A really interesting insider take on how Coke's "thanda matlab Coca Cola' campaign helped it beat Pepsi in India - and became so successful that the India team developed local 'thanda' campaigns for other Asian markets
Some news -
@EndemolShineIND
has optioned Empire for a tv series. If this makes it to the screen I hope they keep Anantha's scar and Aremis' ordinary face. Am excited and a little in disbelief that this is happening, even after the contract signing.
@varungrover
Not an NS supporter, but what exactly is she supposed to do? The Fed is raising rates, and the INR has fallen less than most other currencies.

Worked on campaigns, and Ankhi Das is an actively political player in Delhi and not at all a neutral party. Having her take the calls for Facebook on hate politics is just dangerous.

Army work is paid for out of the grant the Centre gives the state, and then remainder billed separately to the state government. This is not given freely. You learned something today, congratulations
It's a real honor to be part of

longlist, alongside writers I love and respect. Thank you
@juggernautbooks
for supporting Empire from its haphazard first draft.

Avasarala is my favorite and is even more badass in the books. It bothered me a little that the show defanged her - she loses an election, her husband gets pissed at her, etc - none of which happens in the book series.
My niece (who is 13 and adorable, but this I can't forgive) told me she heard that the Joker and Robin are the same person. Robin is a long con the Joker is playing.
Hug your loved ones close and protect them from terrible fan theories.

At 22, the cheapest (non smart) mobile phone I could find. Was pretty devastated when because of my absent-mindedness, I lost it eight months later.
Siddhanth Batra, the kid in the article, is a family member. This is a future case study of bad UX: the IIT link was weirdly phrased, and provided no confirmation message that he was in fact, cancelling his seat:

One of our groups is doing this. Each of us has adopted three families and make cash transfers to them once every month - so far approx 130 families have a sponsor
Rajasthani Mewar court painter Chokha painted 'Escapade at Night' in 1800. Check out the blinged out horse - the Mewar king was very fond of his animals (the best hunting dogs got their own zari coats) and Chokha has paid more attention here to the horse than the humans.
@ranyamanivannan
Agree with this. Have been to a few, and noticed that it's increasingly drowned in spectacle and attention to the latest 'controversial quote'. Very little discussion on actual books and writing (regional litfests are a bit better with this)
@S_Saeen
Hard to believe
@samharris
is citing Afghanistan as a signal for moral inferiority with a straight face, considering that Russian and US interventions made the Taliban into what it is today. And continuing trade restrictions imposed by the US still limit its economic development
Most of the world's naval forces allow women on warships, but very few people know that 800-900 years ago in Chola Navy, women in large numbers played a significant role in war. They infact used to participate in war: PM Narendra Modi

and I did a podcast episode for the BIC, on Sex in Indian Epics and Literature. We talk about Parvathi's rain scene in the Kumarasambhavam, Scheherazade's storytelling in the Arabian Nights, and so on. It's sanskaari in all the right ways.

1) for dishes like pasta, oven roast the tomatoes first. the resulting umami flavor is well worth the effort
2) miso improves any dish which calls for chicken stock
3) stir fries that have onions as an ingredient become much tastier with a leek also added in

I read a lot of history, but never really planned to write on it until I stumbled on Rajendra Chola. A king with ambitions outside the Indian continent, who took his navy to East Asia for conquests - I found that fascinating!

This has really bothered me ever since I started filling out college applications, government and finance forms. Yet another signal that no matter what I do, someone else's name and identity matters more.
Update: Siddhanth Batra has got his IIT Bombay seat. There was an interim order four weeks ago allowing him to sit for classes, and the SC confirmed his admission today 🙌🏽

Not a supporter of the Nehru bashing, but this game is self-defeating. Vaclav Havel, Lee Kuan Yew (especially with his stance on corruption), and the third since he was the first head of state elected in a fully democratic election - Nelson Mandela.

Give me a break. I'm a Hindu, and a religion or philosophy that cannot handle criticism is no religion at all. It doesn't need you to defend it.
Difficult to think rationally in

encounter case. The brutality of crime so huge , some strong message needed to go to anyone who doesn’t believe in women’s safety.

The Dhanraj Bhagat sculpture exhibit at ngma had some lovely pieces. Didn't know he had worked with metal as well. The sculpture in the photo is 'Cry'.
Taken during a visit home this week. The state is full of interesting graffiti, done by local artists. Here is

painted on a rock near the sea.

Islam survived it, did it not? There edifice is not going to collapse because people are discussing the meanings of verses. Get a grip.
Found this during some research, a photo from the late 90s. Worth sharing for 1) the name of the photographer 2) the screen size of the computer 3) online trolling already being alive and well in the early years of the internet.

You don't know much history. Havel was the first president (hence ff, with a great deal of moral authority) of the Czech Republic. And Mandela served out an entire five year term.
@nand_bo
I hear this a lot, and to be fair readers of indian writing have a lot of dross to wade through to get the good stuff - and discovery is still hard, unlike with international writers where you hear only about the best
