I'm being harangued by the

Squad for my earlier comments. I can take it, but I'd like to say that as a journalist,
@ayeshahazarika
, you rely on race as a starting point far too often. It speaks to a poverty of ability. Lucky for you that you have such a powerful platform.

just means more practicing addicts on the streets. Drugs have been decriminalized in Portugal--a country the libs like to point to as a compassionate role model--but they have a lot of rehabs and no safe injection sites. Bennett needs to retire.
I've seen children abandoned by drug and/or alcohol addicted parents, and these "progressive" social workers are yanking two of them out of a foster home bc the Christian parents wouldn't lie about the Easter bunny. They should be fired.
@NightShiftMD
@globeandmail
It's inflammatory, but speaks to the disgust Cdns feel seeing zombie addicts on the streets. Disgust matters when it comes to public policy, something PP has worked out. Shaming people into accepting addicts causes resentment. Cdns are afraid of these drugs for a good reason.
@ayeshahazarika
IMO, it's progress that skin colour matters less than "character." H&M crassly monetize their royal connections, eg.

Respectfully disagree. I've spend time in and around the recovery industry. Safe supply does not work well with these new classes of Uber-powerful drugs. Alberta, with its emphasis on recovery (designed by a former street addict) is much better. Besides, would you volunteer to

He didn't win a suit. He strong-armed a senior into making a 1000 pound contribution to a charity.
Andy Plumb is a former drug user, so he probably had strong feelings about the young person in the centre of this scandal--you know, the person we should REALLY be concerned about.

I'm the child of immigrants too + my parents owned a small farm while my father worked as a janitor. I went to the highest ranking uni in Canada--U of Toronto. You've got a lot of deep seated hostility that you're discharging everywhere. Get help + get some humility.

The left ignores class. An activist made headlines when she dismissed the deaths of 16 small-town hockey players (bus accident), saying she'd care more if they'd been minority Canadians. Went on TV to explain, made it worse. Working class ppl & country ppl = off their radar.
The problem with
#BelieveSurvivors
is empathy exhaustion. Too much controversy around too many claims = I don't really care anymore. The militancy & politicizing of accusations is desensitizing. When I hear about it now I ask "Is it an ex-partner or a political target?"

You're out to score notoriety points, but you're selling your soul to do it. Hope it's worth it and that the careers of law students at Osgoode aren't affected.

We're teaching young women the wrong coping skills. And not all women are cut out for the Tinder experience, a fact the Aziz story makes clear.I stopped lying to myself about my capacity for casual sex in my 20s. One of the best decisions I ever made. An underused option, IMO.

Can you define "far right" please? And would you be equally happy to say the "far left" is screwing up the economy and the stability of longstanding institutions?

Good grief. My Yugoslav father disagreed with communism in the 1950s. He had to cross the border into Austria in the middle of the night because some of his former 'comrades' were coming to purge him. We need to get realistic about the level of threat here. Scare quotes indeed!
@JesseBrown
It really is awful. I'm horrified by it and am struggling to understand how we got here, how unaware (the mostly young) protesters are. My dad fought the Nazis in Yugoslavia during WW2. I've visited Dachau. I was raised Christian. A lot of us are on your side.

"...where does prohibiting a five-minute act of private spiritual devotion fit in?"
It wouldn't stop there. It would happen more often than that and then would expand to include other things. Religion has no place in a classroom, not unless it is an explicit religion class.

They're saying that "her journalism" and her being a "young Asian woman" are what netted her online harassment. It's easy to attract haters online no matter who you are. She's posted hateful stuff. That can't be the cause? Really?
@CathyYoung63
Southern totally lost me when she showed up in the Mediterranean using a bullhorn to shout at migrants on a crowded boat. Fact: there are some horrendous optics that simply can't be unseen. Whatever one might think of migrants, shouting at a boatful is crass, stupid and inhumane.

That there wasn't adequate proof because the accuser (not survivor) waited 36 years before saying anything. That we rely on reason to determine conclusions in criminal matters, not onslaughts of emotion. That even ppl who behave poorly as teens deserve second chances.

I've been aware for several years now that the Guardian was losing the plot, but holy sh*tcakes, Batman, this is some serious, other-planet hyperbole. I've written for

Matthew, why don't you drop the hyperbole and submit an article arguing against a position you found there? I'm serious. It's a venue for discussion, not a place where shit-posters go.

That may be, but it's not so important that it deserves its own academic departments. The fact is that it's a thin-on-the-ground area of study that would actually be more useful if it were integrated into other departments. On its own, it's distorting, self-generated fluff.

These days, there's a pernicious belief that criticism is toxic. I was a very sensitive young person, but even I saw that if I didn't change my attitude, I wouldn't get anywhere. So I made a conscious effort, telling myself, "maybe they're right." I learned to evaluate criticism.

It's unwise to lump everyone in the left together, but heightened hysteria is causing a lot of over-simplification and one leftist pretty much sounds like another these days. I used to be left, but the fossilization of ideas and pathological over-emphasis on victimization? Nuts.

Do the people making these claims have any idea of how dumb they sound? The idea of what is actually "dangerous" needs a reset. Dangerous is a drunk driver. Dangerous is trying to play with a polar bear. Dangerous is not--let me repeat--NOT IGNORING A PUBLICATION YOU DISLIKE.

When referencing problems in the Middle East, Hillary Clinton cited excess men as a major source of the conflicts. JBP approaches that same issue from another angle and all hell breaks loose. He's not advocating anything--he's using colourful rhetoric to state a well-known fact.
@mjaeckel
In grad school, where I was criticized a lot, I came up with a formula. 50% of the criticism was probably fair (or fair-ish); 50% was probably not. I listened & kept an open mind. It took a while--and yes, some tears too--but eventually I realized most ppl were not out to get me.

A lot of 'disciplines' have disappeared. Alchemy, phrenology, physiognomy. In Canada, scientists are trying to stop the accreditation of homeopathic 'doctors.' Women's Studies is too antagonistic to other fields (that would add value and richness). On its own, it's parochial.
@andrewaperez
The harmful nature of easily accessible porn is becoming more apparent. Talk to young women who are now trying to have "normal" sex with young men who have been conditioned by porn. You're not trying hard enough to understand the problems PP is addressing.

What advocates are missing is this: people will have more latitude to demand that

leave an area because the addicts won't have a place like a safe injection site at which to hang around. Working + middle class Torontonians deserve safe spaces too.
