Ukrainian officials claiming they have hit the Russian Naval cruiser, Moskva. The warship in the Black Sea was famously told to go f—k itself by the Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island.
At a vineyard in Georgia today, the winemaker asked me where I’m from. “I live in Ukraine these days,” I said. “Oh there was good news in Kherson today!” he responded. And then he gifted me a bottle of peach brandy to “open after the victory.” 🇬🇪❤️🇺🇦
Holtby on declining White House visit invite: "My family and myself, we believe in a world where humans are treated with respect regardless of your stature, what you’re born into. ... You’re asked to choose what side you’re on, and I think it’s pretty clear what side I’m on."
I have some (personal) news: I’m moving to Moscow to be a foreign correspondent for The Washington Post! It’s my dream job.
Covering this World Series is my last assignment in Sports, which I haven’t totally wrapped my mind around yet.
This is pretty significant: New York Rangers superstar forward Artemi Panarin showing support for jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny ahead of planned Saturday protests all over Russia. Hashtags this Instagram post “Freedom for Navalny”
Yesterday: Russia and Ukraine sign an agreement to guarantee blockaded commercial ships with grain exports safe passage from the Black Sea port in Odessa.
Today: reports of missile strikes on the Black Sea port in Odessa.
Spent a day in Kharkiv’s Saltivka neighborhood — one of the most hard-hit areas of the country — where 50 people are living together in a basement. These are Russian-speakers who liked Russia just fine before the war. Now they hate their neighbor.
Today in Ukraine.
Sens. Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal presented Zelensky with a resolution they authored to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. That would put Moscow in company with Syria, Iran, Cuba and North Korea.
Spent a couple days with Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade near occupied Izyum. The shelling is “10 times less” intense, a battalion commander said, since a recent HIMARS strike on a Russian ammo depot in Izyum. Why can’t Ukraine get more HIMARS faster?
Happy that

Greetings from Odesa, the city where both of my parents and their parents were born. I’ve been wanting to visit here for years. I wish my first time in this beautiful place wasn’t under these circumstances.
Talked to Kharkiv’s mayor this morning. He said Ukrainian authorities still control the city, but it’s being surrounded by Russian forces. He said food and medical supplies can’t get to people in need because of the nonstop shelling.
People hid weapons. They reported the movements and locations of Russians troops. And many had handlers from Ukrainian security services. Our story on the resistance movement in Kherson, a subtle, sustained insurgency that helped force the Russian retreat:
Brett Connolly said he stands by his decision not to go to the White House. Said he’s supporting a good friend who he agreed with (Devante Smith-Pelly).
I think it’s so cool that the Caps shared their celebration with everyone rather than do something private. They literally carried the Cup through the streets. They know the fan base has waited just as long as they have.
Getting my nails done at a salon in Odessa today, which feels so delightfully normal that I’m giddy. After a month with no major attack here, a lot of businesses in the city are reopening. The zoo will be open tomorrow.
On the road now, but my heart is breaking for Kharkiv, where I woke up this morning and where whole neighborhoods were leveled this afternoon by heavy shelling. Reports of many casualties.
This was a vibrant city just a few days ago (w/

Huge, huge prisoner exchange. 215 Ukrainians, including more than 100 Azov fighters, in exchange for 55 Russians and Viktor Medvedchuk, according to Yermak on Telegram. Wow.
In October 2021, the U.S. obtained “extraordinary detail” about the Kremlin’s secret plans for a war in Ukraine.
President Biden pressed his advisers. Did they really think that this time Putin would strike? Yes, they said.
Read our monster project:
Barry Trotz has been staying hydrated (if you know what I'm saying), so contract talks are still TBD. "I’m not in any state to talk. I always talked about having really good clarity and calm and all that. I don’t have a lot of clarity right now. That’s self-inflicted."
CBJ players did Kuznetsov’s bird celly after Panarin scored the winner.
Kuznetsov: “That’s fine. It’s nice to get some people that think about me. Same as like in April last year, you know?”
This is out there now, but Ovechkin and his wife are expecting their first child. She was on the ice tonight with her sister and father. Fans were congratulating her and Alex on the pregnancy.
Putin said today that Navalny “deliberately ignored” the requirements of his parole by going abroad for medical treatment.
Navalny’s wife on Instagram: “I saved a photo for memory of how Alexei consciously ignored” the requirements. (He was airlifted to Berlin while in a coma.)
Dear god. This is right in the center of the city. I interviewed people at that blue and yellow tent on Saturday. I was inside that building because it was being used by volunteers.
Asked Hagelin about this yesterday.
Me: "The camera caught you playing the trumpet or something ..."
Hagelin: "It was the saxophone actually."
Me: "Yeah, my bad ..."
And to everyone commenting that this needs more verification, I totally agree with you! (Sources for now are Odessa Gov. Maksym Marchenko and Ukrainian presidential adviser Arestovych.)
An evening in Ukraine: enjoying dinner with colleagues in Dnipro when the air-raid siren goes off. Everyone in the restaurant ignores, because it’s always going off nowadays. And then after a few minutes, a big boom. And then Telegram alerts of explosions elsewhere and everywhere
I just want to put it out there that I asked Ovechkin the question that lead to the now epic, “We’re not going to be suck this year” line. So, you’re welcome, I guess? I like the version with an f-bomb better.
Today I visited my grandfather’s older sister, who helped raise me. I consider her a grandma. We haven’t seen each other in 24 years. And I’m so worried about her safety. We talked about where she’ll take shelter if/when the Russian attack comes. She said my flak jacket is cool.
So, Lars Eller, how often have you watched your Stanley Cup-winning goal?
Eller: "I don't have a number on it. But I'll keep watching it. If I'm in a bad mood, I'll put it on."
Today marks two months since I left Moscow for a reporting trip to Ukraine. The first month was spent around bright Ukrainians who were hopeful about the future. We ate at hip restaurants and ordered fancy coffee. They didn’t believe war was coming. I hoped they were right.
Draisaitl finishes with 50 goals. Ovechkin wins the Maurice “Rocket” Richard for the eighth time. He’s the first NHL player to ever lead the league in goals eight times.
Holtby said he felt like this is one of those things that forces guys into a decision, so it was important for him to stick to his values.
Asked if it was a hard decision, Holtby said he could never really see himself going.
Lars Eller on the Maple Leafs: "We were just playing against Crosby and Malkin, so everything kind of drops off from there. It's not that special, to be honest. It's a good team, like a lot of others. They'll probably be a playoff team, I would think."
Most meaningful part of this is that my other hockey-writing colleagues were the ones who voted. So touched by the recognition and grateful that I work at a place that gives the resources and support and sends me all over the world so I can write cool stuff.
Also, appreciate all of the messages from everyone. Not able to respond to everyone. We're staying safe and also trying to cover this story as best we can.
Kuznetsov said he feels pretty good but didn’t commit to being in. I asked him if this was his first concussion.
“I don’t have a lot of brain in my head so it’s not that big of a deal for me.”
Ovechkin: “I have pretty good chances, but today, it was not my day. You can't score every night."
He’s scored in six straight games, including tonight.
It's disturbing something like this happened to Devante Smith-Pelly. It's perhaps more disturbing that I've received tweets since last night wondering what's so bad about chanting "basketball" at a black NHLer. We all know the meaning/intent there.
The Crimea bridge was an expensive personal project of Putin’s. An attack on it is a direct hit to him and his annexation claims. Militarily, it’s a major supply route for Russian forces in the south, so if it’s out of commission, that’s a big deal.
I'm old enough to remember when Philipp Grubauer was Washington's starting goalie and the Capitals were in a two games to none hole against the Blue Jackets.
Just had the cutest little girl wearing a Kuznetsov jersey on the Amtrak ask me if Holtby is starting today. (Told her it’ll probably be Copley.) She’s making a sign to get a puck during warmups. I’m pulling for her.
Washington Post journalists today encountered a Ukrainian military unit that was hit w/ cluster munitions while retreating from Lysychansk. Eight men were wounded. Our security escort worked with the unit’s medic to stabilize the most serious cases. Story:
Not a ton of people know this about me, but I was actually raised by my grandparents. I moved in with them in S. Carolina when I was 12, and had it not been for them taking me in, I don’t know where I’d be today. This is their wedding photo, which is so old school and great.
Ukraine is running out of ammunition for its Soviet-era artillery. The shortage points to a years-long sabotage campaign by Russia that’s intensified in recent months. Story with

Ukrainian forces have had a breakthrough in Kherson region. But soldiers here say not to expect the same sort of Russian collapse as in Kharkiv. This retreat has been more organized. Our story from the southern front line (w/

Ovechkin was asked about Lars Eller’s importance to the Caps before the game. His answer was classic.
“He scored the game-winning goal in Game 5. What’s the question?”
On the night Alex Ovechkin reached a pinnacle both professionally and personally, I followed him around the ice to see what a dream realized looked like:
