I'm super sad about what is happening with Twitter right now, for all its faults its been an amazing way to connect with different communities.
A very round baby falcon discovers carpet for the first time:
She fluttered there (to her surprise) and her feet touching the new surface made her both try to do the bath dance in it and to kill it with grabbyfeet.

In case anyone thinks borzoi are dogs and not unicorn princess noodles:
Cyrano came limping, crying into the room favoring one paw. When I ran to check the source of his agony, he had a small banana label sticker stuck to one foot.
He knows he's not supposed to stand on the counter unless invited, so he has taken to sitting on the barstools to watch me cook. But sitting nicely is a lot of work, so it turns into slouching, then being a comfy pancake on the barstool instead.

This emu has taken over the duck coop and is now diligently siting on goose eggs. I just watched a chicken run in, burrow under him, lay an egg, and leave.
We can't have him inside while we extract honey, so he's had to stay in the sun porch a few nights. Whenever I go back into the house he tries to follow, then sits peeking in the doorway window, like "Excuse me, you forgot your vulture."
I feel like such a monster
Have you heard of the honey buzzard? If you haven't, you are in for a treat!
These raptors specialize in raiding wasp & bee nests, eating honey, larvae, and pollen.
Their head feathers have developed into hard, armor-like scales to protect them from stings.

Another day of gardening ruined by emu-related intransigence, intereference, and indifference to my attempts to do home maintenance.
I tried to sneak out with the hose when none were around and they instantly materialized, demanding watering.
This turkey snuck off and succesfully hatched out.. one chicken chick. She is being the most loving and attentive mom to the baby, and seeing them toddling along together throughout the day makes me smile.

Sev, and and all of us at the Foxloft Flock wish you the happiest of spooky days! Please tell someone how awesome vultures are, today!

Someone, who shall remain nameless, just vindictively threw a quail leg onto something I am painting after not being allowed to bathe in my dirty paint water.
My family sent me a beautiful orchid for my birthday today and Stormfly immediately had to go check it out and claim it as her own. It was very nice for someone to send her princess flowers.
"This giant child, it is mine."
Stormfly has been messing with chicken eggs lately and I wasn't sure of her intentions until I found her fluffed up and sitting on one. Actual kestrel eggs are almost 1/10th as small as large chicken eggs, but Stormfly has always been ambitious.
Did you know baby turkeys strut and display even when they are still little frizzy fluffballs? They get nervous about it and blush, and if they get rejected (which is inevitable, they impress no girls) they sulk and pout.
I think I'm totally doing this right!
Vultures have a stomach 100x more acidic than a human, more acidic than battery acid. This lets them neutralize pathogens like anthrax, botulism, and rabies, purifying the environment! They are the powerhouses of nature's cleaning crew.
Everything is so hard right now I want to offer some hopeful good things: emu eggs in the process of hatching. The little whistling peeps are the babies inside, calling back to my voice. (Apologies for dog burp and parrot accompaniments)

I've been so sick I've barely been able to get out of bed. Stormfly came looking for me. Having discovered where I've been hiding, she decided that alternately jumping on my face and attacking the blankets is definitely helpful. You never know, they may be full of mice.
She can go anywhere during the day, but her favorite thing to do is sit on me while I work. She also hops onto my desk to attack all my pencils, toss my paperwork onto the floor, and track kestrel tracks across my paintings.

Lots of people have asked about how emus react to snow, so I present: Emus in winter, a thread.
(Zal is a leucistic emu, so he's white with blue eyes - it's one of the few color morphs we know of in emu.)
This cute little friend tumbled out of someone's chimney today. I usually only take birds, but I'm the only rehabber in my area so he's here for needed fluids & some tlc until I can get him to the big center. They care for over 200 bats interrupted in hibernation each winter!
Everyone keeps asking if the baby emus will still cuddle/be friendly as adults. Raised this way, yes - all our adults are friendly. Not all of them want to be touched but some of them love hugs and pets and come smoosh against me when I'm outside.
My husband came crawling into the bedroom, I immediately worried what was wrong?
Then I noticed the baby vulture on his back. Mbala had been reading on the floor and the baby was so happy there he didn't want to move him.
Now it's the Vulture Train to Azkaban! Bedtime for birds.
I use the vacuum, he's got to touch it and pull the house around, too.
I wash the floor with a rag, he steals it and drags it around, too.
I've worked with plenty of birds who were curious about what I was doing, but never one who was such a thoughtful mimic!
#babyvulture
Stormfly seems exceptionally happy that I am home. She has reached maximum fluff. She is following me around and supervising the printing of shipping labels once again. She seems quite sure that mice may fall out of the printer at any moment, so it warrants very close observation
Two weeks later, our emu is still carefully sitting atop his nest of adopted goose, duck, and chicken eggs.. he may actually hatch something. In emus, only the males incubate eggs and care for babies, the females lay eggs and bounce; that's the end of parenting for them.
For those of you who are new here, and for everyone who has been following along with the saga, let me present to you : The story of Napoleon, the wayward rooster, and Turkey Girl, his star-crossed lover. Part 1:
#birdtwitter
BB-8 did it again; after almost two months never leaving his nest, even through a blizzard, he's successfully hatched out chicks, three so far. He's such a devoted dad!
Somebody is just starting to get the beginnings of yellow color on his face :)
In the next few years his eyes will turn bright red and his face will turn a vibrant mix of yellow, orange, red, and blue as he morphs into an adult. But he'll always by my

We just learned to stand, so our legs are still wobbly. Our hoppyflaps are just coming in and we're not quite sure how to deploy them yet, but practice makes perfect!

It's really fun to see how his eyes move. He's just being a thoughtful pancake, watching the chicken politics outside.
(noise warning: roosters crowing)

I messaged my husband asking how the birds were (because I can't stand to be away from them for a few hours), he sent me this
(Sound warning - bird squeaking)
Stormfly absolutely loves him. She's super quiet (when not yelling at snow), but she uses this call just for him
Diva does the same 'my foot should be touching your foot' thing that Sev did as a baby.
Vultures are very gentle, loving parents and spend a lot of time cuddling with their chicks. They are very sweet, sensitive, gentle birds!
#lovevultures
Our goose throuple has managed to make one goose this year, and they are very proud and doting parents. The gosling already has 100% of their sassy attitude.
(They're terrible incubators and try to rotate between multiple nests so it's amazing a chick hatched at all. Superchick.)
People always ask if the emus are friendly. Ours love to be pet and want to be in the middle of anything we're doing. If well socialized around people, emus can be super friendly and affectionate.
