So no, these portraits do not represent ancient Greeks or Romans. These portraits represent imperial age Egyptians with a limited degree of admixture, not only Greek.

It is estimated that 30% of the population of Faiyum was Greek during the Ptolemaic period, with the rest being native Egyptians. By the Roman period, much of the "Greek" population of Faiyum was made-up of either Hellenized Egyptians or people of mixed Egyptian-Greek origins.

Ancient Roman statues were hyper realistic. Showing wrinkles, they represented wisdom and experience, invaluable qualities of the model man the statue represented. Mos maiorum (the ways of the ancestors) was the moral core of ancient Roman society.

Mummy portraits have been found across Egypt, but are most common in the Faiyum Basin. The Faiyum mummy portraits were an innovation dating to the time of Roman rule in Egypt and date to the Imperial Roman era, from the late 1st century BC or the early 1st century AD onwards.

If you had the patience to read this thread, you have learned that southern Calabrians are direct descendants of the ancient Greeks, even if most of them forgot that. Unfortunately my home town isn’t one in which Greko survived, though it’s full of ancient Greek ruins.
