Mind you, this happened in Houston - one of the top human trafficking hubs in the US. At 10:30am on a Monday - so unexpected. - Check the license plate before entering the car. - Ask the driver who they’re picking up. Don’t say your name. Wait for them to say it.

Thank GOD I was paying attention enough to check the plate to get in the car. And the guy was so seemingly nice. Didn’t “seem” creepy at all. He saw my actual Uber driver and I speaking and he then drove off, which means he wasn’t actually there to pick up anyone.

Specific dates will lock you into prices. If you aren’t obligated to be somewhere on certain dates search for flights first, THEN choose dates based off what’s the most affordable. Then request time off based on that.

If you’re open, think Hostels. Hostels are a big reason many people can travel. Why pay hundreds for a hotel when you can pay $10-$25 a night, & less in most cases. You can book a private room, but still meet other travelers. Great for solo travelers! Check @hostelworld

On my recent trip to NOLA, the driver had her boyfriend in the passenger seat. Once again, thankfully I saw him when I opened the door - despite it being dark. She goes “I’ll cancel the ride if you don’t feel comfortable”. You damn skippy. Uber does NOT allow that.

When I’m walking, I’m fully aware of what’s happening around me. I keep an eye on cars driving past me or anyone that slows/quicken their speed near me. I listen to footsteps & watch shadows. Mind you, this all applies to a woman who lives on her own too.

It’s made me hyper aware of my surroundings. There’s no other option. Pay attention to the people in your surroundings, both near & far. Scan your surroundings. Is someone walking close to you? Does someone appear to be watching you? Did that car just pull beside you & slow down?

There is a lot of romanticization of solo travel. Yes, it can be amazing, but it's not a walk in the park. It's not 'easy'. It's nothing like a vacation with family & friends. But it's so empowering and there's a lot to be gained from the experience.

Are you in college? Study abroad, ask your school about scholarships. Sometimes a semester exchange is actually cheaper than your schools tuition. You never know until you ask.

Location, location. Where are you going? Places like Australia, the US, & Western Europe will be way more expensive than Mexico, Central America, parts of South America, South East Asia, Eastern Europe & parts of Africa.
