Too early to tell for sure, but Hamas appears to be having more success than in the past in overwhelming Iron Dome with bigger barrages. If true, will lead to more Israeli casualties, which will also mean a harsher Israeli response. A recipe for significant escalation.

What is happening in Jerusalem is similar to the Trump effect. Bibi has facilitated getting extremists into the Knesset. He winks & nods at them & is dependent on them for his political survival. They are in turn emboldened & this violence is the result.

1. As talks begin in Vienna, the Biden Admin is committed to ultimately getting to a “longer and stronger” deal with Iran. Here’s why the only realistic way to get there is first by mutual return to the JCPOA & why arguments about leveraging Trump’s sanctions don’t make sense.

1. So the mantra of the day seems to be to improve the situation in Gaza without directly helping Hamas. But how to do that? There is one immediate short-term idea that is better than all the others. Give Gazans permits to work in Israel.

We are on the verge of a dangerous situation in Jerusalem in the coming days that requires a serious response from the Israeli government. Describing that situation as a “private real-estate dispute” is not a serious response.
