Has anyone else had a horrible cough/virus that doesn’t seem to go? Not Covid, but producing horrible cough that seems to go and then comes back with a vengeance?
It seems to be affecting several members of my family and friends atm
The tweet has been deleted, but the damage is done. Seeing a Booker prize judge giggle & pour scorn on the fact that a dinner lady & steelworker had attended a book club is patronising & sickening
My parents were working class and avid readers. My dad was a Shakespeare expert.
Unless we begin to break down these dangerous stereotypes in publishing and begin to open up these literary prizes, I really don’t think the industry will be able to move forward
Working class people read
Working class people write
Working class people matter
Years ago I lost my son in Marks & Spencers. I was panic stricken. After 5 minutes of searching the shop floor, I grabbed a member of staff and asked her for some help.
I didnt know whether to laugh or cry when we found him here, pretending to be a shop dummy 🙈
It might sound like a small thing, but this assumption that working class folk aren’t readers is so damaging
It’s why public libraries have been allowed to be reduced and replaced. It’s why school libraries fight for funding to exist let alone buy books.
Reading goes beyond class
2 years ago we lost our leopard gecko - Obi
Tonight my son found him in the garage. I have no clue how he survived in the cold for so long! He’s much skinnier than the picture but still has his tail
What a fighter
14 year daughter:
“I had my first ignorant straight girl comment. Turned around in class and the girl behind me saw my LGBT badge. Immediately she was said ‘Omg, do you fancy me. Started giggling like an idiot.”
Me - “what did you say?”
Her - “Sorry babe, I have standards.”
👏🏻
Maybe I’m a grump, but I wish
#WorldBookDay
could return to the pure celebration of the joy of reading.
Bring in your favourite ever book. Write reviews. Share a book that not many people know
Dressing up as David Wallaims characters & spending £££ on costumes is not necessary
I’m often asked if you can view yourself as working class - if your circumstances have improved.
It is complex, but I believe that childhood experiences shape you for the future
My belief system, my fears, my insecurity, my strive for more is driven by my working class roots
This is divisive & unhelpful. I'm from a working class background but still appreciate my
#WhitePrivilege
Class & race are seperate things. I've never been held back because of the colour of my skin. This elitist government needs to see the difference.
Dido Harding says she will “End NHS reliance on foreigners”
This is her priority. Not reduce waiting lists, focusing on mental health crisis, looking at staff retention/satisfaction or growing waiting lists.
Harding will be the final nail in the NHS's coffin
I love milk but watching
#Panorama
tonight is the last straw. What we doing to our dairy cows is horrific.
What are the best alternatives? I don’t really like soya milk. Love oat but too much gives me a tummy ache…
When I was 11 I remember telling my big sister that my ambition was to have my "own shelf" in the library like Enid Blyton or Roald Dahl.
It might not count, as it's the library where I work - but the little girl in me still smiled.
@amonck
Why do we need to make reference to professions though? I really do not understand the relevance. Also I’m not “piling in” just sharing disappointment. This industry is littered with issues regarding class and diversity
@TomSpeers1
Why is this cringe? I asked a question out of interest, expecting a few replies. I have never once said that this isn’t a winter virus - just stated that it’s a particularly nasty one
I ran a creative writing group for primary school kids and asked them what they thought was needed to make a great story
1st child “Full stops, commas and speech marks.”
2nd child “Adverbs.”
3rd child “personification.”
No mention of character, plot etc. Just all technical bits
Just a reminder that commercial women’s fiction is one of the most exciting and successful genres out there. And it’s successful for a reason.
So tired of it being overlooked, or dismissed as a ‘lesser’ option. Book snobbery is unnecessary and it’s never a good look.
It’s non uniform day and my daughter has gone in wearing full goth/emo gear for the first time - including 3inch platform boots.
This girl lacks so much confidence, but today she has gone in saying “this is me”
I’m very proud. I just hope she doesn’t face too much negativity
It’s been a fab response, which just shows there is a need to shake up the industry, meaning
- better publishing opportunities for diverse & underprivileged writers
- more book prizes for writers from these backgrounds
- more people employed in book world from diverse backgrounds
My heart was broken yesterday when I lost my oldest brother. He was my rock and my biggest cheerleader. My world will be a darker place without him in it.
Hug your loved ones. Remember to appreciate the small moments.
Cancer really is cruel.

My daughter is 14 today.
I know all mums sat this, but I think she’s bloody amazing. She’s faced discrimination regarding her autism and risen above it. She now is a passionate LGBTQ+ warrior and a gifted designer
I’m so proud of my talented, principled, intelligent girl
England might not have won the final but they’ve won the heart of the nation. They have shown courage, skill & belief.
They’ve inspired future generations

When I was 7ish I wrote my first book, Muddles the Mouse on a typewriter like this. I sent the wonky doc, to Penguin Later I received books in the post and a letter telling me not to give up
I didnt! All these years later & Penguin will be publishing my adult book next Spring.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable now with the

The diagnosis is being presented like it's the end of the world. For many parents, for us, it was a relief.
Autism isnt a illness to fear. It's a difference to embrace.

My daughter is furious because shes just discovered (at 13) that I made up "white carrots" in an attempt to get her eating parsnips. In my defence, it worked. As did "Spanish peas" (dont ask)
Were you told anything in childhood that you discovered much later weren't true?
My husband doesn’t remember these mini keyboards with music books included. Does anyone else? These were a big feature of my 80s childhood! I learnt to play Happy Birthday to You on them 😂
I would love to see Ghost Town get to Christmas Number 1
1. It’s a perfect tribute to the legendary Terry Hall
2. It’s a song that perfectly sums a messed up, Tory run, decimated country
3. It’ll stop Ladbaby getting the spot again (donate directly to food banks instead)
Aged 19 I was dumped & upset. That night I dreamt of my late grandad. He put a veil on my head & told me I would marry. I was in a kitchen I didn’t recognise
2yrs later I dated a new man. He took me to meet his parents. Immediately I recognised the kitchen
Reader - I married him
I’ve just found out some devastating personal news. I might not be on here for a bit.
Life is short. Hug those close to you. Make sure they know you love them xx ❤️
@clareswatman
The video has been deleted but it was pretty shocking
“Apparently we have a dinner lady…” (laugh, laugh) “and a steelworker with us..” (more laughs)
I don’t care about Will and Harry
I care about people dying because they can’t get treated in hospital
I care about people not being about to feed themselves, or keep themselves warm this winter
I care about the huge number of children struggling with mental health conditions
As a child, one of my greatest fears was of spontaneous human combustion. There used to be an awful photo of burnt leg and slipper that gave me nightmares (still does)
Why was that such a thing? I dont hear people talking about it now!

Anxiety really is a horrible condition. I’m reaching out to anyone who might also be struggling.
The overthinking, the isolation, the self doubt is totally paralysing. And those that don’t suffer can never really understand.
I will get through. I always do, but it’s still hard x
I keep reading posts saying that there is no market in books for female voices over 40
Not only is this baffling (women over 40 make up a huge readership) but surely it’s another example of women being made invisible after a certain age. We see it in film and TV and now in books
Day 2 and yet again my daughter is in bits
On her own, ignored, other girls giving her nasty looks. Yet the school keep telling me she’s fine
It’s not just about the grades though is it? It’s the heart too. And hers is breaking.
Horrible day
Holiday is cancelled. I have Covid. What I thought was hayfever is the b*****d virus. Daily testing didnt pick it up.
I've been so careful & taken all precautions. This holiday was to help us all, especially my teen whose anxiety is through the roof
Sobs forever.
When I was young, about 5 or 6 my mum used to smuggle home sheets of this paper from the factory she worked in, for me to write on. I can still remember sitting on my bed, writing out my adventures between the light green lines.
I always hoped that one day I would be an author
I think it might be time for me to embrace my grey/white hair again
I do miss it. I just don’t miss some of the comments (ie “why are you letting yourself go”) Growing it out will be hard too
Hair dye is expensive and a faff. I’ve been white since I was 20. Why am I hiding it?
Did anyone else’s mum ever say “there’s enough blue in the sky to make a Dutch man a pair of trousers…”
I swear this is the most nonsensical and borderline dodgy expression I heard as a child.
Remembering the time I met someone I knew from school at a party. He’d been very shy, a bit geeky. I was drunk
“How are you?” I asked
“Well I’m still a virgin…”
I spent ages telling him that didn’t matter & he’d find someone right soon until he said
“No, I’m still AT Virgin.”

It amazes me how an Eton educated white man with a plummy accent can say ‘let bodies pile up’ & there’s barely a reaction
Yet a working class woman, disturbed by rising poverty & escalating need, lets rip & there is outrage
The priorities in this country are shocking

I will always be grateful that I was able to access the full grant for university. Without it, I know i never would have gone and my life would’ve taken a different route.
I was the last year of the grant system. I still think it should have been kept for the poorest families,
Did you have a rubbish Careers Adviser or careers advice at school?
I remember telling mine that I wanted to be a writer or a Careers Adviser 😂 She immediately became flustered. Gave me information about doing an English or Business degree and recommended I consider teaching.
I have a pulmonary embolism. I’m in tears. First holiday abroad in years will need to be cancelled - so I feel guilty too.
Honestly these past few months have been the worst ever

My son is now quite poorly.
It's hard to concentrate in anything else when you see your little ones suffering
I hate this virus and I despise the people who claim it's just a "cold".
I love being a school librarian
Not only do I get to recommend lots of lovely books to students, but I see the same familiar faces coming in at break & lunchtimes.
The school library was a safe and secure place for me growing up. It's such a vital part of the school community
A week ago, after my brother died I was so upset because I couldn’t find a certain photo of me and brother. It’s one that always made me happy.
And then today this popped up on my Facebook memories. Like a sign
I'm so pleased that my adult debut deal has been announced. Its always been a bit of a dream to be published by Penguin Random House and I really think Duckling has the perfect home at

You did not make the short list - your book will still be read
You did not make the bookshop - your book will still be bought
You did not make the review - your book will still be loved
You did make it as bestseller - you are still a valid author.
Your book matters. So do you ❤️
I really thought that by the time I was in my 40s I would be kick arse and empowered, and not still sobbing and feeling insecure because of someone else’s actions
I’m fine btw, but I really do need to learn that that I am good enough and if you don’t like me, that’s fine too x
Have you ever embarrassed yourself by mishearing?
I once saw an old school friend & asked him how he was
“Oh I’m ok,” he said. “I’m still a virgin though.”
“Oh never mind,” I replied. “You’ll meet the right person one day.”
He looked at me alarmed “I said I’m still AT Virgin.”
Can someone please explain the hypnotic effect that Boris Johnson has on so many people?
Why do so many find this over privileged, deceitful and immoral man so “charming” and “charismatic” is beyond me.
Are we being drugged?
Things I wished I’d known when I first got published with 7 Days in 2015 (a thread) I hope this helps some
1. Enjoy the highs. The announcements, seeing your book in print for the first time. Never forget the achievement you have made! You are awesome for this alone 👏🏻
I honestly don’t understand how being “woke” is used against people as some kind of negative slur
Being aware. Having your eyes wide open. Not sleep walking into things….
How is any of this bad?
My ambition as a child, was to get a book published at a younger age than Jayne Fisher of Garden Gang fame. She was 9 and my hero at the time.
Alas, I failed, but I never stopped writing. I'm still blown away by how talented Jayne was.
For 50 yrs women were banned from playing football in this country.
As a girl growing up in the 80s and 90s, I didn’t play football at school. Girls football was always seen as a bit of a joke
The Lionesses & their sisters before them have fought to get here. Who’s laughing now
I’ve never had a hairstyle that’s generated so many comments. It’s so lovely having women coming up and telling me how much they love my crazy style
Growing out grey doesn’t have to be aging. It can be fun and creative ❤️
Its sad that the books that are often the most popular in school libraries (aside from Wimpy Kid, DW etc) are often the ones rarely promoted and shouted about elsewhere. Quiet authors, midlist, but popular with kids.
Working in a library has opened my eyes to this even more.
Re: class. I remember going for interviews after graduating. V.posh firms. One interviewer scoffed at the school I attended and made me repeat words
At another interview, a female interviewer made a comment about my suit being “cheap” & I might want to invest better
I didn’t fit
