We have long heard that waters off the So Cal coast are too cold to sustain a hurricane. They are, even now. So why is #HurricaneHilary going to pound us? I spoke with weather service forecaster Miguel Miller about this last night. Below right is why Hilary could wreak havoc:

If San Diego doesn't set a daily rain record on Sunday, this will be one of the all-time blown forecasts. The city's record for Aug. 20 is 0.08 of an inch, in 1906. Any rain in August is rare. There are 13 days in the month that have never recorded even 0.08. #sandiegoweather

This is purely anecdotal and based on my admittedly faulty memory, but many of the best sunsets around here seem to come in November. Very nice one tonight in North County. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

I’m no optics expert, and I’ve definitely been unable to capture a usable outdoor eclipse image with my phone. But these shadows in our kitchen SEEM to correspond with evolving eclipse this morning. Anyone else get similar shadows? #eclipse

Just stunning tonight. Sometimes, clouds seem to be lining up nicely in the late afternoon for a good sunset, then it disappoints. Not tonight. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Don't remember this kind of September. Many spots west of the mountains in San Diego County didn't make it to 70° today: Encinitas, San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, 67; Miramar, 68; Del Mar, Vista, Valley Center, Alpine, Carlsbad, 69. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

It's been pouring pretty steadily for the last half hour here in inland North County. I'm starting to think we'll end up with 2.5 inches out of #Hilary . #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Sorry for my slowness in posting this, but it's worth the wait. Howard Lipin sent this dramatic shot of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt arriving back in San Diego Thursday after an overhaul in Bremerton, Wash. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The latest insane rainfall forecast map. Another 3 or 4 inches in the inland valleys? 4 or 5 at Palomar Mountain, which just got 5.8 last week? #sandiegoweather #CAwx #atmosohericriver

Every spring, the question is, is it worth it drive out to Borrego Springs for the wildflowers? Well, a couple thousand of my closest friends thought so today. Henderson Canyon was a bouquet. Tremendous volume and variety, plus the sky and clouds were awesome, too. #CAwx

Oh boy. This is shaping up to be one of San Diego County's wetter weeks in a while. The next storm should leave the county wetter than most areas to the north, unlike the current one. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

The odds are very small, but the National Hurricane Center now has a chance of tropical-storm-force winds just clipping San Diego. #sandiegoweather #CAwx #Kay

San Diego's 3.32 inches of rain from Saturday through Monday is the most the city has recorded over a 3-day stretch in almost 20 years. The last time more fell on the city in 3 days was Feb. 21-23, 2005, when 3.49 inches fell. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Rain continues to be concentrated across Orange/San Bernardino/western Riverside Counties this morning. San Diego County: the rain has not started yet, and you are not missing out on the storm. The rain will progress farther southeastward this afternoon and evening. #CAwx

The latest forecast on Kay from the National Hurricane Center. That probability cone is pretty dang close to San Diego. The timing & location of the expected westward turn as a tropical storm will help determine how big impacts are in San Diego County. #sandiegoweather #CAwx #Kay

Ready for another deluge? The Climate Prediction Center is confident one is coming to the West. The question is, exactly where? San Diego might be in for an extended wet period. My story today in Voice of San Diego. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

San Diego is up to 0.04 of an inch of rain from the storm. A tiny amount, obviously, although much more is expected. IF it didn't rain another drop all month, this would STILL be wetter than more than 100 Septembers in city history, going back to 1850. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

OK. So we've got your very strong, potentially damaging winds. We've got your snow, falling maybe below 2K feet. We've got your coldest February days in possibly decades. Why not throw in an atmospheric river? NWS says we'll get one later this week, too. #sandiegoweather #CAwx

I was fully expecting a long, post-tropical-storm chore of netting the pool this morning. But there have been many more leaves, twigs and other stuff in the pool after Santa Anas and some blustery winter storms. Sunday’s wind was unremarkable. Not complaining. #sandiegoweather

Sting played “Heavy cloud no rain” tonight at Petco. As apt a song as possible. Dry so far. Sting was fantastic. Billy Joel next. Will the rain still hold off? San Diego is putting on a show, too. #Petco #sandiegoweather #CAwx

Some low clouds snuck in on the western horizon just before sunset here in inland North County, but they didn’t dilute the color. Was a very nice one, with some crepuscular rays as a bonus. #sandiegoweather #CAwx
