Thanks for posting, Paul - even though that photo’s from my second (2 month long) appearance on the Street in 83. Here’s that one off cameo from 79. BTW - Helen Worth was fantastic to work with - both times!
Helen Worth is leaving Coronation Street. My favourite Gail storyline was when she dated Jilted John in 1979, six months after his girlfriend Julie left him for Gordon.
I’ve been digitising old VHS videos, and unearthing some great stuff. But I didn’t expect to come across this classic from 1978. Previously unseen and now up on YouTube!
Continuing my long tradition of recording radio shows in daft places, I’ve just begun recording The Shuttleworths’ Christmas Special in a walk-in wardrobe in Leicester!
The continued lockdown in Leicester is allowing my hair to assume the style of an 80’s pop star. I’m aiming for Limahl but currently it’s closer to Bobby from Bucks Fizz. Or do I mean the other one?
At opening for Martin Parr’s exhibition ‘Only Human’ at National Portrait Gallery. Pleased to see Mike Leigh looking down on Mr Shuttleworth as he checks the level in 1997.

- I last saw Robin when he won Celebrity Pointless, and I came last!
I’ve left the rain and grey skies of mainland UK behind (and this miserable election!) to come to my Orkney church. Unbelievably bright in the moonlight, with the Plough twinkling away up on the right. Heaven..
Very sad news - my friend Chris Phipps died yesterday. He was funny, kind, unbelievably driven, and the most knowledgeable rock musicologist in the land. Why, he knew even more than my character Brian Appleton whom - with his blessing - was based entirely on Chris. RIP, mate..
I’m up in Orkney and a strange lady tourist has decided to pull into my drive and brew up. I don’t mind as we don’t get many visitors up here. But I am keen to avoid an Alan Bennettesque ‘Lady in a Van’ relationship!
Just been on a bike ride through Leicester. It’s so good for cycling in, walking in, eating in - and living in. The people are cool and its diversity is a breath of fresh air. I love it - even during an extended lockdown!

42 years ago today, the Hacienda Nightclub opened. Here’s some never-before-seen footage of inside the iconic club in its early days, filmed one Friday night in late 1983.
Today - I hope looking more like Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones than Geoffrey from Rainbow - I found a very old guitar: the one I wrote most of True Love Stories on in 78. Kenny the dog doesn’t seem overly impressed..
Boris Johnson is a.. Schedule Shifter! The extended 6 o clock news on Radio 4 means that part 1 of ‘Excuse Me, Are You John Shuttleworth?’ has been moved to Christmas Day at 6.15pm. Part 2 will now air on Monday the 28th at 6.15. Slightly annoying..
Remember my live tour ‘Completely Out of Character’? It’s been condensed into 2x15 minute shows and airs on Radio 4 tomorrow (Christmas Eve) and Christmas Day at 6.15PM. Join me and my trusty harmonium, and even if you don’t - have a good one! X
When Corrie was Cool
Here’s my debut on Britain’s longest running soap - in the days when it looked like it was directed by Ken Loach. Well, this scene does. Helen Worth as Gail looks rather foxy. I don’t - so no wonder she turns me down!
Exciting news! I’ve launched my own YouTube channel for - amongst other things -uploads of my vintage material. Here’s the first - not seen by anyone since 1981.
Shocked and saddened to learn we no longer have Karl Wallinger with us.
I had admired his work from afar but it was when we did a Real World Recording Week together that I had the most creative and fun week I have ever had in the studio. Karl was overflowing with wonderful
Me and John Otway relax after interviewing each other for Record Collector magazine. John’s the special guest on the Jilted John 40th Anniversary tour in October ‘Ere We Go 2 3 40!’

Guess who came and said hello after last night’s gig - it’s the chap who nearly fell off the cliff into the Devil’s Arse! Glad to see you’re fit and well, David. Rescheduled date TBA soon!
Sealing a deal with cult TV personality and songstress Lorraine Bowen over a pint in a Louth hostelry. Lorraine’s amazing song ‘Take Time’ is in my forthcoming movie, ‘Father Earth’. Cheers Lorraine!

- Virtuoso demonstration of how to talk for an hour and a half (engagingly) without drawing breath or even having a sip of anything. When he interviewed me at Rebellion in 2018 this was me: “Erm, well, slurp.. erm, I dunno..”
Look at them all rocking up at the beautiful Art Deco Chorley Theatre. Have they come to see the latest Tom Cruise blockbuster? No - it’s that fabulous new documentary, Father Earth!
Just discovered my episode of Heartbeat is on ITV3 at 7 PM today! Some claim my brief appearance hastened the series’ demise after 17 long series; others that I give the finest display of ‘drunken acting’ ever seen on TV!
It was a delight to spend 2 days in Montrose at the inaugural

Brian Appleton
@Appleton_Brian
made a rare appearance in Newcastle last Friday to pay homage to the mighty Chris Phipps who the character was based on, and who sadly passed away last year. It was a memorable night raising over £2K for the British Heart Foundation.
After coming to the Edinburgh Fringe since 1992 I finally got round to climbing Arthur’s Seat. As Dave Tordoff would have said - “I’ve done it. It’s on me CV now, I can move on!”
Filling up nicely for the last night of my tour at the legendary ‘Greystones’ in my home town - Sheffield. It’s been a good un - thanks to all who came along !
A few years ago at the Edinburgh Fringe I shared a narrow corridor with Scroobius Pip (our dressing room). In Pip’s latest podcast we reflect on that and discuss songwriting, comedy, my latest tour and new book - Two Margarines and other Domestic Dilemmas
Yesterday I bumped into international stills photographer Martin Parr
@martinparrfdn
(he still doesn’t do weddings!) He kindly carried my bag containing spare guitar plectrums up a cobbled hill..
At Sutton on Sea Social Club to watch a cabaret showcase featuring the legendary Noel Gee (he of cult TV documentary ‘SkegVegas’ fame - and in the group behind in the centre). But I’m horrified to see he’s shaved off his mullet!
My decision to forego the cramped tour bus for the luxury of a high speed train to Glasgow (for tonight’s

gig at

) has cruelly backfired. Due to high winds it’s standing room only on the slow replacement train!
Someone’s voice was annoying me on Radio 4 (as happens increasingly these days) so I’ve tuned in to an amazing show on Radio 3. Words And Music is a montage of poems and songs on a particular theme and this week’s is Nature and the City. Thought provoking yet restful too..
My new film ‘Father Earth’ is having a preview showing at the Little Theatre, Leicester on July 2nd. It’s about relationships - with my dad, son, and alter ego,
@johnshuttlewrth
Socially distanced with a q&a afterwards so you can get to see my new hairdo!
This may be of absolutely no interest to anyone, but the now broken portastudio on which I recorded the first series of Radio 4’s ‘The Shuttleworths’ is currently 99 pee on eBay with less than 2 days to go!
Stuck indoors this Saturday evening with nowhere to go? It’s highly likely! So why not join me for an hour’s interactive chat in the ‘Louder Than Words’ book festival
Will Self is still undoubtedly one of finest writers in the English language. Have a listen to this.. it’s brilliant. The only thing that annoys me about it is I assume he wrote it without really trying.
Father Earth is being screened in Montreux! Sorry, I mean Montrose - in Scotland’s first Climate focused Film Festival at midday on Sunday 17th September
Delighted that the final screening with Q&A this year in Bristol
@wshed
is selling so well it’s been moved to a bigger cinema. Proceeds go to
@BristolMind
and is in memory of Will Smith (he wrote and performed the incidental music)
Thanks to Mark Cosgrove and all who attended the Bristol Watershed screening
@wshed
dedicated to the memory of songwriter/musician Will Smith. In the Q&A his friend Hannah Buddle told me more about Will’s life. Check out his CD ‘A Means of Escape Through a Hedge’
Against my better judgement I’ve uploaded this monstrosity to YouTube - ‘I Tune Kevin’s Strings’. Another performance on ORS in early 81, I think and featuring The Freshies with Chris Sievey (Frank Sidebottom) on bass.
