In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, my wife organized an event to raise money for childhood cancer research. This is in honor of our niece, who is currently fighting Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Please consider donating if you can.
Don't see indisputable video evidence from any angles shown to overturn the ruling on the field. The standard for changing the call should be much higher than this.
The first use of the XFL's superchallenge rule (challenge any element of any play once per game) was used to try to get a penalty called for defensive offside. Result of the play stands
If this game is not flexed to Sunday afternoon, this is overturned with a shot from the NBC pylon camera. I really think the evidence is clear and obvious, but we have seen calls like this stand before.
This is the first legitimate 11-10 final in NFL history. Because of a replay mistake in 2008, the Steelers won 11-10 over the San Diego Chargers, but it was discovered after the game was declared final by the referee that a replay on the final play should have stood
Football Zebras exclusive: Down judge Hugo Cruz, who missed a clear false start in Week 6, has been fired by the NFL. This is the first midseason firing in the Super Bowl era.
When a runner puts the ball forward and voluntarily takes it back, they do not get the forward reach. Contrast that to a forward progress call at the line-to-gain (leap over the top), the forward progress spot is typically awarded before the runner pulls the ball back
Obviously very little restriction on this, and the uncalled DPI in the 1Q was a little more restrictive. Arm does come around, and we agree w/Mike Pereira that we don't have the angle the official had for a potential jersey tug. Given what I see, this would be one to pass on
The play cannot be allowed to stand just because players didn't hear the whistle. If an official calls the play dead, it is dead, because we have to assume that at least 1 player reacted to the whistle
First, the warnings typically come in the first quarter. They do not come in the 4th quarter when the receiver is aligned with the helmet of the center and a foot on the defensive side of the ball. And to be honest, that's even more than you would expect for a 1st quarter warning
Chiefs’ HC Andy Reid was not pleased that officials did not warn him that Kadarius Toney was lined up offsides the way they have in the past. About the call, the normally mild-mannered Reid said, “It's a bit embarrassing for the National Football League for that to take place.”
Questions on whether there was an illegal block in the back by the Patriots. These are the most consequential blocks on the return and the approach is from the side in each case
Look, we are all football fans. But autograph seeking, even if in the tunnel, cannot be tolerated. SJ Jeff Lamberth (21st season) and LJ Tripp Sutter (4) know better. This may be the last season for Lamberth, but that's no excuse to cross a line like this
In a new annual feature, Football Zebras is recognizing an announcer who has good rules knowledge and has a general understanding of officiating. Our first Broadcaster of the Year is Adam Amin.
If you are a reporting lineman, it is 100% on you to ensure the referee acknowledges that you reported. 70 signaled by brushing his chest and Brad Allen pointed to him in acknowledgement. 68 got no feedback from the referee
The foul for pulling the runner has not been called in 30 years. Not hyperbole. Literally, January 1992 was the last one. We covered this in a post in 2019
🔗
In the Music City Bowl, the line judge ruled that the runner's forward progress was stopped. Therefore, anything after that ruling cannot be considered by replay.
The announcers are focusing on the whistle, which is irrelevant. The ruling stops the play, not the whistle.
RULES SCHOOL: On a field goal attempt, the ball must go through the opening of the goal AND touch something on the other side of the goal. If the wind blows the ball back through the uprights, the field goal attempt fails
Art McNally, former referee and head of officiating, has died at the age of 97. He was the first official inducted into the
@ProFootballHOF
last August. Post is coming soon.
Line judge Jeff Bergman has retired after 30 seasons. With that, it is the last time officials will hear the warble of a metal whistle in the NFL. Here is one of the last times you will hear that sound in a game
We covered this in the liveblog, but this is the technique the league wants to see from def players, going over the top of the quarterback. It looks like the judgement call made here was that the body weight was lowered on the QB, but that is not the case
I definitely heard a whistle. And I see LJ Mark Steinkerchner with his whistle in hand by his mouth. It certainly looks like an inadvertent whistle, which means there is no touchdown

Even IF the officials did something wrong — and I understand seeing it with rose-colored glasses — this is incredibly wrong, disrespectful, and downright dangerous. These remarks go beyond the NFL field, and I hope Dak takes time to think that over and take it back
Cowboys QB Dak Prescott disparaged fans for throwing bottles, debris at players. Then Prescott was told the fans were aiming for officiating crew. Prescott retracted. “A credit to them then.”
As for any block in the back on the punt, the one CIN blocker overshot the returner and comes to a stop causing a collision. That contact is inadvertent. The replay starts with another action in progress, so it doesn't provide a full picture to determine legal/illegal contact
The miscall by the DJ marking the Patriots' receiver out of bounds is the tip of the iceberg made out of colossal misfires for Jerome Boger's crew today. Compounded by early whistles and a weak blindside block call early, it has NOT been the crew's day.
The foul for pulling the runner is never called. I mean it is just not called, and it really is reserved for extreme circumstances beyond a yard or two in the trenches. But THIS is pulling the runner. Last time we have a record of it called is 1991
Sad news in the officiating world. Football Zebras has confirmed that former NFL referee Bill Leavy died last night at the age of 76. He served as an NFL officiating supervisor for the last 8 years
Looks like we have a late substitution at the referee position in Cincinnati. Ron Torbert is in for John Hussey. This is the first unscheduled white hat substitution of the season
How does that hold not get called? The official who is keying that receiver sees a chuck within 5 yards, but does not have the angle to see the inside contact. No "tell" that the receiver is being held (extreme dip of shoulder, etc). Not an acceptable excuse, that MUST be called
Best shot we have showing Skipper coming in making a signal when the replay starts rolling and his hands are in front of his chest. Allen points to Skipper to acknowledge he's received the signal. Maybe he's faking a signal to confuse the defense, but it backfired
Quay Walker shoved a trainer and it is the 14th ejection of the season, and HIS SECOND. According to
@QuirkyResearch
, Walker is the first player to be ejected twice in a season since Tyji Armstrong (1994 Bucs)

A QB is given low hit protection immediately following a pass, which is defined at the knee or below. Brady was hit in the thigh here, so this should not have been roughing the passer
Referee John Hussey just announced the NE-GB game was terminated 10:29/4Q by agreement of both coaches due to a severe injury. NE CB Isaiah Bolden was removed from the field by ambulance
Tinted visors are allowed with preclearance from the league on doctor's recommendation. If you aren't on the list, they will suspend you from the game until it's fixed
Following a touchdown, the 40 sec clock runs as soon as the touchdown signal is dropped. If replay has not confirmed the score, the play clock will hold at 20, and resume on the ready for play. Teams well aware of this mechanic and has been in place for a few years
Bucs fans here and on Reddit have pointed out that play clock before Tampa Bay's initial two-point conversion attempt was only 20 seconds, not the 25 listed in the NFL rule book for before a two-point conversion. Only 20 seconds elapse from whistle to clock hitting zero.
This has been an incredible season, with some pretty big stories we have been able to break. Our Twitter following is up 30%, and 16% on traffic to our site. This ends 10 years for us, and I'm happy that we produce something that you have found interesting. Thank you
The "facemask" on 2nd & goal was an open hand and incidental contact. No grasp/pull/control of the facemask. This used to be a 5yd penalty, but incidental FM is no longer a foul
Yes, it is not ready for play until spotted by the umpire. He hustled his ass to get there, and the offense lined up, obstructing his path. Officials did their job to get the ball ready for play despite an ill-advised run on the previous down
Former
@Big12Conference
referee Mike Defee has been hired by the NFL as a position coach. In this new position, he will work again with Walt Anderson, who was hired as the Sr VP of development and training. New approach to help improve officiating.
#Big12
On an obvious clock play, the umpire can tap the ball when players spot the ball near where it needs to be. The spot of the slide is before the 25, and the center has the ball well beyond that spot. Umpire Ramon George correctly pushed it back so there was ~1 yd margin
Tripping is not often called, and not because it doesn't happen. Not easy to spot in traffic. That said, these MUST get called, especially when the offense's goal line is threatened.
This is the final regular season game for 23-yr veteran LJ Mark Perlman. This is his 350th regular season game, plus he's worked 7 Wild Cards, 11 Divisionals, 4 CCGs, XL, XLIII, XLIX. He has been gotten an on-field assignment EVERY SINGLE postseason he's been eligible
Congratulations, Art McNally! Canton bound!
Officials are Hall of Famers, too.
We have waited so long for this moment, and hopefully there's not a long wait for the second official.
Got a better look at this in the postgame with the zoomed angle. 70 gives the signal and Allen acknowledges with a point. 68 did not get a response from Allen. It is completely on the lineman to report directly and receive positive feedback from the referee
Still trying to determine how DET70 is running onto the field and is announced to have reported. Have to wait for the pool report to get more clarity on the exchange that went on before the nullified 2PC
Regarding the viral holding call "at the snap": The snap isn't from the center, so originally flagged as illegal formation, but correctly picked up. TEN71 holds in proximity to the handoff, flag by Tony Corrente is offscreen. Should have announced the pickup, but all checks out
There really is no template to work from that is publicly discussed on a situation like this. At this point the officials turn everything over to Football Operations for further instruction. Suspending the game and resuming later with a postponement of the playoffs seems possible
Hey,
@NFL
. We are 9% of the way through the 2021 season, and
#GamePass
still has not added coach's films or All-22. You were quick to charge the full freight like clockwork on August 1, knowing you would not have your product ready. We are due a partial refund. This is not right.
Bills defensive lineman A.J. Epenesa reached the locker a minute before his teammates, as he was ejected for elbowing referee John Hussey, who is livid. SVP/officiating Walt Anderson affirmed the ejection. 5th ejection of season, 2nd by Hussey in 2 weeks.
This ends our 9th full season of coverage. I am pleased to have a wonderful staff of knowledgeable writers. I'm happy to have you, the reader, check out what we have to say (agree or disagree). It really makes this project all the more rewarding.
For those who are new here…
The 👏 play 👏 clock 👏 is 👏 not 👏 a 👏 shot 👏 clock.
Back judge looks for snap only when the clock hits 0. Adds about ½ sec cushion. You can snap on the 0, but not after. They've done it this way for 100 years
I know rules are rules, but Red Zone Channel is sending the audience to their CBS affiliates for the conclusion of overtime, but that only pertains to the areas in green and those with Sunday Ticket

Al Riveron has set a dangerous precedent to override the on-field officials well after the fact to fix an apparent inequity, while creating inequities in the process.
The penalty for defensive delay of game for consecutive timeouts is only there in cases where the official accidentally grants the timeout ... Which. Should. NEVER. Happen. Had the timeout not been granted, there is no foul (except to ice the kicker), the request is just ignored
