We have much to be proud of India at 75! But the truth is that it is a story of private success and public failure. Here is my assessment in today’s Times of India.

I lost my friends on the Left when I voted for Modi. I lost my friends on the Right when I criticised Modi for demo and majoritarianism. Surrounded by Modi bhakts and Modi haters, I am the man-in-the-middle, but many Indians are like me.

It is a sad day when democracy defeats sanity. On November 18, the government made a dramatic retreat on the farm laws. It’s a clear setback for the economy and a return to the politics of freebies. All reformers have failed to sell the competitive market to the Indian people.

In 1947, Britain packed up and left India, leaving behind absent-mindedly the English language and a headache for Indians. Ever since, we’ve been quarrelling over the place of English in our lives, particularly in what language to teach our children.

The private school sector is growing at a massive pace. Nearly 50% of India's children attend private schools, and we need to provide the sector more autonomy if we want improved learning outcomes for them. My piece in @httweets #StateOfPrivateSchools

If tiny countries in Asia can compete, why can’t India? Why is it still an infant, needing protection, after 72 years? Get over export pessimism. ‘Make in India’ should be ‘Make in India for the World’. No nation has become prosperous without exports.

To expect reforms before an election is like getting a pig to sing. It not only wastes your time, but annoys the pig. Although this Budget didn’t announce big reforms, it chose investment over consumption, job creation over freebies, and long-term dignity and prosperity of Indian

The market system has still not found a comfortable home in India. Even though India has risen via the reforms--lifting 350 million out of poverty--too many still believe the market makes the rich richer and poor poorer. 'Mann ki baat’ can help to change this.

Mumbai’s commercial origins makes its people nicer than, say Delhi, whose origins are feudal. If you don’t make CEO, you’re free to move on your competitor’s company. Not like Delhi where there’s only one king, one PM, you’ve to stab some to get ahead.
