I live, work and travel between Nairobi, Kajiado and Meru counties frequently. Here's what stands the most about each county (for me): Meru: small farms and high unemployment rate. Farms have become so small, they're not commercially viable. This plus failed rainfall seasons

This is an environment officer in Nairobi County. I love his approach to his job - informing, correcting and educating. Because the usual Kenyan approach is the punitive colonial relic - arresting, fines and jail. Hopefully this new approach leads to actual changed behavior.

OK, reminded me of this story Wangari shared on FB. You join a national school as a rural kid and your parents think it's the jackpot! Kumbe the shrubbing, and the accent will make you get bullied to depression and lack of self esteem 👇🏾

Growing up, every 31st December I would sit to watch Dunia Mwaka Huu on KBC tv. I didn't understand half of it, but it felt important, to just sit and be a participant in world affairs. I've always liked that.

I read this paper last year and it was mindblowing..how the researcher captures nuances of class, age, gender in the creation of group ranches in Kajiado... the holy grail of how local research should be contextualized. Looked her up for mentorship only to find an obituary 💔💔

Which is really sad because it's a missed opportunity to brand and market Kajiado or Chalbi goat meat, which I'm told have unique flavour profiles to be branded?

My last 1.5 years have been a roller-coaster from leaving my job to trying my hand at multiple projects with varying levels of success... And all this time kumbe the lesson I needed to learn was "I am enough. " Whatever I felt I needed to be, I already am.

This tweet sounds very progressive, but it lacks one thing - a cultural understanding of the Meru society. Ask any female leader in the community - even a simple school headteacher what they have to deal with. I know of one who can't eat staffroom lunches for fear of being

Embu has a female governor. Nakuru has a female governor. Kwale has a female governor. Kirinyaga has a female governor. Homabay has a female governor. Kawira Mwangaza isn't the first governor to be impeached ×2 Narrative of gender motivated Political persecution is baseless.

Lol, this isn't about the size of the fish, but it's position in the food chain. Toxins find their way in the water body, they're consumed by smaller organisms, which are consumed by larger organisms and so on. I understand the need to warn consumers about food safety, but the

I hope environmentalists were consulted for the tree planting exercise, because there's a formula to it - the species of trees, where to plant, season timing, the ecology, and the post-planting care. Unless it's agroforestry, it's not just putting seedlings in a hole & moving on

Nairobi in a few years On account of every apartment building having its own borehole Means we're privatizing groundwater. I truly believe boreholes should be communally owned to prevent each apartment drilling for its own. Water is then piped to each building block @WRA_KEN

The conversation on minerals isn't complete without the gemstones mined in Taita Taveta - including tsavorite, unique to this part of the Mozambique belt, & nowhere else in the world. We get cents compared to the thousands of $$ fetched when they're processed and sold abroad

You can prepare your grains beautifully like this for milling to get porridge flour, wash, dry properly only to mill them at a facility that just milled aflatoxin maize for animal feed. Food safety is a systemic issue,, no amount of individual effort can protect you

Lots of people want "to live on the farm" without realising how long and tedious food preparation can be. If you are getting everything off the farm, with no hired labour, food preparation (harvesting, cleaning, processing e.g peeling, soaking, cooking) is half a day at least

Go back to the village they said. They didn't say about the 24-48 hour blackouts. Village towns are "insignificant" in Kenya Power priority list. Solar is usually helpful but not with these 24 hour non stop rains. Remote working in the pits 😕
