2. First, for any tough negotiation to work you do need leverage. But you also need some level of confidence on both sides (trust is too strong a word) that an agreement will be implemented. Otherwise there is no negotiation at all.

This is an important positive step but it’s not going to be easy to get back into the JCPOA. It’s going to take time and tough negotiations and it would be better if the US & Iran can talk directly. But still. Important progress.

Well, let's understand how we got here. On October 7th, Hamas, a terrorist organization, slaughtered 1200 Israelis, many of them young people who were simply attending a concert. Women were horribly raped. And so absolutely I said, then, I say, now Israel has a right to defend.

6. But reconstruction is not enough. Gaza’s economy is strangled because it cannot connect with the outside world. This is capitalism 101. If you can’t move capital or labor, your economy is severely constrained.

4. Eventually when the sides are ready for a ceasefire it is facilitated primarily by the Egyptians and also UNSCO, who are the two parties with the most regular and direct ties with both sides.

3. The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East (UNSCO) also has a vital role as a player who talks to both sides and has probably the deepest expertise of any international player on the ground in Gaza.

5. The US has leverage with the Israelis that neither of them have. It also has international influence that neither of them have. So it can credibly tell all the other would be mediators (and there are many...) to knock it off, stay out, and don’t make things more complicated

5. This is an effective way to try to get meaningful reform while also being humane and not cutting off funds to programs for things like schools and public health in a place like Gaza that has been under severe stress.

2. It’s a good way to get cash into the hands of Palestinians in Gaza who have been completely vetted by Israeli security. Far from a solution to Gaza's problems but a good step.

8. Who controls all that cash? Hamas. It’s basically a combination economic stimulus package/payoff. It had kept Hamas satisfied enough to keep the peace until a couple weeks ago while also helping the strip’s economy.

9. Will the West Bank remain calm? What will happen in Jerusalem? What about protests in Arab communities inside Israel? These are unknowns that might make this particular conflict different with different long-term implications. Only time will tell

3. As I understand it, in the months ahead the State Department and UNRWA will be negotiating an understanding of the terms of their relationship going forward. This understanding will be publicly available.

8. As for the Iranians. After the last 4 years, they are quite aware that any deal is fragile and temporary. If they go back in, it’s because they want the sanctions relief now for as long as they can get it and are willing to trade it for restrictions on the nuclear program.

15. When you’ve had attacks coming out of people in the West Bank, they are almost all people who snuck across unfinished pieces of the security barrier. Not the west bankers with work permits of which last I checked there were ~75,000.

3. First, a bunch of the reconstruction funds will go to rebuilding infrastructure and focusing on improving electricity, water, and health which are some of the biggest problems in Gaza.

13. As for making progress on the region and missiles. That negotiation won’t be about sanctions relief. It will be a negotiation that needs to involve key regional players and focus on steps all sides can take on all sides to de-escalate tensions.
