18 years a priest today. Celebrated Mass at the tomb of St. Dominic and used those great prayers from the back of the Missal ‘for a priest on his ordination anniversary.’
One of the best things about living in Rome is that you can go on an afternoon walk, stop into some random church, and find one of the finest pieces of art in the world.
Best story on the internet today. Men being men. Selfless, courageous, intelligent, heroic, communal, humble, Christ-like. The antithesis of toxic masculinity. More of this please.
Good Samaritans stopped on both sides of the highway in a dramatic rescue of a pickup truck driver whose vehicle overturned in Illinois. The group banded together to flip the truck on its side and help the driver climb out of the truck.
Friends, I have some good news: my bishop has appointed me to the new position of Vicar for Evangelization in the
@DIOCESEofCLE
. I’ll start this mission after my doctoral defense and will also resume teaching philosophy at the seminary. I’m super excited. Please pray for me. ⚜️
My mom died 19 years ago today, with a crucifix in her hands, surrounded by the Hawthorne Dominicans (her nurses/nuns/friends), her pastor, her husband, and her sons. Death is no fun, but there is such a thing in Catholicism as a happy death. My mom had one. It was a gift. 💀
There is a strange comfort for Catholics to know that when death comes suddenly, the Church has a response.
I offered my Mass today for Kobe, Gianna Marie, and their 7 friends. (I also wore purple, because it seemed appropriate.)
If you are currently suffering, know this: the degree to which to experience the pain of Good Friday is equivalent to the degree to which you will experience the joy of Easter Sunday. So hang in there. The Lord is purifying you for something great.

Been thinking about my dad & his time serving on a destroyer during WWII. He went without the sacraments for months on end, but prayed his rosary daily and survived. After the war he was a daily Mass goer pretty much until the day he died. So we’ll be alright. Keep praying. ⚓️
On the feast of St. Agatha, whose breasts were lopped off by the Romans, I preached to my seminarians on the mystery & beauty of the breast, the dignity of women, and the necessity for priests & seminarians to have deep, loving, chaste friendships with women. No one fell asleep.
Discernment tip: Don't be so concerned about figuring out whether you're called to be a sister, priest, married, etc. Be concerned with all the little decisions you make today. If you practice doing God's will in the little things, the big stuff will fall into place naturally.
“God takes pleasure to see you take your little steps; and like a good father who holds his child by the hand, He will accommodate His steps to yours and will be content to go no faster than you. Why do you worry?”

I had a little meeting with
@Pontifex
on Tuesday. I was all ready to go with a line in Italian, but I got really nervous and tongue-tied, so my Bishop kindly jumped in and told the Pope that I wrote a book for those on the peripheries.

St. Augustine wrote ‘Confessions’ as a bishop. He wrote about his struggles with pride & lust not to boast about them but to bring others to conversion, and it worked. It continues to work.
(Sometimes I wonder if Augustine would make it as a bishop today.)
When Jesus told Matthew, “Follow me,” the tax collector did not
- request more information
- think about the invitation
- pray about the invitation
- overanalyze the invitation
- consider other options
- hesitate
Nope. The Gospel simply states, “he got up and followed him.”
My dad died two years ago today. I miss him, but I’m grateful that I had a really good dad and realize that I did nothing to deserve such a gift. If you’re a dad, do everything you can to be a good one. (Pictured below is my dad at 86 years old, still working it. 💪🏼🇸🇰⚓️)
I waved to a stranger from our rooftop this afternoon and she waved back from her rooftop.
That was it, but it was beautiful. Quarantine calls for social distancing, but in doing so it offers a new opportunity for social communion. Who knew?
Have you ever wondered about what the people who occupied your hotel room before you did in there? Me too. So I offered today’s Mass for the people who will occupy this room next. May they know that the Lord was here and that He loves them.
When I was in 5th grade I wrote a book about rescuing Bruce Springsteen from a Libyan prison. Sister Elizabeth insisted on an “About The Author” page. I’m glad she did. Here’s mine.

Friends, my dad died three years ago today. He was a WWII veteran, so I went down to the American cemetery in Nettuno in his honor & to honor all veterans.

One way to understand ‘the grain of wheat’ in today’s Gospel is as our will. Until we stop trying save ourselves, we won’t find the healing, redemption & joy we long for. Christianity is a not a self-help religion, but one of salvation. We need a Savior. 🌾
On the first night of parish missions I explain what we mean by the ‘resurrection of the dead’ - that we eventually get our bodies back (glorified bodies) & that we don’t turn into angels in heaven. Many people tell me they hadn’t heard this teaching before.
Happy Feast of the Annunciation!
And Happy Dante Day! (The Divine Comedy begins on March 25.) And happy Flannery O’Connor birthday.
It is the perfect day to formally deposit a dissertation. 🦚
My dad would have been 98 today. He disliked the

beat the Yanks in extra innings. I am not sad.

Friends, I was officially accepted into the doctoral program in philosophy at the Angelicum today. Please pray for me. Grazie! 🦉📚 @ Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum)
Yesterday’s Gospel: “Get behind me, Satan.”
Today’s Gospel: “And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.”
The Christian life is a life of conversions.

Another reason to respect
@VicOladipo
is that he was spotted at one of our churches in the

for the vigil Mass last night. Any professional athlete that makes time for Mass is a hero in my book. 💪🏾
Christ didn’t hand on his ideas or his teachings at the last supper. He didn’t say ‘take this all of you and read it.’ No. He handed on his body and blood and said ‘eat and drink.’
I wrote this book not so much for the devout Catholic, but for the friend or family member of the devout Catholic who isn’t so devout. It’s a re-presentation of the Catholic faith for people who have seen a thing or two & wonder if Catholicism has anything good to say.
Friends, I have some exciting news to share. The doctoral commission at The

has approved my research project. Here’s the dissertation title:
The Hillbilly Thomist as Thomist: The Philosophical Foundations of Flannery O’Connor’s Art.

Maybe next year some of the Catholics who partipate in the

A St. Thomas Aquinas story: As a child his classmates told him that a cow was flying through the air. He got up to see the cow -
his classmates laughed.
Thomas responded, “I’d rather believe that a cow was flying through the air than believe that my friends would lie to me.” 😳
I’m so very proud to be a Catholic seeing all the creative and imaginitaive ways people are practicing their faith in these very strange times. An Incarnational Church never quits. 🇻🇦
