as much as it's likely the animators just not knowing the rules of chess, i like to view it as ford witnesses bill cheating right off the bat, so he does the same to test the waters. bill continues like normal so ford accepts that theyre playing dirty and thats why he smiles :^)

au where stan becomes jaded to his family after being kicked out and shunned so he has no qualms with manipulating ford. he can see right through bill's conman-esque lies and manipulation but he simply doesnt care bc bill help his business flourish. are we seeing the vision.

tbh i dont even think he would be truly evil. it's genuinely pretty difficult to picture an actually evil stan unless you radically change his backstory and motivations. in this he just turns his hurt into spite and the fact that he actually succeeds only fuels his drive.
