the artist that was ultimately chosen to create the artwork for the โWhite Albumโ was Richard Hamilton, who designed the albumโs completely white cover, its inner gatefold, and the collage poster that came with the original (and current) pressings of the album
Alan Alridgeโs aforementioned โThe Beatles Illustrated Lyricsโ was published in 1969, and this artwork was later used as the album cover for โThe Beatles Balladsโ pictured below, a compilation album that came out in 1980:
Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn confirmed that Apple โcommissioned various designers to come up with sleeve ideasโ for the โWhite Albumโ
to my knowledge, the only rejected proposed artwork that has surfaced for the albumโs inner gatefold was done by artist Paul Whitehead:
currently making a big beatles resources masterpost w movies books etc bc ive never seen them all collected in one place ๐ญ trying to help newer fans
seeing what some of you guys comment on seanโs twtโฆ ๐ญ reminder the beatles and everyone in their circle are real people Itโs getting embarrassing even lurking
the above image is frequently incorrectly cited as being an unused album cover for The Beatlesโ self-titled album colloquially known as the โWhite Albumโ, however the artist himself, John โPatrickโ Byrne, had this to say about that claim:
as you can see, the design work and packaging for the โWhite Albumโ went through many different creative stages and proposed ideas throughout its recording sessions in 1968. in another world we couldโve had โA Dollโs Houseโ! but i love Hamiltonโs final design work for the album
the album also came with 4 smaller poster portraits of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. these portraits were photographed by John Kelly in the fall of 1968, towards the end of recording for the album
