My mom died 19 years ago today, with a crucifix in her hands, surrounded by the Hawthorne Dominicans (her nurses/nuns/friends), her pastor, her husband, and her sons. Death is no fun, but there is such a thing in Catholicism as a happy death. My mom had one. It was a gift. 💀

Been thinking about my dad & his time serving on a destroyer during WWII. He went without the sacraments for months on end, but prayed his rosary daily and survived. After the war he was a daily Mass goer pretty much until the day he died. So we’ll be alright. Keep praying. ⚓️

St. Augustine wrote ‘Confessions’ as a bishop. He wrote about his struggles with pride & lust not to boast about them but to bring others to conversion, and it worked. It continues to work. (Sometimes I wonder if Augustine would make it as a bishop today.)
