The private hospital sector has 1900 beds & 164 ventilation rooms. HSE are in negotiations for their use. There should be NO negotiations regarding public use of them. They should be seized for public use . Private hospital sector should not be allowed to profiteer

Progress....Before Varadkar's legislation, workers had the right to request to work from home, the employer had the right to say No. After the legislation, workers will have the right to request to work from home, the employer will have the right to say No 13 different ways.
Sorry This is a long rant
Why we are where we are.
Government have failed to plan the reopening of schools properly, they have used children with additional needs as pawns. For schools to open needs a proper workable plan. The 'plan' emailed to schools on Friday night won't work
The real 'psycho-social experiment' is putting 30 unvaccinated people in a poorly ventilated room for 5 hours a day, removing contact tracing, saying open the windows & ..6,000 primary school children tested positive last week as a result. Masks won't fix it but will surely help
It is not a 6.5% pay award. It's 3% for this year, 2% from March next year and 1.5% from October. We are in year 2 of a 2-year deal, this extends that deal for a further year. We will have an effective paycut of at least 5% this year and probably over another 6% next. Vote No

demo at the Spire. Blame the economic system and the politicians, not the victims of that system. Homes, Education and Health for all
I cannot begin to imagine how much hate someone would have in them to burn down a building that has been empty for years rather than allow people with nowhere else to go to live in it.
It's disgusting to see so many people exploiting the ethnicity of the accused in the Sligo murders to stir up racism.
The far right politics behind this has contributed to the homophobic hate that so many LGBTI people suffer on a daily basis.
Their hate can not be tolerated
The priority is to keep schools open they've told us for weeks. But now education workers are no longer a priority for vaccination (not that we were a very high priority already). Does this government enjoy rubbing people's noses in it? And are we going to let them?
Not new, not unusual. When it's an opportunity to have a go at teachers
@NormaFoleyTD1
and
@josephamadigan
claim they care deeply about pupils with Additional Needs. When it comes to actually supporting those children, their families and their teachers, they fail yet again.
A little girl with autism whose severe anxiety & a lack of school supports means she can’t return to class full-time has given a HSE school services appointment for November 2026. I repeat, November 2026.
Can she please be asked to name the experts whose view it is? Can she clarify exactly where these experts collected their data? And can the experts explain what it is about schools that make them different to everywhere else in terms of how the virus transmits?
@emma_okelly
She didn't actually quote any Science, just repeated That's the Science. The chance of a teacher of any age contracting Covid is clearly stronger than someone working from home contracting it. That is common sense.
To report this accurately the headline should read that there were 516 calls from principals to the helpline over just two days. And please use a picture that accurately reflects the situation in our overcrowded classrooms - among the largest in the OECD
13. The government, whether it is deliberately or through incompetence, have divided and conquered by failing to plan and having the finger of blame pointed at teachers. It is very depressing.
Proud to stand in solidarity with Palestinian teachers and students. Government has to move beyond words. Action is needed. Enact the Occupied Territories Bill
INTO delegates greet Norma Foley in Derry this evening with placards referring to 14,600 children “brutally murdered” in Gaza, & others dying from “forced starvation”.
It's all about the 'science' we were told. But 'science' can be disregarded because u-30s are more likely to socialise. Yet people who have to socialise with up to 30 kids every day are not prioritised. Are they deliberately trying to provoke us?
This would be very hard to stomach for those of us who face high risks every day in frontline roles. What’s the priority here? Keeping schools opening or Buying the votes of the TikTok generation?
@DonnellyStephen
#edchatie
This is the sort of reporting that really infuriates many teachers. It falsely sets worker against worker. And it uses figures from a time when teachers were mostly working from home so it's a false comparison. Stop the spin and get on with vaccinating all essential workers
1. I felt very uncomfortable to see a lot of people for whom I have a lot of respect lining up in the days following Anthony Flynn's tragic death and essentially dismissing the allegations made against him.
I cannot for a minute imagine how awful it must have been for
So there are people who reckon that the same children who are learning how to do long multiplication and division won't be able to learn how to wear a mask??? Strange one that.
1. Total shitshow in relation to Special Schools and Classes over the last couple of days. But well done to all the teachers and SNAs who organised to pile on the pressure and force a change of mind from the government
1. The decision by DE to refuse to allow schools to bank hours will result in children with Additional Education Needs losing valuable teaching and learning time.
@NormaFoleyTD1
and
@josephamadigan
are being completely disingenuous when they say they prioritise children with AEN
@jenoconnell
1/ I'm very disappointed with the statement in your article that 'Anecdotally... some schools have been treating the closure as an unofficial extension of the holidays'. I'm a primary teacher in a DEIS Band 1 school. I know lots of teachers, urban & rural, large & small schools,
@Luighseach
It is not at all that simple. This is a cheap political stunt designed to deflect attention from the lack of proper planning and resourcing. Instead of saying - there's an empty room, put a special class in it, DE and NCSE need to ask What do you need to resource that class?
@josephamadigan
@Education_Ire
@joeliveline
You need to do more than redouble efforts. Double Zero is still Zero. You had several months to put a plan in place. Instead your government announced something dangerous and unworkable and pitted teachers worried about safety against parents worried for their children. Shame
The implication that school staff are at fault when an outbreak occurs is not new. I've seen it before. It is, however, quite obscene that staff who have done their level best in impossible circumstances are spoken of in such a way. HSE should withdraw the implication immediately
🤬 reading this.
Related to large outbreak in special school.
HOW DARE THEY imply risk is due to not implementing HSE guidelines
Said "guidelines" had NO understanding of special classes& schools. That was 100% the fault of
@Education_Ire
The absolute cheek of them
#edchatie
What exactly does the DES mean by they have contacted schools? They have sent an email to a school email address which they expect to be read and dealt with by a principal who is supposed to be on a very well earned few days off... A mess that they expect principals to clean up
📣URGENT: Additional PPE products recalled
⚠️We have been notified by the Dept of Education that, following review of PPE product framework, the Dept is advising schools discontinue the use of certain products
Details & list of affected products here 👇
7. Yes schools need to open but let's stop with the generalisations that children with additional needs can't access Remote Learning, many can.
Let's stop with generalisations that all parents of children with Additional Needs want their children to return to school at this time.
"Leinster House is in the grip of a Covid outbreak with at least 14 politicians, Oireachtas staff, party workers and journalists struck down by the virus in the past week".
@jenoconnell
3/Many have gone away beyond what might be expected. The digital divide, social disadvantage etc adds further stress to this awful situation. Your 'anecdotal' belief that teachers are treating school closure as a holiday negates the substantive point you are trying to make
10. where teachers were not considered close contacts if they had been wearing a mask, where it seemed as if everything possible was being done to prove an outbreak happened in the community rather than the school to fit the Schools Are Safe mantra.
'... until public health teams arrive to assess the risk..'😂😂 How do these people say this with a straight face? Principals are lucky if they get a phone call back..m Pretending to the public that there are teams assessing the risk in school is both disingenuous and dangerous
5. On top of that, 'Public Health Advice' that just keeps repeating the Schools Are Safe mantra treats workers - teachers, SNAs and ancillary staff - with contempt. Holding a webinar yesterday supposedly aimed at reassuring people and presenting 5th January figures as the most
@MalachyClerkin
Please point me to one article you have ever written about a male team where you showed such condescension, and where you picked out one player for such criticism/abuse. Misogyny dressed up as sports writing is all this is
And yet we have gobshites trying to claim that Refugees and asylum seekers are the problem!!....
RTE news : 1% of Irish population owns 27% of the wealth - Oxfam
If you ever are not sure of what is completely wrong with the type of society we live in, consider this - There is a constitutional right to own property but no right to have a property to live in.
@jenoconnell
Also, anyone who suggests that social distancing can happen in a primary classroom (even if it's possible to put desks 2 metres apart) doesn't understand the hands-on interactive nature of teaching & learning. Kids have to interact with each other, they don't sit at desks all day
3. while their peers who they normally sit beside socialise with and learn with are learning from home... There are a myriad of flaws with it.
Why haven't principals been asked to look at that plan, see what aspects work in their particular curcumstances and give feedback?
2.for loads of schools & children, will leave some children who are currently engaging really well without support, & will very much 'other' certain pupils who have always been fully integrated by telling them they now have to attend school as part of a 'Special Education bubble'
9. We need to talk about what 'safe' means rather than just repeating Schools are Safe. We need trust in the testing and tracing system, many schools had very bad experiences last term where only small numbers of children were sent home if there was an outbreak in a class,
12. Down through the years it has been teachers and SNAs and their unions who have stood shoulder to shoulder with parents' groups and advocacy groups to fight for and demand educational supports for children with additional needs....
2. The announcement yesterday could & should have been that while all schools have to close immediately because of the serious public health situation, work would begin immediately to ensure the graduated reopening of Special Schools and classes as soon as it could be done safely
1/2 Awful to see the abuse some principals are getting over mask wearing by pupils. This is the result of poor (and that's being kind!) decision making and communication by government and exploitation of people's concerns by conspiracy theorists and far right forces.
4. Why indeed wasn't this done months ago, but even at this stage it would only take a day or two and a workable plan could be finalised - if those expected to implement it were given a chance to have input.
8. Many children have complex medical needs and their parents do not want to take the risk of sending them into school in the current climate. They should have that choice..
Simply it's about having a workable plan and having trust in the Public Health situation.
And if anyone was under any misapprehension that the extent of homophobia and hate that people have to tolerate was being exaggerated, just look at some of the awful comments in this thread. It takes real bravery to stand up and confront this level of hatred
A clear message from INTO members. This deal was rejected because it did not deliver our mandate of full upward pay equalisation. All members standing together in solidarity is the hallmark of a trade union. Next step will have to be a ballot for industrial action. Bring it on..
6. up to date while showing slides about last term does not give any confidence. Especially so when teachers and SNAs will be working with pupils many of whom are not able to social distance.
5...People - teachers and parents - would be able to engage in that conversation instead of being treated like fools and having to listen to the Schools Are Safe mantra as nauseum
11. It has been a hugely stressful time for school communities, having struggled through last term with some of the biggest classes in Europe and not a chance of proper social distancing. We have the new variant, the 20 - 50 age group are most vulnerable,trust has broken down...
@daracalleary
You, & all who attended the event, believe that a different set of rules apply to you than to the rest of us. 'Number one priority is to open schools' you keep repeating but your actions completely disrespect the huge efforts being made by principals across the country to do that
@josephamadigan
@Education_Ire
@joeliveline
All teachers want schools to open safely. Why wasn't the starting point an acknowledgement that for reasons of public health it is not safe to open schools now but we all need to work together now (late and all as it is) to plan for a safe and graduated reopening
This can't be allowed to happen... what the hell is a Special Education Centre?.... No reference to how they will be staffed...Put the money into properly establishing and resourcing Special Classes and Special Schools ..
1. Some of you may have seen some hurtful and misguided posts about a member of staff in a school in our network this weekend. I don’t intend to engage with the content of those comments, as they don’t merit a response. …
@emma_okelly
Shocking contempt for school principals, staff and wider community shown by
@josephamadigan
. That is compounded by her failure to admit she got it wrong, withdraw her scurrilous claims and apologise. Her actions mean she is not fit to hold office.
Delighted to be taking on the role of CEC rep for District 14. Honoured to follow in the footsteps of really strong District 14 reps and determined to bring a voice for all teachers to the CEC table. United we will stand together and win
A welcome statement but it lacks bite... We need to tell the DE in no uncertain terms that these changes will not be accepted. It's not about consultation or a pilot, it's a straight No
The INTO condemns the lack of consultation on changes to professional development courses that will limit teacher choice, create obstacles for those juggling caring responsibilities and demonstrate a lack of trust in the profession. See:
Lots of us predicted this & asked for mitigation measures. Even when we saw it happening, decision makers kept their heads in the sand and parroted back Schools Are Safe. Now that it's admitted, please fix it - masks, contact tracing, a proper testing regime and vaccination
Prof Mary Horgan, a member of NPHET & President of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, told
@morningireland
the incidence of infection in primary school has been high over the last few months and this is probably because the group is unvaccinated and do not use masks.
The DES has no appreciation of the massive efforts made by teachers over the last two weeks to provide Remote Learning for our pupils. And certainly no concept of the digital divide that means many families have real difficulties accessing online work
INTO condemns lack of consultation on school continuity guidance. Boyle – “It is wholly unacceptable that this important document should have been published without any consultation with the union representing primary school teachers & principals...
Everyone agrees to vaccinate Over 70s and the medically vulnerable first. But then Vaccinate Frontline Workers, including Education Staff, before those working from home. Keep schools open by keeping pupils, education staff and their families safe.
#VaccinateEducationStaff
From 'What crisis' a couple of days ago to meeting with Colleges to explore the sensible idea of finding a way to allow students to temporarily help with the subbing crisis... Well done to everyone who highlighted the problem this week.. Now just get on with it
@NormaFoleyTD1
@Alan__Shatter
How many Palestinians were killed this year before 7th October? How many last year? The year before? The year before that?
You want to pretend that 7th October was the start of something? Yes what happened then was horrific but it was a consequence of decades of oppression
Clearly one rule for them and one for the rest of us. Adjourning the Dáil because one minister sent for test way over the top but serious double standards!! Everwhere else - meat plants, schools or wherever - only 'close contacts' sent home and that after positive test
@AislingAontu

1. Where’s the Testing?
As schools prepare to re-open, teachers & pupils need urgent access to testing in the event of someone developing symptoms (& for asymptomatic teachers who may have been in contact with someone with the virus).
@ST__Ireland
Why do you have to couch it as 'gender wars'. There are no wars, mostly there are human individuals striving to support, respect protect each. Respecting difference is not a 'war'
3. Families would feel cared for and supported..
Instead many of them tonight feel abandoned, And the blame will be put on teachers who have been put through a couple of days of unnecessary hell.
@jenoconnell
1/ You posted an opinion piece. Some people agreed with you, some disagreed. Disagreement does not equal 'vitriol'. People see things from lots of perspectives. Teachers who have spent the last few weeks doing their best to provide Remote Learning for their pupils/students..
@jenoconnell
2/ and checking in to make sure they and their families were OK, while at the same time looking after their own kids or worrying about their parents may have felt that you 'anecdotal' reference to them thinking they were on holidays was 'vitriol'.
So Israeli tech companies and the Israeli government have employed Boycott as a tactic....a tactic they want made illegal if used in favour of Palestinians
Full Solidarity to all
@dublinbusnews
Workers.. That a 'deal' recommended by both unions is rejected by 97% of the workers they represent raises some very serious questions about the quality of that representation.
These workers deserve the full support of all.
4 If they were honest and said that there is an obvious public health risk in opening schools and an obvious social health risk for many children and young people in closing them and what we are trying to do is balance those two risks..
Anyone who thinks National Party is 'just another political party' look at this picture of its leader heading in to the count. What does it remind you of? His miserable few votes showed what people thought of him but these people cannot be allowed to gain a foothold.
@josephamadigan
@Education_Ire
@joeliveline
Why won't you acknowledge that there is an obvious public health risk in opening schools and an obvious social health risk for many children and young people in closing them and what we have to do is balance those two risks? Stop just repeating the Schools Are Safe mantra.
Principals/teachers very seldom want to put pupils on short days but are often left with no option due to lack of training and understaffing.
In some instances a shortened day facilitates a pupil to reintegrate if they are having difficulties. It can't simply be 'blame the school
@jenoconnell
@olddiesel
@McHughJoeTD
Genuine question Jennifer. Have you come across one single teacher who does not want to be in the classroom with her/his pupils? Wanting it and making it happen safely are two different things. Safety - the safety of children their families and teachers and other adults who...
@RichardbrutonTD
Unless pay is equalised, and steps are taken to end casualisation at second level and to establish substitute supply panels at primary level, they will be training to work abroad. Virtually impossible for young teachers to afford Dublin rents
When cops were battering Finbar Cafferkey & his fellow Shell to Sea campaigners in Mayo, Micheál Martin was not describing him as a man of principle! And no, Russian embassy, he did not rely on the Irish government and media for his analysis of the wrongs of imperialist power!
@greenparty_ie
@LeCheileDND
The protest is against the government. You have failed asylum seekers & refugees & have created the conditions being exploited by the far right to cause division. Failed to deliver public housing or end direct provision. You are going to turn up to protest against yourselves?
@AnahitaTchr
There are so many people ready to exploit the ethnicity of the accused to spread further hate. Many of the same people have contributed to the homophobic hate that so many LGBTI people suffer on a daily basis. Really sorry that you would have that hate directed at you
Either
@NormaFoleyTD1
is incompetent & doesn't actually know the day to day reality in schools or she is straight up lying. Everyone agrees SETs should not be redeployed to cover for teacher absences BUT there is a huge shortage of subs & the Minister's bluster can't change that
“This issue has not been flagged” - If schools are still having trouble sourcing substitute teachers, they haven’t told the Department of Education.

3/3 Principals aren't seeking ways to exclude children from school. The opposite is the case. Anyone with worries and concerns just has to go and talk to the principal. It's still the same person who was looking out for your kid last week and will be doing so next week and month
I've just realised the statement came from
@Education_Ire
. That makes it even worse.
@NormaFoleyTD1
- Have this besmirching of the school staff's reputation withdrawn immediately
An absolute privilege to second today's motion on Palestine and so proud of our union for standing in solidarity with the Palestinian victims of Israeli genocide... 1/2

1. Just one of the flaws/gaps in the plans for Return To School - What happens if a parent cannot send their child to school because of having symptoms?
A disgraceful insult to school secretaries

. School communities will not accept it and will give full backing to Secretaries in whatever action they are forced to take to ensure that they are treated properly.

2. the alleged victims to see such a show of solidarity against them and for their alleged abuser.
To think that people who were already in such vulnerable circumstances were allegedly abused is horrific. To see much of the political left effectively closing ranks around
