Literary Agent, on maternity leave. Great job, great hair. RNA Agent of the Year 2020. Bookseller Rising Star 2020 🌟 Views my own. Trans liberation now.
I'm now on maternity leave and my submissions are closed. You can submit to another agent at The Blair Partnership here:
Please keep an eye out for details of when I reopen.
Sometimes editors ask me if I've spotted any trends in submissions during lockdown and I have to tell you... an awful lot of people have decided to write the memoirs of their pets.
Publishing: Why do so few socio-economically disadvantaged people work in publishing?
Socio-economically disadvantaged people: why would we want to work in the most expensive city in the UK for less than a living wage and no career progression?
Publishing: SUCH A MYSTERY
@zoe_grunewald
I did get taught to brush my teeth in primary school? A dentist came in, made us chew the funny plaque sweets, showed us where we needed to focus our brushing?
Authors! I am open for fiction submissions. You can now send your submissions direct to me at hattiesubmissions
@theblairpartnership
.com. Please send a cover letter, a synopsis and the first thirty pages/three chapters of your manuscript.
I'm sorry I know we're under pressure right now but I have to say it: All Synopses are boring. It's impossible to write an interesting synopsis. I read the synopsis and I'm bored. Please stop worrying about trying to make your synopsis interesting.
You don't need to pay money to get published. You don't need expensive editing or writing courses. There is no "dreaded slush pile". There are just a lot of submissions read democratically. Be wary of anyone who tells you to pay to skip the queue.
Why do so many men feel the need to respond to standard rejection emails telling me that if it were up to agents like me, writers like Orwell would never have seen the light of day? It's ok guys!! Someone already published Orwell!
The discussion of good communication practices between publishers, agents and authors has made me do a lot of thinking and self-evaluation over the last month or so. Communication is a big priority for me: something I think I do well, but can always improve.
@juliasreading
I'm trying to stay in a "positive stories only" place but it feels like social media is currently full of people (quite fairly) sharing awful stories 😕 should probably delete twitter for a bit! (But mat leave is quite boring without it)
I don't feel like this baby is anywhere near arriving so if people could suggest good mat leave activities, books, TV shows etc that would be appreciated before I have a complete identity crisis
@zoe_grunewald
Strategy also seems to overlook that many pensioners and boomers have kids, and are currently having to pay for their mortgage deposits, nursery fees, tuition fees etc.
We don't reject your work because there aren't page numbers. We don't reject it because it's single spaced instead of double spaced. We don't reject your work based on what font you use. As long as you're presenting your work clearly and professionally, you're good 👍
This week I've offered rep to a writer I'm really excited about, I'm line editing a really brilliant novel, I'm reading a really good submission, and I'm brainstorming some fantastic new book ideas with a couple of my authors. It's weeks like this that I love my job.
When I say I've never seen anything like the level of excitement. 14-way German auction, something like 70 publishers offering from around the world. This book is so special. Watch this space.
Dreamed I got sent for an extra scan and they discovered the baby was a horse. When I queried how the midwife had previously overlooked this she said "you'd be surprised how often it happens."
Moving to the countryside is all well and good but I just ordered a decaf latte at the station and the lady made me a Nescafé sachet and charged me £3.25.
I am over the moon to be nominated for Agent of the Year by the fabulous
@RNAtweets
. A phenomenal organisation filled with wonderful, friendly, generous writers - it is such an honour.
Don't start your book with your character getting up in the morning. Don't start your book with your character describing their reflection in the mirror. Don't start your book by describing the weather.
If you break these rules, do it well and with a bloody good reason.
I chose my wedding dress this weekend. And we also got the catering contract through. I keep looking at my dress and my wedding breakfast menu and my heart is just so full of excitement and joy 🥰
I just can't stop crying. Things have felt so bad for so long and like they would never get better, like we were going backwards and the bad guys would always win. I just feel so much relief and hope.
It's been a weird fair because people keep coming up and saying "congratulations!!" And I don't know if it's about my huge book deal or if they've seen that I'm pregnant.
Going through my submissions for the first time since my wedding and really ITCHING to sign some new novelists. So I thought it was time for a new

. This time it's not genres, just ✨vibes✨
Well, my first month in my new job was certainly exciting! Congratulations

Just a note that middle class people should also be filling this in and acknowledging how our class has benefited us or the results will be totally screwed up 🙃
It's my last day at
@BFLAgency
today and I'm already so emotional. I have been so so lucky to begin my career here with such inspiring and generous people, I can't even begin to express my gratitude.
This week marks my ten year anniversary of working in publishing! I am incredibly lucky to have fallen so easily into a career I absolutely love. Thank you
@BlakeFriedmann
for taking a chance on me ten years ago, and
@TBP_agency
my current home. Here's to many more decades!

, I think of the bravery of my great grandmother, sending her only son away on the Kindertransport, saving his life and allowing me and my family to be here today. Thank you.
it's true, if a writer sent me 1984 today, I probably wouldn't offer representation... I'd be like "dude, this reads a lot like that george orwell novel 1984"
Please keep my beloved Grandpa Heinz in your thoughts. He is not doing so well. Here he is at my wedding, the greatest joy to have him there. A remarkable man, and the most loving grandfather.

I think of my great-grandparents, who did not make it to liberation day.
I think of their bravery in sending away their youngest son, and the generosity of those who took him in and allowed him to grow old here.
For the sake of fairness, I feel like I have to say that this came from a woman (or so the name would suggest). I have previously suggested that only men do this, and been proven wrong.
There needs to be an extra hour between 6am and 7am. The transition between "very early, need more sleep" and "time to get up and go to work" is too abrupt.
This week:
1 new author signed
1 author shortlisted for a prize
1 author reprinting after fantastic sales figures
2 debut authors with offers on their books
What a fantastic post-LBF week! Happy weekend!
My submissions email goes straight to me. I don't have an assistant filtering it. I'm not fobbing anyone off. It's the best way to send me a submission. Submissions that go to my main inbox are more likely to be mis-filed, lost or never read.
I signed so many brilliant authors last year and planning their edits/sub letters/world domination this year is bringing me so much joy. Literally can't wait to send their books to editors.
Yes this is why I've barely slept for a month from all the excitement! Congratulations
@ClareEmpson2
- 26 countries (incl. UK/US) and counting, and more secret brilliant news to come for this unputdownable novel 🤯
Does anyone else find January the most exhausting/overwhelming month? I know moving house won't have helped me here, but that pressure to be back on your shit when everyone else is also back on their shit so your to do list is ten times as long... I need a breather already!
This morning we were watching the third episode of a TV show and my boyfriend was like "wait, who's this character? I've never seen her before" and it was literally the main character with her hair tied up for the first time
