After thinking I'd never go back to working as a Software Engineer again, the universe had other plans. I started as a Sr. iOS Dev at
@matterxyz
3 weeks ago, and I'm genuinely having so much fun. Youtubing has become a side gig once more, and yes, video on this is coming soon.
Y'ALL. I HAVE A PODCAST!😱I present: if/else. In each episode, we meet a software dev who needs to make an if/else choice. We cover the hard & soft skills you need for a sustainable and rewarding career in tech. Can't wait for y'all to listen! First ep on Oct 7th!
@ifelsepodcast
So I've got some news. I left my job at Patreon and I haven't made a video in forever. It took me a long time to find the words and courage to post this, but I finally posted a video about why I left, and what I've been up to. Check it out:
Introducing, my new Youtube series! 🎊🎉💐🌻 How to Kickstart Your Software Engineering Career. A 7 part series, released weekly, for those of you stepping into your first Software Engineering role. Check it out here:
Got a new Nintendo Switch recently to play some Super Smash Bros. I’ve been practicing playing some new characters other than Kirby and now my thumb hurts lol. Thanks to
@BestBuy
for fueling my gaming needs. ICYMI, my tech haul gadgets video:

“Why is diversity and inclusion so important? 😤 is it even an issue?”
Y’all. As a tech industry, we work WITH people on things FOR people. What part of your career makes you think that learning about people, their backgrounds, and perspectives isn’t a core part of the job? 🤨
I've got some news to share: my husband and I moved out of Silicon Valley. It's a wild time to move, but we're really happy with our decision and are enjoying our new life in sunny San Diego.
What do you think the world would look like if the tech industry slowed down a lil bit? My (perhaps naive) guesses:
👆Less burnout
👆More thoughtful and intentional technology
👆More mentorship & training for jr. devs
Nobody:
Me: dammit Mayuko you haven’t even touched any of the new stuff from Apple this week like SwiftUI and literally everyone else has it running and ready it’s like you’re not even a real iOS developer do you even really like coding
Also me: 🖕you imposter syndrome
Tech folks, preferably Software Engineers: When you think back to when you first started your career, what nuggets of advice and wisdom do you wish you had been taught (in school, or otherwise) to prepare you for your career and life ahead?
I'm making a video about Self Taught Software Engineers! I'm looking for folks to interview about their journey, experiences, and advice in a recorded 45 minute call next week (clips of footage may be used in the final video). Reply or DM me if interested!
Hi. I reached 100K subscribers yesterday on Youtube and 10K followers on Instagram. Thank you to every single person who's subscribed, watched, liked, commented, and shared my videos. I just. wow. Thank you. 💖
As someone who’s day in the life in tech video also went viral in 2017, yes, of course we do. Can we stop questioning everybody’s credibility and hard working-ness based on the content we make for fun 😐
Fam. PSA. Things I am not:
- stack overflow
- hiring for Software Engineers
- single nor looking
- a web, JavaScript, Android, AI/Blockchain/self driving car/<insert tech trend here> expert
It's been two months since I moved out of Silicon Valley and... I feel so much more relaxed (or as much as I could be, during COVID). No longer counting days as "good" or "bad" based on productivity, and I don't feel guilty doing things that aren't work.
Happy

!!! I finally made a video where I talk about my cultural identity and what it was like to grow up Japanese and American. I'm super proud of this one and excited for y'all to watch it! Watch here:
Mmhmm that feeling of getting in the flow and then realizing you weren’t even coding, you were editing a video and now it’s an hour past your bedtime and wow tmrw will probably feel bad cuz no sleep but at least you stayed up doing a creative thing you love and wow........ life.
May I present: Code with Friends! For the month of May,
@squatkong
and I are hosting an online coding event where we’ll all work on our coding projects together! Come join us! More deets here:
#CodeWithFriends2020
I'm a Yappie. A Young, Asian, Professional. I've been thinking a lot about how my cultural identity has influenced my worldview, especially when it comes to how I make life decisions. And it turns out that it plays a really big role. So I made a video.
I'm making a video to learn more about the Japanese tech industry. I'd like to interview people in tech who are Japanese/work in Japan to learn more in the next few days. Please reply or DM if you're available and willing to be in a video and share with me your thoughts!
Me before bed: too tired from the day, gonna wake up early and work on things that make me happy before I go to work tomorrow!
Me in the morning: woke up too late, gonna stay up tonight and get things done before going to sleep!
<repeat>
@venikunche
Provide feedback to the candidate, always. Like where the candidate did well, where they didn’t so well, what strengths and weaknesses you were able to identify. And be honest about the decision behind the offer/no offer. I felt immensely valued when a team did this once for me.
When Siri and I met for the first time, she kept autocorrecting my name to Mayakovsky (a Russian poet’s name). Reminds me of school teachers/adults who couldn’t bother to learn my name and was like “dO yOu hAvE aNoThEr (easier, whiter) nAmE?”
I've been on Youtube for ONE WHOLE YEAR 😱 it has been literally the most incredible year for me; I've learned SO much about YouTubing, the world, myself, and more. And naturally, as someone who feels a lot of things, I made a video about it:
I honestly didn’t think it was possible but I think I’m an extrovert now? I mean people are incredibly complex and so learning about people and hearing their thoughts and what they have to say gives me so much energy and motivation idk????
Jarvis is one of those friends that come around once in a lifetime. And I’m so friggin excited about his new chapter of life. Congrats, I’m proud of you, you rock
@jarvis
So honored to have my story published in
@BusinessInsider
about how I realized that Hustle Culture wasn't for me, based on the video I made earlier this year:
Does anyone have any book recommendations for the topic of ethics x society x tech? Textbooks, papers, journals, all resources are welcome. I’m hungry to learn more.
Anyone hiring a designer? My brother just graduated from design bootcamp and is looking for his first role. He's one of the most analytical and empathetic people I know, and he's eager to help people with his new skills in design! 💖
DM me for leads, and please RT for reach 🙏
Y'ALL. Code with Friends is coming back in October!!! CWF is a month-long coding event where folks from all over the world come together to work on their personal tech projects. Signups will open next week, and our CWF Orientation Stream will be on Tuesday, Sept 22 at 8:30AM PST!
My comments section looks way better than it did when I first started YT (lots of derogatory and rude comments at me and others smdh), but I just found this new feature by
@YouTube
to set channel guidelines and I just wanna say thank you the PM/Design/Engs who did this, truly.
Dropping today: the Limited Edition code Crewneck in Mint! Perfect for a warm winter or chilly spring day 🌼 Preorder yours now before they're gone forever:
oh damn, yo gurl is nominated for Most Inspiring Presentation in the Swift Community Awards! Your vote would mean a lot to me, esp if you're in the Swift/iOS community! 🙏
The last time I bought some
@mujiusa
pens was 2016ish, and I finally bought some new ones recently. The only difference in 6+ years: older versions (L) have a shorter tip vs the newer ones (R) are a bit more elongated. The new ones are a lot more comfortable to write with.
The first episode of my new podcast,
@ifelsepodcast
is out!!! 😱😱😱 We explore the decision of going to a bootcamp vs a 4 year CS degree program. Listen now wherever you listen to your podcasts:
I recently got invited to a fb group for my 10 yr HS reunion and I literally feel all the emotions that movies have taught me about this occasion: “omg I’m gonna show the popular kids my glow-up as a professional working woman”, “wow so many people have babies”, and “oh nooooo”
And yes, my team is hiring an iOS Dev: we’re a seasoned but tiny team, the work is really interesting, it’s fully remote, and we work a 4 day workweek:

🍎 NEW VIDEO!!🍎 WWDC is next month so I'm making 2 videos this month related to iOS development. I get a lot of questions on what the best resources for getting started on iOS development are, so here's a video where I talk about my favorite ones!
Allllllllright people, I'm jumping back into making videos with none other than a Q&A! What life/software engineering/makeup/music/dog/idk questions do you have for me?
Anyone who knows Android development interested in a mentorship opportunity? We're looking for some volunteers to help out folks who are working on their personal project in Android using Java and/or Kotlin for Code With Friends! DM me if you're interested, please RT for reach!
I’m featured in this letter today and I’m feeling so humbled. It ain’t easy to make a job that’s never existed before while battling major anxiety but I’m feeling like this is one of those moments that make me feel glad about the hills I’ve climbed to get here.
Today I updated the YouTube community on our priorities for 2021. Read more about our plans to grow the creator economy, live up to our responsibilities, help people learn, build for the future & advocate for creators on regulatory issues:
Y’all got any good reading recommendations to learn more about society x technology x design? Like, stuff on how to make better technology that serves people and societies (and adjacent topics too).
y'all i am getting to talk to so many cool people for this upcoming video I'm making about Silicon Valley and the Tech Industry so get PUMPED BECAUSE I AM
first-world reasons about why I went into SWE (that I remembered recently)
🎵 i can listen to music while working
🎙️ i can even listen to music w/lyrics without getting distracted because (at least for me) it doesn't conflict with my thoughts
🚽 i can go to the bathroom whenever
Good Monday Morning! When I went to Stockholm last month, I met up with
@mpjme
and
@silveira_bells
and interviewed them about their tech career, their current challenges, and what they think is the most important skill as a Software Engineer💖Check it out:
So who knows what the future holds. But I'm really happy right now. And I'm excited. And having fun. And I'm really glad that I prioritized that for myself this year (and really lucky that I could).
New video! Ever wonder how to think about your relationship with your manager/boss at work? Do you get stuck on what to talk about in your 1 on 1s with them? I have a new video explaining all that, with a PDF guide!
@AmarachiAmaechi
Companies who want to hire to make a diverse team but aren’t willing to hire newcomers like college grads or boot camp grads because it’s “risky” 🙄 And they rely on other companies to hire them instead and do the work to diversify the tech workforce 🙊
Btw, this year Muko's Corner will be a regular show about becoming a better version of yourself for your life and your tech career. We'll talk about navigating a career in technology and leading a life that feels more You. Lmk what topics or guests you'd like to see! 👇👇👇
🆕video! Since I’ve never lived/worked in Japan for a long time, I decided to explore the intersection of three major parts of my life: Japan, Technology, and Silicon Valley. How did Japan’s tech industry fall behind? What challenges does it currently face?
Honestly I'm a huge fan of what
@Spotify
's been working on to make listening to music easier and more fun. I genuinely feel like my quality of life is higher thanks to their product, and I can't say that about everything out there.
#SpotifyStreamOn
NEW VIDEO! My first "tutorial", where I help orient you on using Xcode, Apple's code editor for making iOS apps. I hope you enjoyed the 2 iOS videos this month as WWDC is coming up next month! Watch here:
Wow. Thank you
@tryswiftconf
for having me and for creating a space for this incredible community for people in Japan and abroad to connect. I will never forget these unique experiences I’ve had. Thanks mom & dad for teaching me Japanese. It really paid off 💖💖

SO excited to have my dear friend
@jarvis
on Muko's Corner this week! We'll talk about Leaving Our Tech Careers: how/why we did it, how we helped each other, and if we have any regrets. Reply with questions 👇 and RSVP here:
Been in japan since last week. Each time I come back I have a new perspective about this place. I don’t really know how to put it into words, (esp as my English has deteriorated over the last week 😅) but I think it’s a mixture of nostalgia, detachment, anxiety, and gratitude.
The other night I called a restaurant for a take-out order and as I said my name and started to spell it (as I usually do on the phone cuz non-English name), they interrupted me and said “Mayuko? Okay what would you like?” And I felt so seen
If you still don’t understand how microaggressions in the tech industry work against people from underrepresented minorities, think about how what you got bullied for as a kid (because you were slightly different) stuck with you through your adult life.
NEW video! Diving back into vlogging with a day in the life video. No Saturday is complete without brunching, napping, and spending some time doing creative stuff. ☺️
I did my first ever conference talk at a tech conference back in March at
@tryswiftconf
. It definitely helped me grow in ways I didn't expect, from learning late that the audience size was 1000 to writing a bilingual talk. Here's a vlog of my experience:
I'm looking for iOS engineers to be a part of Hanko Hangouts again for our Spring 2022 cohort! It's a mixer event for our budding iOS Dev students to meet industry iOS Devs (that's you!) to talk about iOS, career journeys, and share advice! DM me with your info if interested.
We had a blast yesterday at our Hanko Hangout introducing our students to some amazing and knowledgeable iOS Engineers! Thanks to all our guests!
We'll have another Hanko Hangout next cohort, so reach out if you're interested in being a guest or joining us as a future student💮
I’m giving my talk tomorrow
@tryswiftconf
at 5:35PM on how we can extend a hand to the next generation of Swift developers! This talk is very near to my heart, and I will be doing the talk in both English and Japanese. Hope to see you there!
#tryswiftconf
New video!! I interview
@jorge_vgut
(LatinCoder) about his experience moving to the US to work at Amazon. For anyone who’s wondering what it’s like to come work in the US for tech, including visas and learning English, check it out:
NEW VIDEO! I used to think a lot about how I should dress to my Software Engineering job. Feeling the pressure to "fit in" was a huge part of why I decided to dress how I did before. But I've realized a couple of things since I graduated college. Watch:
