99 product was a mixture. Furthermore, there’s no solid (data analysis based) evidence of Cu incorporation into the apatite structure (how much/where) or volume shrinkage which allegedly gives rise to superconductivity. 1/2

@andrewmccalip Forget “might”, it’s a must… Given what you set out to do, and that #LK99 patterns in arxiv articles indicate multi-phase samples, you should be X-raying and properly analysing XRD patterns of every reagent and intermediate, as well as your final product.

Sadly not at #SSCG2019 - working at @ILLGrenoble instead, but have heard rumours that Warda Rahim gave an excellent talk on pyrochlore-type Bi2Sn2O7. 👏 I should add that my work on Bi2Sn2O7 was inspired by Art Sleight (see tws below) who first reported its polymorphism in 1980.
