What's old is new again: left is 2023 and the right, 1901. A political campaign to create panic over refugee Jews coming to Vienna under the antisemitic mayor, Karl Lueger.
@SamaraKlar
I was once told by someone who hired me that they almost didn’t hire me because I spoke too much during the interview. I did learn to shut up the next time I was on the job market and let the tenured faculty shine. Acad hiring is a very narcissistic enterprise
Academics starting preparations for Purim: consider donating your old groggers to academic organizations for use at conferences when someone in the audience says, "This is really more of a comment than a question, but...."

Please do not come to Texas if you are actively trying to reproduce. It’s a gamble with your life. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, prepare for an invasion of your privacy.
This guy with the red beard walking slowly to shul for Friday prayers and saying, “Frohe Weihnachten” to everyone he passes, as if he were the mayor of Leopoldstadt.

Alabama bill direct compares abortion to holocaust. : “It is estimated that 6,000,000 Jewish people 23 were murdered in German concentration camps during WW II; 3,000,000 people were executed by Joseph Stalin's regime..” and so on. We need organized, peaceful, political rage.

Start an affair w/ the aging dept head in a stale marriage then replace his wife and kids by becoming his new wife and kids. Spousal hire yourself into a job but make sure the dept head has a few years left to use his influence so you get tenure. Wait, that’s not a wrong answer
You can watch hours of Andy Warhol documentaries and never learn he was a native Ruthenian speaker who, despite being born in the US, spoke Ruthenian at home his entire life. And until college in a Ruthenian community. When asked where he came from he always said “Nowhere”

I have chatted with a few uninsured people with pre-existing illnesses who were hesitant because they worried about side effects of the vaccine exacerbating their illnesses. One guy with myocarditis. Can’t afford to consult a doctor before or after the shot. US fails its people.
Oh my, the baseball bat prop of the Bear Jew from *that* film - you know the one - is in the permanent collection of the Jewish Museum Vienna. Like some magic wand.
My friend shuttling people fleeing Ukr to Vienna last week was just one guy and one car. One week later the org is so big he is with a team at many border points bringing goods and returning people. Today at Sighetu Marmației crossing there’s a need for antibiotics and baby goods

I would speak to the department head if they are an ally. It may seem small but it’s actually aggressive behavior that shouldn’t have happened no matter how senior this person

The Emperor’s New Clothes is called a fairy tale. Why? If it’s children’s lit then it’s bad children’s lit. If, like Animal Farm, it’s for adults, am I an adult? Scholarly answers range from smug STEM takes to superfluous memology. I don’t get it. Will Gregor Samsa ever wake up?
A student once asked me the difference between wieso and warum and I told her I would get back to her but then I avoided her in the hallway until the end of the semester

The slickest of burns when my professor told a rabbi in our grad seminar that it was “refreshing” to have someone who works in “praxis” be with us
Signet ring / Siegelring with menorah & ertrog from the 4th C the latest, from a Roman settlement near Basel. Unlike coins, such rings suggest Jewish possession and thus Jewish existence north of the Alps. As in Cologne, there are clues that Jews were there already in the 2nd C.

As of this year I am a 30-year survivor of a school shooting. I now teach university students in TX. I still scope out every classroom for tactical escape in the case of gunfire because I know it’s not unlikely. I am not unique in the US.
Ach, Marian,

Saturday afternoon is exactly when visibly Jewish Viennese families go to Augarten near the end of shabbat. Others walk around the park to get to shul. It‘s targeted harassment yet again.

Student asked me why Hochzeit (Ehe) is with a short o but Hochzeit (heyday) is with the long o and honestly I never thought about that before and it’s also too early in the semester to admit to the essential chaos of German
So strange this site at Rummelsburg, once a GDR prison but also the site of the Holocaust Aktion T4 euthanasia murders. Strange as a new condo complex has been built here.

It’s the absolute wrong time for
@youngstownstate
to dismantle their Jewish Studies program in this climate of rising antisemitism. Students and scholars there deserve to have the resources and knowledge to combat it. They will lose that with this short-sighted plan
In 1880, Jews were 9% of Vienna's population. The largest amount in history. But 75% of them lived the 1st, 2nd, and 9th districts. They comprised 33%-50% of the population in the 2nd, but 20% of the 9th and the 1st. Jews lived in the 9th and the 2nd independent of their class.

Follow someone for 10 years online, meet in person for the first time in a pandemic at a cafe, and learn the entire story of the Yiddish left during Red Vienna up to the post-Shoah era in one sitting.
The Internet has been very good to me.
Today I saw a Torah scroll once used by a community of Jewish luggage porters of the Kaiser Ferdinand Nordbahn, a rail line that connected Vienna to Krakow, Prag, Galicia, Hamburg.
Before the war, there were 440 such small synagogues and community prayer groups in Vienna.
Really relieved to hear of friends from Vienna driving to the border to pick up Ukrainians fleeing for safety and others who are paying for gas and logistics. Vienna is a soft place to land for Ukrainian refugees and - one hopes - the Bundeskanzler does the right thing this time

I did read it and was shocked to discover the article uses convicted Holocaust-denier David Irving as its source material. He was banned from entering Poland recently.
TL; DR (but do, because it’s thorough & fascinating): ADL casts itself as civil rights org but has a long history of targeting the left in defense of state power, in particular Black, Muslim and Arab leaders and movements. By

I remember at my first faculty meeting at my first acad job after my PhD, a colleague in my European area studies program started off the meeting by saying: “now that I have tenure, I want you all to know that I will only be publishing my poetry and DIY guides on home renovation”
So when Vienna, Steiermark, Kärnten, etc. kicked out their Jews in the Middle Ages, they landed in Burgenland. There, the Jews founded a network of 7 orthodox towns called the Sheva Kehillot or Siebengemeinden. For 500 (!!) years.
After hours of adrenaline and dread following the news, I learned someone who was very generous to me and instrumental in helping establish a Jewish Studies program at my university has suffered terrible losses today in Israel.
May all who have been affected know no more sorrow
It’s shabbat- the one holy day of rest- so Viennese Jews travel by foot up to three times a day to shul and back. Families walk to visit family and friends for meals. Parents and children go on walks to pass the time and relax. But now, it is too dangerous to go outside

I worked to get old age pensions from Germany for the FSU Jews in the US in the late 1990s and I could sing a whole ballad about how Germany did *everything it could* to screw them out of their money after claiming they set aside funds to support these people .
I am not superstitious but when I was at the Jewish Museum Berlin for a grief visit, my blouse caught on the WC door and tore vertically on the left side over the heart, as the sound hilariously resonated in the empty foyer.

My PhD in German Studies has prepared me uniquely to wait 2 hrs on hold with the Internal Revenue Service to be told I need to submit a form in order to submit another form so that I may call another day and wait again for 2 hrs on hold for the Internal Revenue Service.
Met someone in Texas last night from Münster whose father spoke Masematte, the Hebrew, Yiddish, & Romani influenced language of horse & cattle traders in the city. Their word for a male stranger (Seeger) comes from “ze goy”. German integration into Jewish networks is fascinating

About 95% of my personal library comes from books I picked up as a grad student at UChicago when I was shocked to see an office door with a pile of books and a sign, “Take them. Professor won the lottery”

November 6, we will have a launch event and in the coming spring semester of 2024, we have our first courses.

put out a press release on Holocaust Remembrance Day about the importance of standing up to contemporary forms of anti-Semitism. It features an interview with me. On days like this, I am so glad to be part of this dedicated university.
I just learned today that the cards and letters from East Germans sent to Angela Davis as part of the Roses for Angela campaign are housed at my university.
Been working here quite a while so I feel like a Trottel that I am learning this only today
