Signet ring / Siegelring with menorah & ertrog from the 4th C the latest, from a Roman settlement near Basel. Unlike coins, such rings suggest Jewish possession and thus Jewish existence north of the Alps. As in Cologne, there are clues that Jews were there already in the 2nd C.

As of this year I am a 30-year survivor of a school shooting. I now teach university students in TX. I still scope out every classroom for tactical escape in the case of gunfire because I know it’s not unlikely. I am not unique in the US.

In 1880, Jews were 9% of Vienna's population. The largest amount in history. But 75% of them lived the 1st, 2nd, and 9th districts. They comprised 33%-50% of the population in the 2nd, but 20% of the 9th and the 1st. Jews lived in the 9th and the 2nd independent of their class.

Today I saw a Torah scroll once used by a community of Jewish luggage porters of the Kaiser Ferdinand Nordbahn, a rail line that connected Vienna to Krakow, Prag, Galicia, Hamburg. Before the war, there were 440 such small synagogues and community prayer groups in Vienna.

Really relieved to hear of friends from Vienna driving to the border to pick up Ukrainians fleeing for safety and others who are paying for gas and logistics. Vienna is a soft place to land for Ukrainian refugees and - one hopes - the Bundeskanzler does the right thing this time

So when Vienna, Steiermark, Kärnten, etc. kicked out their Jews in the Middle Ages, they landed in Burgenland. There, the Jews founded a network of 7 orthodox towns called the Sheva Kehillot or Siebengemeinden. For 500 (!!) years.

It’s shabbat- the one holy day of rest- so Viennese Jews travel by foot up to three times a day to shul and back. Families walk to visit family and friends for meals. Parents and children go on walks to pass the time and relax. But now, it is too dangerous to go outside #w2003

Österreich 2021. Jüdische Menschen müssen vor dem Verlassen ihrer Wohnungen gewarnt werden, weil in Wien wieder Rechtsextreme durch die Straßen ziehen. Auch Polizei empfiehlt, zuhause zu bleiben und tut ansonsten nichts. Polizeichef und Innenminister sitzen weiter fest im Sattel.

I am not superstitious but when I was at the Jewish Museum Berlin for a grief visit, my blouse caught on the WC door and tore vertically on the left side over the heart, as the sound hilariously resonated in the empty foyer. @mtwirth reminding me of k’riah, the rending of clothes

The suitcase Musil took when he had to flee Vienna in 1938 with his Jewish wife to Zurich and later to Geneva. After he had already fled Berlin in 1933 for the same reasons.

Met someone in Texas last night from Münster whose father spoke Masematte, the Hebrew, Yiddish, & Romani influenced language of horse & cattle traders in the city. Their word for a male stranger (Seeger) comes from “ze goy”. German integration into Jewish networks is fascinating
