Co-founder Games Workshop, Fighting Fantasy, HIRO Capital, BGI, Livingstone Academy. Ex-chair Eidos/Sumo. Dubbed 'Patient Zero for epidemic of UK geek culture'
Hard to believe that it is 40 years since Steve Jackson and I opened our first Games Workshop retail shop in April 1978 in a little side street in West London. The queue outside was inspiring!
I had the absolute honour to receive my Knighthood today from the Princess Royal at Windsor Castle. I am incredibly proud. It was a truly humbling and wonderful experience. And it is deserved recognition of the games industry and all the brilliant people who are part of it.
40 years ago today on 31st March 1983, following the huge success of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Steve Jackson and I published two new
@fightingfantasy
gamebooks, Citadel of Chaos and The Forest of Doom.
40 years ago today saw the first publication of City of Thieves with its iconic cover and internal illustrations by Iain McCaig. Happy Birthday Zanbar Bone!
Today marks the 40th anniversary of Deathtrap Dungeon. To celebrate I've written another sequel, The Dungeon on Blood Island, doing my best to lure people to their doom once again. Where's Throm when you need him? May your STAMINA never fail!
@fightingfantasy
@scholasticuk
Thank you. It is a incredible honour and I am very, very proud, but it is also fantastic recognition for the games industry and the amazing people in it.
This day, 27th August 1982, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain was published with an iconic cover by Peter Andrew Jones

1983: BBC South East at Six explored the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons, with the help of Games Workshop founders Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
I was devastated to hear that Russ Nicholson had passed away. I had the pleasure to work with Russ on The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and more. His iconic pen and ink illustrations were incredibly atmospheric and set the standard for Fighting Fantasy. He will be greatly missed.
Very sad news Bryan Ansell passed away. Bryan, Steve Jackson and I set up Citadel Miniatures in 1978 as part of Games Workshop. He was a craftsman and dynamic entrepreneur who drove the growth of GW to the next level. Without Bryan, Warhammer would not have launched. Photo 2021.
Entertainment New Years Honours. And fantastic to see Games Workshop co-founder,
@ian_livingstone
, knighted - his books & games not only expanded my imagination but knowledge and vocabulary.
I never understood why Puffin didn’t standardise the green on the spines of our
@fightingfantasy
gamebooks. And I don’t know why I didn’t ask them at the time!
My new
@fightingfantasy
book SHADOW OF THE GIANTS will be published in August by
@scholasticuk
to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. The amazing cover is by ex-Fable artist
@widigantrippe
who also illustrated the beautifully detailed internal art.
The painting behind the news reader was actually for the box cover of the UK edition of Runequest, not D&D. It was painted by the legendary Iain McCaig. I still own it I'm pleased to say :)

Shocked to hear the tragic news that Chris Achilleos has passed away. World renowned for his amazing art, I had the pleasure of working with him on several
#fightingfantasy
projects over the years including his incredible 1985 cover painting for Temple of Terror.
On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Deathtrap Dungeon, I'm delighted to announce I've written a 2nd sequel to be published in September. The Dungeon on Blood Island will have a cover by the amazing Iain McCaig who painted the original Deathtrap Dungeon cover.
@fightingfantasy
At last, it's a thing! DICE MEN has arrived from the printers and I'm delighted with it. Steve Jackson and I signed 1,600 copies today. Phew! It will be published on 10th November and there is still time to pledge here:

Deathtrap Dungeon is 35 years old. A lot of people have entered the deadly dungeon over the years but I wonder how many came out alive (without cheating)? 😉
Finally made it to the British Library to see their excellent Fantasy Realms of Imagination exhibition. Very proud to see The Warlock of Firetop Mountain on display there. The exhibition ends on 25th February. Hurry!
What great time we had at Fighting Fantasy Fest yesterday celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. Really pleased to have my 75mm Zagor figurine produced by

Celebrating 40 years since Steve Jackson and I opened our first Games Workshop retail shop in April 1978. Kind words in 1979 from the great Gary Gygax, co-creator and pioneer of D&D, who sadly is no longer with us.
We will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain at Fighting Fantasy Fest 4 on 3rd September with a number of new
@fightingfantasy
releases. More details soon 😉
45 years ago today on the 1st February 1975, we launched our first Games Workshop magazine Owl & Weasel. It lasted 25 issues before we levelled up to publish White Dwarf in 1977. Read all about it here: …
Video games have transformed the medium of the moving image and the global industry is now worth £200 Billion; bigger than Hollywood and the music industry combined. A social, cultural and economic phenomenon that rarely gets the credit it deserves.
Lots of people talking about a new Deathtrap Dungeon game should be developed for next-gen consoles. Agreed, but I still have fun playing the original game on the custom-painted PS1 I was given in 1998.
Hard to believe Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax sadly passed away 15 years ago. I was fortunate to know him as a friend as well as a business colleague. We owe Gary a huge debt of gratitude, especially me. I wrote his obituary in The Independent:
Here’s a little cautionary tale that I hope some of you may learn from.
In 1977, I began playing Dungeons and Dragons, having stumbled across this little white-boxed set in an obscure game store in London’s Hammersmith area, called Games Workshop (hi,
@ian_livingstone
).
And here's the book cover illustrated by the amazing Iain McCaig which is a redraw of his original drawing used on the plastic bags in our shops 40+ years ago.
My new
@fightingfantasy
book SHADOW OF THE GIANTS will be published in August by

. It was a pleasure to work with super-talented ex-Fable artist Mike McCarthy

Very pleased to see DICE MEN: The Origin Story of Games Workshop listed as a Best Seller on Amazon today. Not sure if it will fit into a Christmas stocking though...

Celebrating 40 years since Steve Jackson and I opened our first Games Workshop retail shop in April 1978. We should do a reunion photo with everybody in the queue. I met Oliver (photo) last year who was first in line but where are the others? Please contact me!

Brilliant to see legendary games designer Hidetaka Miyazaki at the
#BAFTAGamesAwards
last night. He told me he was a fan of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain in his youth! Great that Elden Rings won two BAFTAs but some surprise in the room that his epic game did not win Best Game.
