@Chasten @Mike_Pence We had a kid in NICU for 3 months plus in 22, ventilator, etc. Didn't get the leave u 2 got & when our kid recovered & we were flying home to family, we were bumped due to DOT fiasco. U have a beautiful fam but yr spouse failed us. Take the leave, but yr hubby should do his job.

Final for today: Poor Garza trynna spray-paint an Iraqi helmet after he got chewed out for losing his... But the experiment in wearing an enemy helmet did not go well. He was shot at with a .50 Cal by Marines later on who mistook his profile for Iraqi.... Luckily they missed.

I took more portraits of the men. (Shady B here.) Most were about 20. Trained, given guns & this night told in 48 hrs they were going to crash through the border with explosives, shoot people & destroy property. It's a fairly exciting thing to hear at that age, or any #GenKill20

Some of the men who ambushed us in Muwafakiya. As I wrote, Colbert took out the first guy on the left while humming Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown." Papers on the dead men showed they were college students from Syria who'd come to Iraq to wage "jihad," but this is how it ended.

One thing I enjoyed about witnessing military culture as an outsider was seeing the ability of soldiers to sit around endlessly debating wildly different opinions, while simply enjoying the different views of the friends or strangers who might be gathered.

My original plan for Generation kill was to profile one of the jihadists captured in this ambush. And write about his journey from Syria to this encounter on the road, where they took all of this effort and emotion and training to work to kill us, but then lost their lives.
