Other observations I have concerning Shadow the Hedgehog and Amy Rose: SA2: - Only Amy has seen him cry. - Shadow bids her goodbye, explains his abrupt departure, and includes her in his promise. StH2: - Shadow narrates that he had no reason to help Amy but figured to anyway.

Don't you see? The reason why Sonic has the dynamic he has with Amy is not because there's something "wrong" with Amy. The outcome is not really dependent on whether Sonic loves Amy back. It's dependent on Sonic's character, which is oil to the water that is orthodox romance.
