“My next car will be electric” - everyone I know when they find my Twitter account
If we want better streets, lively neighbourhoods & equal access to transportation we need to design our cities so people have the option to drive less. Electric or not we have a driving problem.

After 3 years of going Dutch with
@plainbicycle
I treated myself to a new omafiets. Made in NL🇳🇱 it came with the bell, skirt guard, chain guard, rack, lock, dynamo headlamp & rear light. That isn’t special, it’s standard
Dutch bikes are simple tools for urban transport
I just had a man physically assault me because he didn’t like how I was riding my bicycle.
I was changing lanes out of the bike lane on McDermot so I could turn left at Rorie. He walked in front of my bike a slapped me, telling me the bike lane is over there. I’m ok but shaken.
The solution isn’t lowering

It’s building more resilient cities where people don’t need to rely on the high cost of owning a personal vehicle. Build better transit. Invest in cycling infrastructure & the pedestrian experience. Elevate people across all income levels.
My transportation costs for 2022 were $1820 or $152/month
Car co op 1120
Bicycle repair 138
Car rental & gas 260
Uber 57
Bus fare 245
In 2022 the avg cost of owning a 2017 Civic in CA was 11,856/yr or 988/month
This doesn’t incl. depreciation, parking, winter tires or accidents
In Holland 2/3 of elementary & 75% of high school students walk or bike to school.
By enabling safe & active travel, Dutch cities prevent an estimated 1 million car journeys to school each morning.

I could climb any hill & rode for hours without tiring
Gov’ts should be doing everything to build & maintain cycling infrastructure & provide e-bike incentives to reduce congestion & pollution in cities
Anyone who criticizes

aren’t just for exercise, e-bikes make cycling an accessible form of transportation for longer distances, errand running & even business meetings. Think faster walking or an alternative to driving Think freedom

Curbing Traffic
In Delft many intersections give pedestrians & cyclists the right of way
Cars instead of pedestrians or cyclists must trigger a ‘beg button’ to stop human traffic. This maintains the motion of cyclists & advantages pedestrians

I’ve endured a lot of verbal abuse on my bike, it’s never ok but today I wasn’t even pulling an illegal road move to keep myself safe. I changed lanes. I’m a vulnerable road user but never have I felt as vulnerable as now. I usually shake it off but this was especially aggressive

You don’t need special clothing to get around by bike
If you dress for the destination & not the ride you realize the bicycle can be a practical tool for everyday transportation
I bike upright & I agree whole heartedly. Biking for me isn’t for speed or fitness. It’s faster walking, freedom of mobility & doing daily tasks enjoyably without a car. It also makes the bicycle more accessible & comfortable.
@BrentToderian
‘I’m not a cyclist, I’m just riding my bike’ sums up my philosophy on cycling.
It’s how I get around, it’s easy going, anyone can do it and you don’t need special equipment to try.
I speak more to everyday Dutch cycling in Part 1 of Plain Bicycle:
🎧
My light in 2020 was the adventures I had on my bicycle. Not being able to travel I discovered new corners of my city, falling in love with the storefronts of Sargent Ave & the old Cottonwoods lining the banks of the Red River.
“Cyclists are the happiest commuters, arriving to work or school in better moods than those who drive solo or ride the bus, according to new research from the University of Minnesota that looked at daily travel behavior and emotional well-being”

The Dutch Bicycle, the perfect ‘goldilocks’ transportation tool
For when it’s a bit too far to walk (>1 km), but when driving or the bus seems a bit silly (<5km)
Ah, it feels just right.
@plainbicycle
@modacitylife
There is a simple joy to riding your bicycle. I advocate for cycling as a transportation tool but perhaps more importantly it does wonders for your mental health. My nightly rides through the city make me feel free and reset my brain like nothing else could. Ride for the joy
It takes a lot of energy and water to mine lithium, maybe we should aim for less cars instead of electric cars. Not to mention the energy to charge the batteries. We need to discuss the full impact of EVs not just that they replace fossil fuels.
This safety clothing guide by MPI makes cycling seem like a dangerous activity. To make cycling safer we need safer spaces to cycle & to encourage more ridership by showing people on bikes in normal clothes. Riding a bike is not an extreme sport and doesn’t require full PPE.
Multimodal cities are equitable. If we build cities for cars we build for 1 group. If we build for cars, pedestrians, transit & cyclists we provide options & no matter your age, gender, socioeconomic status or physical ability you have access to the city

What makes a Dutch bike the perfect tool for everyday transportation?
Omafietsen come complete with all the parts needed to transport you & what you are carrying without the need for special gear
For more on this listen to Plain Bicycle Part 1:
Today a male cyclist yelled “you have to stop at the stop sign missy” when I slowly rolled through, not a car or pedestrian in sight. In case I wasn’t heard:
1. Bikes are not cars
2. Im barely going faster than a pedestrian, a pause & look is fine
3. Never call a woman missy
Omafietsen are designed so you can ride them comfortably in any clothing, in any weather and perform everyday tasks by bike, like going to work or picking up groceries

The amount of car expense deniers in the replies is epic but not unsurprising.
A recent CAA study in Canada had the average car cost per year outside of gas & parking to be 8-10k CAD for a car and 10-12k CAD for small truck or SUV which has become the standard personal vehicle
Urgent storm supplies warning. Both Safeway and Shoppers in OV are out of mini eggs. If you are desperate Safeway still has some Eggies, but we all know they aren’t the same.
Leaving Portage and Main closed is a safety issue, especially for women @ night in

The pandemic has caused me to reflect on grocery shopping & spending. I realized I spend about half of what I used to on groceries & waste less since I became car-free. Why? I now only buy what I can carry. It causes me to reflect on each item & make better purchase decisions.
Today I waited for a bus that was ‘4mins away’ for 20mins before it disappeared
Luckily I live somewhere where I can walk to another route
I can understand driver shortages but digital data should be updated to remove buses from the schedule that will never show

I don’t even know where to start with this article and the accompanying photo. If we want more people to cycle let’s cut the sports imagery, let people know they don’t need a racing bike & provide them with safe separated infrastructure.

Consideration of the entire network is important in creating cycling gender equity. Delft’s cycling network plan was a success because households were asked what barriers they face to cycling for transport. Convenience was key. Direct routes.

Cyclists on sidewalks are canaries in a coal mine.
Everyday cycling & vehicle traffic don’t mix safely. If we want cyclists off sidewalks we need to give them safe separated infrastructure
Until then the sidewalk is sometimes the best option
Promoting cycling to work changes transportation behaviour long term
Incentivizing biking to work reduced car trips by 24% per week, 19% long term
Providing a flexible travel allowance encourages driving, increasing driving by 30%, 24% long term
It’s interesting that when you post a fun video of riding your bike in the snow people get really angry & need to tell you how wrong you are for not driving. No one said you should bike in everything at all costs. I don’t. But I like to have transportation options beyond driving.
I got one of my bikes outfitted with winter tires this year. The hope is that I can still comfortably ride to work & for fun in the evening this winter, even if I skip those extremely cold days. Wish me luck.
What would a city designed by women be like? Our cities are predominantly designed and built by men. This BBC piece investigates how

Likely preaching to the choir on Twitter but local is better in so many ways.
Suggesting people should drive less and that we can build cities that better support this makes a lot of men on Twitter mad.
No one is taking away your car bro. You can keep overpaying for your transportation if that makes you feel free.
I purposely didn’t buy chips at the grocery store today so I have an urgent need to try to walk to 7-11 during the “worst snow storm in decades” this week
#mbstorm
“Did you bike today?”
The answer is no, yesterday I did, and tomorrow I likely will bike again
Today I bussed
And that is why multimodal options are important for sustainable, equitable cities
Choices allow you access to your city for different tasks in different conditions
This is either an argument for owning a good lock, a pink bike &/or a dirty bike. Our parkade was broken in to today, U locks snapped & mine was spared
For active transport to be feasible in cities, secure bike storage in multi-family bldgs & affordable bikes are important
It’s interesting how recently the Netherlands made significant changes in policy to change human behaviour & reduce car trips by making biking, walking & transit the simpler easier choice
20 years ago was 2001, it wasn’t that long ago, streets aren’t really set in stone
Just 20 years ago, cars could freely enter and park in Delft’s historic core.
Then a center-left coalition narrowly (19-18 votes) passed an autoluwe binnenstad (‘low-car city center’) policy.
Now not a single resident or merchant misses the days when cars choked their streets.
Old storefronts soon to be new again. Reactivating and restoring South Main Street in
#Winnipeg
from 1882’s Fortune Block. New wood storefronts identical to the originals.
Cycle networks are more important than paths. To make cycling a viable form of transportation, cycling routes need to lead you places you want to go.
See how the Netherlands implemented this in Together We Cycle last day to watch today!

This downtown
#Winnipeg
bike lane has been a transportation game changer for me.
I am still riding in ice & snow because I feel safe separated from traffic. It’s more important than ever to have physical separation from traffic in difficult weather.
The other issue is considering streets for peak traffic volumes. COVID-19 was an experiment in traffic evaporation. When all the cars disappeared & people wanted more space to walk, we saw how much of our city space was given to cars, & how little to people.
The weather changed pretty quickly in

Thankful for some bike lanes to help guide me home, but wished the Assiniboine one was kept clear enough to use. Ended up risking the road for that portion of the ride.

Counted 40 cars drive past me on Osborne while waiting for the bus. 3 had more than 1 passenger, they had 2. My 18 bus is so crowded it’s hard to stand. As a city we need to shift priorities and start thinking about sustainable, functional ways of moving people.

Well, I guess I’m a winter biker now... totally planned.
I have to say if it wasn’t for the new downtown bike lanes I wouldn’t even attempt getting home along side traffic. The separation makes it so much safer, especially in rough weather.
