The reference to someone surviving cancer as ‘strong’ has never sat well with me. My Father died of cancer. That doesn’t mean he didn’t put every inch of his strength into fighting the illness. Whether or not someone survives or dies, they are equally just as strong.

After years of deferral due to illness and other reasons, my medical team supported me to be in a position to be able to complete Civil Litigation today. I’m now very unwell with Covid and medical advice is to defer. Feeling incredibly frustrated but trying to trust the process.

My parents were told at my birth that I would never be able to walk, let alone play any sport. Fast forward several months, I went through an operation on both feet by my Consultant Mr Magnus McLaren at @QAHospitalNews . I owe every single step I take to him.

My Father refused to accept it without a try and instead signed me up to TaeKwonDo at the age of four. At six years, I became the youngest black belt in Hampshire. TaeKwonDo is what I remember most about my Dad who sadly passed when I was eight years old 👇🏻

I remember one piece of advice Keir gave me and that was, “actions not words.” To hear him say that in his first speech as Prime Minister made me have a massive lump in my throat and took me back to the very first meeting in which he has never closed the door. @Keir_Starmer

I will not sit here and say living with club foot is easy because it is not. The daily pain you experience, the constant wish that there could be some magic fix to get rid of all the complications and the fact you can never wear those shoes you really like does get debilitating.

I then started playing football both leisurely and at club level. Over recent years, I have had involvement with women’s football clubs high in the women’s pyramid. Unfortunately, due to other illnesses and last years temporary paralysis, that has come to a halt... for now.

@BarbaraRich_law @LottieJohn1 I was hospitalised at the end of July (unrelated matter), however during the heatwave I was treated for dehydration via IV drip for not drinking fluids for 2 hours whilst in hospital, yet the BSB expected fellow bar students to not drink fluids for 3+ hours.

I’ll never forget the time when I volunteered at a hospital and thought the doctors were constantly laughing at the patients by writing ‘LOL’ on their patient file when in fact it’s an acronym for ‘lymph obligatory load’.

The way NHS staff are being treated, yet expected to work on the front line in cases of life and death is beyond unimaginable. They have no idea when and if any further PPE equipment will be ordered, let alone arrive. What are you going to do about it @BorisJohnson @PHE_uk ?

You’ll cry on occasions due to the stress, knowing they are having to go to bed with boots with a metal bar every night through growth, with casts from ankle to knee and you’ll wish you could take their pain away. I have another operation in the near future.

A few months later, I was contacted and Keir asked me to assist him on a project and help prepare legal documents which I did. A few years later, Keir reached out to see how I was getting on and how I was. He still had an open door for any questions and advice.

I’ve had to defer the BPTC for seven years now and each year it becomes more and more difficult. It was only at the end of last year when I started to reach out for help. I didn’t and still do not even know how to talk about my personal situation.

I was a nobody to him. I wasn’t living in his constituency so he had no obligation to meet with me. I had no idea why he wanted to meet with me. He had sensed I needed his guidance and advice. Keir opened up an opportunity to talk to him. I still remember his advice today.

At the time, I had to defer the Bar Professional Training Course (as it then was) due to extenuating circumstances and I felt like a failure. I felt utterly mortified. He was the first barrister, first individual in the legal profession who I told.

@Rachel_Luby Significantly higher levels of training are needed for those undertaking mental health assessments. Half of the problem is that the individual having the assessment don’t feel able to speak to those they are in front of due to the manner in which the assessment is taken.

2. Staff are being tested with the FFP3 Face Masks, however there is a high failure rate. @PHE_uk have advised to stop test fitting staff and staff are to just wear the masks and to ‘work it out between themselves’ whether the mask fits their face or not.

He sat and listened and just allowed me to ask him all the questions I needed to. I told him how I’d never be able to gain work experience and how embarrassed I was to even tell any barrister the situation I was in.

Keir pulled out his notebook and by the end of the meeting, we had a plan. I had actions and tasks to do, but we had a plan. Each step had diversions and you could say I’m on one of his diversions now having to still defer the course due to illness and other circumstances.

Adam is exactly the barrister who I inspire to be like. He is the most determined, courageous and selfless people I have genuinely come across. He’s taken the time to message me when he knows I’ve been in hospital - when he is battling his own problems too.
