I have to pinch myself every time I amble along Boulevard Anspach in central Brussels. Seven years ago it was a dirty, noisy highway. Now it’s a green, car-free shopping and eating street. Not perfect but so much better.

Boulevard Anspach in #Brussels . This was once a dirty, noisy thoroughfare that sliced through the historic centre. Now it’s a pedestrianised walkway teeming with cyclists, strollers and shoppers. Staggering change in just a few years.

So, on destroying statues: My favourite story is of the world’s largest Stalin statue (at the time) built in 1955 in a park overlooking Prague. At 15.5m it was an absolute beast & took over 5 years to build. /1

Brussels’ main problem isn’t lack of space. It’s lack of imagination. Take Av de deuxième régiment des lanciers in Etterbeek. 6 lanes of parking with no houses or shops either side. So easy to put in bike lanes, play areas, benches at minimal cost and maximum benefit to locals.

There are few more annoying sights in Brussels than car-owners who privatise public space by having garages but are too lazy to use them, preferring to park across half the pavement.
