A free e-book of 50 design cheat codes brewed by the design team
@urbancompany_UC
.
All the codes are tried and tested by us.
Launching this Monday 🚀. A select few will get physical copies as well.
Stay tuned!
Most Indians are one hospital bill away from sliding into poverty.
This has consistently been on my mind since the day I heard it articulated like this.
It's true. It's sad. It's eye-opening.
Been in Chandni chowk only 2 hours.
One advice:
Leave your software job and just sell lehngas.
I am at a loss of words.
Lehngas north of 1 lakh rupees flying off the counters.
Earn Rs.100.
Tax Rs.30. You get Rs.70.
Invest Rs. 70.
At 15% cagr, get Rs.140 in 5 yrs.
Pay Rs.7 LTCG on Rs.70 capital gains.
You net Rs.133.
At 6% inflation, Original Rs.100 = Rs.133
You just reclaimed what you earned!
If you're going to work for a startup, think like a VC!
Start understanding business models, chances of survival, management, market etc.
Find a potential winner & invest your most precious resource in it: Your time!
Jumping every 18 months sadly doesn't work very well.
As a principle, we always strive to do right by our users and our partners.
We will fix this by next week, Tuesday.

My dad (late 60s, not tech savvy) got confused by one of the worst dark patterns I've ever seen inside the Urban Company app, and ended up paying for UC plus even though he didn't mean to. They automatically add a 6 month membership to your cart and make it confusing to remove
Clarification:
I didn't comment on India or Indian middle class. India has given me everything. Only meant we have a way to go with indigenous manufacturing, taxes etc. So we can consume better.
I left job offers in US & Singapore right out of college bcoz I love my India!
@letsblinkit
This is not good blinkit. Anyone who is using your app is might not be rich. We are using your app because we cant go outside because of some problem. You are charging a lot money for a daily use thing( milk) . And you never reply for damaged products.
@audiinidesign
I'm sure but listen to this. A 40-50 sq. ft. shop here goes for ~8cr and a 400 sq. ft. showroom with 3 floors is around 80-90 cr. If you can get someone to sell. Digest that!
Hiring over years, I've realised that the best folks aren't looking out actively.
And they'll generally never do an assignment if you can get them interested.
Just hired 2 students from my alma mater IITG through campus placements.
The Design department has been able to improve the output quality by manifolds since I last walked through those doors.
Excited about the trajectory! 🚀
@IITGuwahati
A timeless piece of wisdom I got 5 years ago from
@abhirajbhal
:
'Most blue-collar workers do everything we do, with 1/10th the money. Housing, education, leisure, marriages etc. Imagine the uncertainty and complexity.
And we think we're more intelligent'.
This is good design!
Companies are able to offer you 10-min. deliveries at such low additional delivery rates, by optimising for revenue in creative ways.
The users benefit from this as much as the company does.
In this screenshot from Blinkit you can see the conway’s law in action where ad revenue is prioritised. The order tracking screen has 50% of screen real estate is an ad and only then you see the order status). As a user I want to see my order status first before anything else.
Just realized that I completed 5 years at
@urbancompany_UC
a week ago.
Unparalleled ownership and a world-class team, are possibly the 2 biggest reasons out of a sea of great things I can mention.
On to the next 5! 🚀
Junior folks who are early in their career:
If you are being trusted with high-stakes stuff, you're in a great place.
You'll grow exponentially and there's not a better indicator of the org valuing you.
Seeing the IKEA reception in Bangalore, I just wonder what the launch of Gurgaon IKEA will be like.
Delhi NCR has 2.8 crore people and the roads are motorable.
It'll be a massacre!
Tata motors overtook Hyundai to become the second-highest car-selling brand in India!
They changed the Indian car market forever.
• Made safest cars
• Beautiful new design language
• Killer pricing
All this in the last 4-5 years. Phenomenal!

Here's how's we did it 🧵
First year of streaming IPL and JioCinema already has done a better job than Hotstar
#ipl2023

• Neat, snappy UI
• Access to everything in landscape mode
• No lag whatsoever in streaming
Work at a place that sets you up for success. A place that gives you ample room to shine using your craft whilst improving at it.
Urban Company is right now that place for visual/motion designers. The playground is open for you.
We're hiring.
Unpopular design opinion:
A popup/bottomsheet on another popup/bottomsheet is not bad UX.
As long as both are initiated linearly because of a user action.
Write more. First for yourself, then others.
Most people just write for others. Trying to figure out what'll sound intelligent to others.
When you write for yourself, it's messy, unorganised and you question evey bit of your thought process.
The designer's curse of not enjoying good products/apps like normal users but try to learn from, steal and replicate the good bits in your own product.
@Avdhoot_7
Yes. But most people will need that money for some big expense much earlier than that. Largely because India is a low-income country and the investments after expenses are low.
@surivinam
No no. The platform has incentives to promote influencers. Every second post in the feed is a sponsored post. Then there are suggested reels in the feed.
I can't mindlessly scroll through the feed like I used to once.
100 million+ diabetics in India now!
No good startup solving for this yet.
This no. is going to grow.
Diabetes monitoring, control, lifestyle coaching etc. is going to be huge.
Abhiraj Bhal (
@abhirajbhal
) is the CEO of
@urbancompany_UC
He is one of my favorite leaders and thinkers.
I have the privilege of working closely with him at UC. Here are 4 learnings I have had from him.
Thread 👇
Career hack: Be the first designer at an early stage startup that has:
🌟 Superb idea
🌟 Kick-ass team
🌟 Extremely successful pilot
🌟 Strong backing
Willing to explore? I'll collect you to the founding team. DM or reply.
Ran into the legendary
@ImIshant
sir today.
Thanked him for one of my best cricketing memories - his incredible spell to Ponting! 🏏🇮🇳
Also, told him I'm 6'1" and still felt short next to him! 😅

Watch the magic:
Preventing problems > Solving problems
But workplaces have it reverse.
Teams that firefight daily are taken to be more driven over teams that execute silently and efficiently.
Understand your wins. Gratification from things that don't align to your goals is going to put you into a bubble and off the track faster than you will realise.
10 bad financial traits I see in people around me:
1. Thinking being value-aware is being stingy
2. Leaking money on small purchases. Death by thousand cuts
3. Expecting future income basis previous rate of growth
4. Growing aspiration basis expected future income
The 70-hour debate is useless.
The market, conditions, ambitions etc. define what's needed.
I've worked 80-hours for weeks on stretch and 32-hours at other times.
Whatever was needed at that point.
If you're on a boat, you row to keep it afloat. However needed.
One of my fav. POVs of looking at
@urbancompany_UC
opportunity came from
@abhirajbhal
back in the day:
'Home services is probably the last traditional trillion dollar market that doesn't have a $100bn company yet.'
Travel, housing, food etc. all have multiple.
@KaustubhKale
Nopes. You actually earned those Rs.100. That was the measure of the value you created and what you pocketed. Only if you got healthcare or educational benefits as a return on the tax.
I believe 'Tata' is one of the world's best brands. Even more so than Apple.
The trust spans across generations, religions and languages in the Indian subcontinent. Since 100+ years.
The trust that they'll do what's right, is the highest form of trust.

A few sad things:
1. People literally thinking I advised them to open a shop in Chandni Chowk vs. suggesting to explore business ideas outside of jobs
2. People think software engineering. is easy
3. Thinking abusing someone gives them intellectual superiority

@abhinavjdwij
Sorry. The tweet didn't articulate my thoughts well. I meant the larger friend groups of school folks, college folks etc. The actual fun of social media.
CRUEL!
India: 10 wins, 11 played
Aus: 9 wins, 11 played
Beat each other once.
India better on every single stat and metric.
Yet, one gets called World champion.
@iamjaglan
Not true. assignments are ok in lieu of portfolio not being up to date because the folks were not actively looking. So the first round can be assignment instead of portfolio discussion. It’s the same effort for designer
Sometimes when I am typing, I just stop for a few seconds to just appreciate how beautiful the fonts generally are. The typing experience as a whole feels magic sometimes.
