one of the ways they've adjusted to make the game easier in 3D is by using positional hit detection based on the camera angle—in essence, even if the attack doesn't truly collide, if it looks to the player like it hit, then it'll hit

I don't know who needs to hear this but Volume settings in game engines (like Unity) tend to be Logarithmic. If your volume slider does nothing until the bottom 10%? That's why. I'm literally begging you to get this right. Maybe 1 in 10 indie games gets it right.
