Some awful news to impart: One of our most recognizable figures (it helped he stood 6-foot-9), a stalwart in the arts community, and a person with a heart even larger than he was, has died. Jack Garner is listening to stellar jazz somewhere right now.
Love when the wire picks up your story about a local Greece man and you get emails from across the country calling you illiterate and moron because everyone knows a man from Greece is a Greek man. Please wire service - make that "Greece NY" next time.
Looks like this is out publicly now, so I'll put this out there. A few years ago, filmmaker Sebastian Mylnarski purchased the rights to my book, Seven Million. The two hour doc will begin airing on March 15:
Just because you may have a callous and heartless take about the current pandemic, it doesn't mean you need to share it. People are dying, health care workers are battling. You can question when reopenings should happen, but at least have a soul in these dark times.
I think local media's quick coverage and pointed questions at yesterday's news conference show just how valuable local media can be. I know we received many calls yesterday about this, and I'm sure other media outlets did as well.
Dear Rochester community: If you receive calls or inquiries from individuals saying they are from the
@DandC
and asking for info to prepare for eclipse stories, ask whether they are members of the
@rocnewsguild
. If not, then please give them nothing.
It seems like the original decision to have Chick-Fil-A in the Thruway locations was the time to address this. Everyone knew (at least everyone sentient) that the restaurant doesn't open on Sundays.
A new bill headed to the New York State Assembly would require restaurants to open seven days a week at rest stop locations along the thruway. It specifically mentions Chick-Fil-A, which is closed on Sundays.

Guessing you may have used some of my story on background for Marshal nomination - and have a photo on file - but, just to be clear, I am not in the running for the job.
NY really should have made vaccination cards more wallet sized, like an American Red Cross blood donation card or drivers license or something of that size.
When this player's hijab started falling off to reveal her hair, her opponents gathered around to provide cover while she fixed it.
This is our mood today.
When one of us needs us: We stop. We huddle up. We protect each other.
I love the soccer. I love women.

Seeing La'Ron Singletary accept a rational explanation for the vote count hiccup, and seeing other candidates across country who are not within a winning margin accept defeat makes one hopeful that the madness is waning. Poll watching should not be a hazardous job.
For what it's worth, I have heard nothing from federal authorities to suggest the Buffalo protester shoved by police was an Antifa member. If the FBI, Secret Service, US Attorney's Office has evidence to contrary, please let us know. If you have no evidence, please let POTUS know
Gannett has shut down my phone - I use it personally also - so will be checking back in through the day. Thanks to all for the shows of support with gofundme, with social media, with honks downtown. We're in this for the long haul, so your support is crucial.
By the way, it was the lawyer for Tim Granison who asked for a 30-day break before the hearing because he has a trial out of state. Is he also part of the political plot to set the court date?
At a time of heartache and tough stories, I admit this is one of the tougher ones to write. Thank you Sue O'Brien for your strength, and we are all pulling for Ted:
To score against the Pats a receiver has to have possession, both feet in, complete two pirouettes, then sing the first act of La Boheme, according to NFL.
A federal court official whom I won't name sent me a nice note today, commending something I'd written, and added, "You have real potential in journalism."
Just a reminder how hard
@WillCleveland13
works: We learned of this arraignment probably 20 minutes before it started and Will jumped right on it. He does something like this every day.
#Breaking
: Hilton elementary school principal Kirk Ashton charged with nine counts of endangering the welfare of a child, six counts of first-degree sexual abuse, and five counts of second-degree course of sexual conduct. There are nine victims, all students, prosecutors say.
Reporting can be stressful sometimes, with deadlines, varying stories claiming to be true, and an assortment of personalities. But it does not compare to grocery shopping right now.
City of Rochester bringing suit against gun manufacturers and others in firearms industry, claiming there is responsibility there for violence in city.
Really odd. Within last few weeks, I've gotten a few queries about film rights for Seven Million. Hoping something in the works materializes, but probably won't know until next year. Not sure just why people finding the book now. (Also, remember how nice an Xmas gift it will be.)
Just learned of death of a college classmate who thought he’d gotten through Covid. His breath never returned fully, and he recently collapsed and could not be revived. Stay vigilant folks, for the sake of all.
I couldn't help myself. I said, "Do you mean the Jan. 5, 1993 robbery at 370 South Ave. of $7.4 million" and proceeded to name all of the guards. The subsequent silence and look on his face were priceless. (3/3)
The keyboards are now dry. Around 70 volunteers helped
@shawndunwoody
paint today. Thanks, Richard Glaser, for the photo and the idea behind the project.
Do 90 percent of the folks who now send LinkedIn invites then try to sell you something if you accept? Perhaps the bigger question: Why am I still on LinkedIn?
Overhearing parents at Starbucks talking about how resilient their kids have been during pandemic and accepting of masks and understanding what's happening when explained to them and wonder what in the world happens between that age and adulthood.
The voices of the Parkland Fla. students are powerful, visceral, anguished, angry, and urgent. I hope they continue to speak out before we slip again into our national slumber.
For some reason I keep thinking I'll see honesty, fairness and integrity from Gannett. Today proved how hopeless those wishes are. Either the company was duplicitous with its contract proposal or lazy and inept. Either option speaks volumes. Truly pathetic.
@EricVBailey
My stolen car led to calls from The Washington Post wanting to decide if the military had engineered the theft for the documents in the trunk about highly secretive electro-magnetic pulse testing.
A heavily armed assailant entered a Christian school in Nashville on Monday morning and fatally shot three children and three staff members before she was shot and killed by the police, the police department said.

Excuse my thread on first morning of strike: I woke up this morning energized and excited. Yes, that is easier for me than my younger colleagues. I'm near the end of the career. I have some financial stability, though I would have had much more with a different profession. (1/4)
Avoiding the socialist question, etc., but why do so many people who have issues with AOC think it's a slight to have been a "former bartender." Most bartenders I've met in NYC are smarter and probably better money managers than many CEOs who have failed their way into wealth.
Many of you asked about services for Jack Garner. Given the pandemic, and the crowds that would have to wait outside a service with the heat, the services this week will be for family. Next spring, the family plans to work with the local arts community to celebrate Jack's life.
I'll say this again here on Twitter but I will be taking leave from mid-December through much of January to work on a book with Dee Quinn Miller about her life and legacy of Attica uprising. Apologies that I won't be able to handle story ideas you may have for
@DandC
then. (1/2)
There are so many
@DandC
reporters and editors responsible for telling the story of the Trevyan Rowe tragedy that I would miss some if I tried to name them. But I truly believe were it not for their reporting then we would not be learning what we are as quickly as we are.
Back to work today, as are my colleagues (many of whom I now know better because of strike). Working on multiple stories then a talk to a UR writing class tonight. So, maybe work will tamp down the anger. We'll see. However ... (1/4)
Going to miss you so much in the field
@JaneFlasch
. This community has benefitted so much from your professionalism, your fairness, your story-telling, your investigative prowess. I will miss these times in court, such as what
@tyee23
caught here.
Pulitzer committee called to give me ample notice that Seven Million would win next year's nonfiction award. I told them I would be too busy to accept, so just keep it.
Congrats to
@GrammLou
and Foreigner for the HOF announcement. Lou, in case you don't know, the
@DandC
newsroom is now on strike and anyone who attempts to reach you is likely someone with no connection to this community.
The
@DandC
worked hard yesterday to report on the loss of a local titan, but what readers don't see is how
@seanlahman
worked all day pulling the many threads, anecdotes, facts together into a seamless story. The final story captures marvelously what made Louise special.
The tough loss is still fresh, but I still contend this Buffalo Bills team is learning how to win versus those in the past who created ways to lose. That's why I think many of us - for the first time in a long time - feel good about the future.
It's weird how many people who think government to be inept also find it capable of highly technical and massive scale voting manipulation and fraud so precise that reviews and courts cannot find proof of it.
Since I have some Twitter attention today, a gratuitous plug: It looks like Ireland's RTE network is doing a radio doc on Brinks heist this year. Some time in next two months they'll interview me. If you don't know the story, let me suggest a book:
It's been a long but rewarding day, folks. The support at our picketing site, on social media, and through the gofundme has been truly appreciated. There is more to do, and we continue to wait for Gannett to return to the table - with good-faith bargaining. (1/2)
A long time ago, while I was still at now-defunct Rochester Times-Union, I wrote of the late Mayor Tom Ryan appointing Teresa Johnson to City Court. She was the first Black woman on the court. She has now retired leaving the bench this week. Congrats on your career, Judge Johnson
Just noticed in my Leticia Astacio story that I wrote she was accused of illegally trying to "be a shotgun." Not sure if that would be a probation violation, but is now corrected to "buy a shotgun."
Bargaining update with
@rocnewsguild
: The company has agreed to come back to the table on Wednesday. (Hosanna!) The company, in its continued respect for its work force, agreed to a full hour of bargaining. Make of that what you will. We'll be back at picket line Monday. (1/2)
