June 30 was my last day at ESPN. I'm indebted to every editor, producer, director, crew member, researcher, and colleague during that 25 1/2-year run. Grateful to all those who let us parachute into their lives and trust us with their stories. No Plan B yet. For now, just thanks.
Andrew Luck, who has left bits and pieces of himself on football fields, who has conducted himself during his career with honor and integrity, who explained his reasons for retirement openly and honestly...is somehow getting criticized by some for those reasons?
Astounding.
Tennessee is a work in progress--and so is Pruitt. But if you measure a program's progress by the way it plays, then the Vols are trending the right direction when it comes to competing. Realistic UT followers recognize the difference between early-season effort and now.
TAMU, Michigan, OU, Boise, Ole Popcorn, ND, Iowa, Wake, UMass…yeah, nothing against the NFL, but I’ll take a college football Saturday over any other day of the week.
I know Florida was short-handed. I know Mullen might have been limiting Trask's reps. I know the `they're not SEC good' comment didn't age well. But
@OU_Football
, even before boat racing of UF, was tracking toward one-of-four-best teams. Still, a great recovery this season.
For all the verbal shots Tennessee fans have taken in the last couple of years (some deserved), nobody can question the support they’ve shown for the child who was bullied. Those are the Vols fans I know and admire. Well done by all those who bought shirts.
So proud of VOL nation today. More than 16,000 t-shirts ordered by 3 pm today, crashing the website which is back up. Giant shout-out to
@UTVolShop
who ignited this story. On every major network today showing what it means to be a VOL and step forward and act!

Had an uncle who was in the Army Corps of Engineers. Fourth wave. Would never talk about that day, no matter how many times I asked as a teenager. Decades later, a letter arrived. Nine pages. He wrote about the day of days. Incomprehensible courage by those men...
Met a wonderful guy at the AN driving range yesterday: Shane Caldwell, who is battling Stage 4 lung cancer. He's a huge Tiger Woods fan--so it was lovely to see Woods stop by and give him signed glove, which read, ``Stay Strong!'' Nice gesture to a guy fighting hard.
With a few exceptions, I've been fortunate to cover almost every major sporting event during my career. But here at the Special Olympics World Games, I'm awestruck by joy of the athletes, by their sportsmanship, by the purity of their efforts. I find myself smiling all the time.
Got lots of respect for this kid. Have been in locker rooms and clubhouses where veteran players have sneaked out, done the `no comment' thing, or hidden in training room. Williams, a rookie, stood tall, answered the questions, made no excuses. That's class.
It’s easy to send an anonymous text. It’s what cowards do.
@MariaTaylor
voiced her opinion in the the light of day, and did so with conviction. I’ve seen her work as a mentor, and as someone devoted to help others. I stand with my friend and colleague.
I don’t know how you got my number...but I don’t care how much you guys harass me, I will still use my voice passionately and decisively right now, so that others can be heard later.
Not only was
@caseyob14
at practice Tuesday, said P.J. Fleck, but he was firing up the Gophers with his work ethic and attitude. Wednesday he goes in for surgery. Casey is a 1,000 kinds of tough.
ACT OF KINDNESS: A high school student is being commended for an extraordinary act of sportsmanship, going to the mat in a wrestling match against a younger opponent with a physical disability.
During WWII, my dad was a navigator. Two of his brothers landed on beaches on D-Day, one of them in the 4th wave. I asked that uncle what it was like. He would never answer. Decades later, out of the blue, he sent me handwritten 8-page letter describing that day. Re-reading today
This lady was celebrating her birthday — by herself — until she was joined by other patrons and staff once they realize she's celebrating all alone.
Humanity. Break out the tissues…
Here's how I look at
@notthefakeSVP
's show: he's the really cool guy who sits next to you at the sports bar, listens to your POV, then respectfully offers his perspective in a smart, irreverent, reasoned way. Happy birthday to the show, SVP.
Three years ago, I headed into work to start a new show. As we begin year four, my sincere thanks for staying up late with us and allowing us to keep you company. We are grateful every day.

So grateful to LeeAnne Schlarman,
@UKFootball
, producer
@Thebudman23
and editor Jason Morris. Schlarman was the kind of coach his players would run through two walls for...
Putting out the flag today, remembering Lt. Col. Chet Wojciechowski and Lt. Vera Wojciechowski. Dad was at end of WWII, also served in Korea and Vietnam. Mom served in Japan as a nurse at the conclusion of WWII. Heartfelt thanks to all who serve.
Appreciate those who have reached out--very kind of everyone. For the record, ESPN did right by me during my entire career. No hard feelings. It was an honor to work there.
Those who have covered Bob at OU over the years know exactly what that program means to him. His sense of loyalty and family was one of the key themes of Bob's memoir, ``No Excuses.'' He had chances to leave OU, but always stayed true to his convictions.
Absolutely. Laughable that others make declarations on what someone else should do when it comes to ``shutting it down'' and ``getting paid.'' The kid wants to play. Let him live his age.
Love hearing Zion say "For those people that thought I shouldn't come back and play they're entitled to their opinion but these are my brothers and I love Duke."
Like every other working stiff taking a private jet to his new gig...
He’s not getting ripped for leaving after one year. He’s getting ripped for hypocrisy of transfer portal comments and “committed” tweets. U want to leave? Fine. Just spare us the culture lectures.
Everyone ripping Mel Tucker for leaving after 1 year. So what’s acceptable time to move on: 2, 5, 10 years? Wait to get fired? Coaches are like every other working stiff (although compensated much, much better): get most $$ you can in best job situation you can find
After
@Vol_Football
win vs. Auburn, thought back to conversation I had with a UT coach shortly before spring game. The coach said there was lots of work to be done, but that the team would play hard and before it was over, they'd win a game or two nobody thought they could win.
A year after MJ retired, I played against him in a pickup game in Vegas. We were thisclose to winning, when he suddenly got interested and took over the game. A dumas on my team says to me, ` You gonna guard that guy or what?' He was serious. I said, `It's Michael F-in Jordan!'
If you have about 13 minutes Sunday (the 10 a.m.

and a humanitarian mission in the Mediterranean that became an international incident. Here's story w/a TV preview:
Looking forward to
@CollegeGameDay
and CFB on Jan. 1, of course. But would like to acknowledge friend and colleague Tom Rinaldi, who is known for violins, but we know better: he plays ALL the instruments in a TV orchestra. Simply the best. Go crush it today/tonight, pal!
Hope you'll consider watching
@CollegeGameDay
this morning, as we try to honor the legacy of the man
@UKFootball
called, ``The Great American''--assistant coach John Schlarman.
With all due respect to FBS HC, it's not the four best-personnel teams in the playoffs. Ohio State has top-4 personnel...and it got waxed by Purdue. ND played a tough sched, and had it lost a game, it likely wdn't hv reached playoff. But it didn't lose...and OSU+ UGA (twice) did.
Text from an FBS head coach: "When will the (CFP) committee actually watch personnel? Notre Dame doesn't have players anywere close to the three other teams or Georgia. Like watching a NFL team play a college team."
To all the hundreds...thousands of law enforcement personnel who worked tirelessly to find the person responsible for those bombs...thank you. We almost certainly don't say that enough.
Here at O’Hare. TSA lines unusually long, but what TSA officials are here, they’re doing their very best. Appreciative of their efforts under difficult circumstances. Tried to say thanks at every checkpoint.
This is such a galatically uninformed and lazy take. There isn't one person who covers CFB in a responsible, serious way who `roots' against a season. If the season is moved or canceled, it will be because the decision makers made what they thought was best for all involved.
Know a lot of college football writers have been accused of rooting against the season. I don’t think that’s necessarily the case but some absolutely want to be able to say “I told you so” because they’ve been peddling only the absolute worst headlines
Sadly might cost the season
Loved the little smirk he gave when asked about people casually discounting OU's chances against LSU. I understand all the reasons why LSU is a double-digit favorite, but also understand the power of motivation. No idea how it will turn out, but this has been a resilient OU team.
The left arm cast that Archie played in at Ole Miss. Loved spending time today at The Manning Room today during our visit with
@Lane_Kiffin
and
@corral_matt
and the legendary Ken Crain. Appreciated their time. Look for the piece on
@CollegeGameDay
this Saturday.
Journalism, as practiced in Seattle and all around the country during this difficult time, is not fake, is not a hoax, is not an enemy. It is a conduit to the truth, and a lifeline for those in need of information and reporting.
Was 23-y/o nobody FtLaud News reporter covering HS sports. Request interview w/the great Bowden for recruiting story--he'll never do it. Hours later, phone rings. It's him! I fumble nervously through questions. He calms me down. Answers every one. I always remember that kindness.
Talked to the legendary Hayden Fry a few days ago. I loved what he said about brow-beating screamers: ``I coached for 47 years in high school, the Marine Corps and college. To my knowledge I never had a player make a mistake on purpose.''
Exactly.
My uncle, Alex Wojciechowski, was in the 4th wave at Normandy. For years I asked him what it was like, but he declined. Decades later, a handwritten letter arrived. His memories spilled out onto those 9 pages. The valor+sacrifices made on that day of days is beyond comprehension.
Andy Rooney landed on the beach of Normandy days after D-Day, 80 years ago today. In 2004, he shared a firsthand account of “a day unlike any other.”
“It’s hard for anyone who has been in a war to describe the terror of it to anyone who hasn’t,” he said. .
Fact 1: the two best teams in the country will play for the national championship. This is bad why? Fact 2: The best college coach (ever?) will be on one sideline facing a guy who has built an empire at Clemson. This is bad why?
The folks at
@VT_Football
are the best. Love that place. Thanks to Coach Fuente and Coach Beamer for their time and considerable help. And thanks to Hank too!
If Harry Caray, or Vin Scully, or Harry Kalas, or Larry Munson, etc., were the sports voices of your youth, well, that's what John Ward was to Vols fans. A gentleman's gentleman and one of the great college game broadcasters of all time.
Just 10 years ago a presidential nominee could acknowledge and praise his opponent's better angels. McCain didn't reduce politics to juvenile name-calling, to pettiness, to half-truths, mistruths and no truths. He had dignity, gravitas and a true love of country.
Sen. John McCain on Sen.
@BarackObama
at 2008 Al Smith Dinner: "Political opponents can have a little trouble seeing the best in each other. But I have had a few glimpses of this man at his best. And I admire his great skill, energy, and determination."
My brother, who had never entered the Masters lottery until this year, just found out he won two tickets to Sunday's round. I told him to immediately go buy PowerBall tickets...
A few things to remember for those Tennessee fans who might feel annoyed by Barnes' honesty: 1) He stayed, regardless of the reasons. 2) It's a good thing other schools want your coach. 3) He's been transparent and honest. 4) It was UCLA. 5) He stayed.
Would like to thank the Lowe and Jordan families for their time and trust, as well as
@Utah_Football
for all of its considerable help. Thanks to
@KoachMak
, too, and producer Jen Chafitz, editor Jason Morris, and
@BenWebber23
.
Aaron Lowe and Ty Jordan were best friends, high school teammates and teammates at the University of Utah.
Two tragedies ended their lives nine months to the day of each other, but not their bond.
For the first time in program history,
@Utah_Football
is retiring a jersey number. No. 22--previously worn by Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe--will be retired in a ceremony between the 1st and 2nd Qs of tonight's game vs. UCLA. Both families will be in attendance.
Later, when ordering a sparkling water, he looked into the flight attendant’s soul and simply asked, “Why?” Violin music played over the intercom system...
Tom Rinaldi, boarding a flight this morning, greeted the flight attendant with, “Good morning! What are your hopes and dreams?” She began weeping uncontrollably. Flight delayed.
Just wanted to thank all the coaches, players, staff members, SIDs, ADs, parents and friends who were kind enough to give their time for our
@CollegeGameDay
features and interviews this season. The time and candor is never taken for granted or unappreciated.
If I wanted to see pinstripes, I'd go to an actual Yankees game. I appreciate the effort, but those unis and Notre Dame go together like barbecue sauce on a Communion wafer.
For sportswriters, this is a flag-flies-at-half mast day. In heaven, I assume Dan Jenkins is drawing hard on a cigarette, drinking an adult beverage and cracking wise with Sherrod, Pope, Murray, and Shrake. Maybe he'll let Hogan join in. His Ownself was the best of the best.
Always amuses me when people ask, “Is PJ Fleck for real.” As if it were some sort of act. You can’t do what he’s done at two different programs by faking sincerity and compassion. He and
@caseyob14
have a bond that will last forever. Thrilled for both of them.
Today marks the 3-year anniversary of Chad Carr’s death from DIPG. Tammi and Jason Carr said they didn’t want his death to be in vain. It hasn’t. Research donations and awareness have spiked. So many worthy causes; this is one of them.
@chadtough
Was at UGA football facility this past Saturday as Smart and coaches hosted recruits. It was an impressive coordinated display of hospitality, salesmanship, video ingenuity, and drop-ins (by selected UGA star players). Smart was laser focused on those recruits.
7:07 a.m...Guy next to me unleashes the hounds as soon as he boards. Gonna be one of those travel days. Could really use one of

Manly Williams extra effort to secure the win for Hawaii in the last play of the game?!?
Never know if you’re effort will be THE DIFFERENCE. 40 yards downfield he makes the last!
GREAT JOB Manly for not giving up!
After Yr. 3, Duke boosters wanted K fired. In 4th season, Butters gave K a new 5-year deal. K cried in Butters' office. `Tom, you don't have to do this,' said K. Said Butters: `Coach, on the contrary, I not only need to do it, I need to do it right now.' The rest is history.
Well, look what arrived in the mail today... Proud to have been part of
@CoachBobStoops
book project. Love his honesty, storytelling and football chops. Official release date is Sept 10. (Bobblehead not included.)
In my town of Wheaton, Il., Memorial Park decorated with rows of American flags for Veterans Day. Few nights ago, bagpiper played ‘Amazing Grace’ near dusk. Thought of all vets’ service, including my folks: USAF Lt. Col. Chet Wojciechowski and Lt. Vera Wojciechowski.
This is like saying, ``Hey WSU students who enjoy baked goods: I'm thinking about bringing an endless supply of pies, cakes and cookies to a classroom next semester. All you can eat once a week for about 6 weeks. Would this be of interest to those with a sweet tooth?
Hey WSU students, I’m thinking about teaching an evening seminar class next semester w my friend Senator Baumgartner. “Leadership Lessons in Insurgent Warfare & Football Strategy.” Would meet once a week for about 6 weeks. Would this be of interest?
I'm not interested in playing baiting games. I'm saying that responsible CFB journalists are reporting the news, not rooting for it. Are ADs/conf. comm. influenced by the reporting? Yes--the reporting. If they're influenced by opinion, they're not serving their constituency.
@GenoEspn
Alright Woj I’ll take the bait...and clearly by referencing “some” it’s like I’ve awakened the army of CFB writers. This should be a nuanced conversation sadly this medium does not afford. Lots of layers but you don’t think the decision makers pay attention to media opinion?
To all those who wonder why we write and talk about Tiger
@TigerWoods
so much...that's why. Life is a three-act play, and in many ways, Woods' third act is as compelling as the previous two. Rise...Fall...The long journey back...
I don't know a damn thing about NASCAR. But I know I'm rooting for Bubba Wallace every time he climbs into a race car, every time he steps in front of a microphone, every time his strength of character overpowers the weakness and cowardice of racism.
The best of the best. Humble. Kind. Instinctive. Understated.
@notthefakeSVP
said it so well earlier in the week: Verne elevates every event broadcast, even the Masters...In your life, you'll never hear someone better.
Verne Lundquist's 40th and final Masters has been filled with emotion.
His connection to some of the most iconic moments at Augusta National is a legacy that will live on for many years to come.
There’s a reason why

feature on Justin, which airs Sunday morning, again Sun. night. Remarkable player and young man.
As good of a friend as you could ever have, as good of a journalist as you'll ever know. Proud to be his colleague through the years, prouder that he calls me a friend.
I came to work at ESPN 18 years ago today, on Nov. 5, 2002, as the first college football writer at . On the day that my employment became an adult, ESPN informed me that upon expiration of my contract on Jan. 31, I will no longer be working here. 1/
In the age of scholarship offers to 6th-grade football prospects, it's nice to see a 4th-grader get an offer that really matters. Well done,
@univtennessee
I’ve never bought argument that EVERYONE cheats, but after recent trial—and telling silence of certain schools and conferences—I can understand exasperation of non-cheaters. NCAA incapable of enforcing own rules. Cheating met with shrugs.
Beilein's departure for the NBA strikes me as a partial commentary on the state of NCAA basketball: players leaving too soon for the NBA, and rampant cheating nationwide (see FBI probe, and the NCAA's non-reaction), probably have made the job less appealing to a guy like Beilein
Honored to be asked. Thrilled to join a terrific faculty and staff. Looking forward to working with those students and returning to a campus that has great meaning to me.
It wasn't a dunk gone wrong. It was an absolute horrifying cheap shot by a kid who had better hope his grotesque actions didn't injure the other player.
So cool. Thrilled for
@caseyob14
, and absolutely loved the moment between him and
@Coach_Fleck
. P.J. has been a believer in Casey from Day One. Spend time with Casey, and you understand why it isn’t a leap of faith. Congrats.
Just saw a dozen or so Special Olympics athletes here in Orlando airport, beginning the journey to Abu Dhabi for World Games next week. Wished them luck. Can’t wait to see them in competition. They looked sharp in those red, white and blue USA sweatsuits.
Many thanks to all the folks who have made
@KirkHerbstreit
's memoir, `Out of the Pocket,' a success. Proud to be a small part of the project and appreciative of all the people who hv bought the book and passed along kind words. Thanks also to colleagues/friends for their support.
It isn't the signature that matters. Ink fades, but that moment won't. A simple act of kindness that took, what, 30 seconds, but will last a lifetime...
