I went to a Ukrainian evangelical church service today in Manhattan, and the back quarter of the church was full with members of a Korean church that the Ukrainians know. They all just showed up to be with them today.
My dad died this week. A friend said to me that when you lose someone you love, the world feels less like home. My dad taught his kids to care deeply about the world, however hostile it is.
When I got a copy of the Ravi Zacharias investigation this afternoon, I simultaneously wanted to throw up and cry. So many awful details, especially given the treatment of

in the public square since 2017.
RZIM CEO Sarah Davis told employees this morning that RZIM "cannot and should not continue to operate as an organization in its present form, nor do we think we can simply rename." Will become a grant-making organization. Layoffs will begin tomorrow.
On 1/24 I'll start as a staff writer on the news team at

Hi, World readers: sorry to share that I’m leaving the magazine. Been 13 years full of great adventures: Watching DC Washington sing. Meeting a big-hearted homicide detective in Baltimore. Instant coffee w NYC grandmasters at a chess championship. Thanks for coming along.
The gathering for Tim Keller's service yesterday was a picture of the local church in NYC and the global church: staff from the Bowery Mission and Open Hands Legal Services. Queens pastors. Church planters from Europe and Africa. "small eva"
The PCA, meeting as a denomination this week, has a robust system of governance. But it is often using that system of governance to ignore abuse survivors rather than listen to them.
Some perspective on the high and inaccessible perch chosen this morning by Flaco, the

World’s latest cover story is by Larry Schweikart, a guy who called Jan 6 “Patriot Day” where politicians “fled like little children.” World had a reporter in danger inside the Capitol that day. Our staff prayed for her. It saddens me to see this direction.
Good news alert:
Almost exactly a year ago I wrote about an Afghan translator we left behind, and his US commander who was trying everything to get him out.
It's been a tough year for James. But over the weekend...he landed in the US!
The US is currently providing treatment for 20 million HIV/AIDS patients. Patients have to be on these drugs the rest of their lives.
Now it looks like the 5-year reauthorization of PEPFAR is not going to happen -
This morning two Springfield hospitals were locked down due to bomb threats. Local pastors were planning a community prayer walk today - they told me they’re hoping it can still happen
Pastors in Springfield, Ohio, said the social fabric of the community has been ripped apart, with real-world consequences for locals and immigrant neighbors in their own churches. Most Haitians there are Christians.
@emlybelz
reports for CT:
I’m in Texas for the filming of The Chosen’s feeding of the 5000, and tired extras in full biblical costume keep limping into the hotel where I’m staying and heading to the ice machine. 100 degrees today
Just got off the phone with this translator, James, who worked/fought alongside the US military for 7 years, since he was 18 yrs old. His kid was singing and imitating his English in the background. I can't believe we are leaving these people.
Getting a bunch of new followers and I just want to disclose that it's my mother who has done work in Afghanistan,
@MindyBelz
. I just have a rug that she brought back.
Just got word that James, the translator we've been following who has trying to get out, barely dodged the suicide car bombing at the airport. He's ok.
Federal class action lawsuit just filed on behalf of donors against RZIM and Ravi Zacharias’ estate over misuse of funds. Appears to be the first federal lawsuit against the org.
Here's our report on the new Ravi Zacharias evidence, with links to the full report from the private investigators. Please do read if you were skeptical of the previous allegations.
The Glossip case has people wrestling with their position on the death penalty in real time -
"I’m shaken because of what I’ve seen of our system. … I don’t know where I stand, to tell you the truth.”
Met some folks from early days of Redeemer in town for Tim Keller's funeral, including the then-art student who designed the "R" for Redeemer's logo. Nice to think about the many 20-somethings who helped build that church.
One time my toddler sister wandered off (oops), and a police officer stopped her and asked where her mom was. “Sudan,” she replied. My mom was there interviewing the head of the rebels.
Thankful for God’s protection to reach this season of “fruitful dormancy.”
Personal news: I've resigned my position at
@WNGdotorg
with gratitude for 30 yrs reporting, of seeing up close a world of beauty and of need. The fuel for such work isn’t found in viewpoint journalism, and as WNG takes new directions I will too.
[news] Alliance University, formerly Nyack College, is closing as of Aug 31 as a result of losing its accreditation. The board decided last night, and informed staff, faculty, students today. A historic loss to NYC. School has been around 140 years.
Someone told me to go to this locally owned cigar shop by Tops because it’s a community hub. Within about 15 mins of walking in, I had three different people introduce themselves and ask if I was saved.
It’s been two months since the last US military evacuation plane left Kabul. James the translator hasn’t escaped, but he is still alive. Finding slivers of good news on a Monday.
Before the war, Ukraine's military didn't have chaplains. Now it has 160.
Photojournalist Joel Carillet went to the frontlines with the new chaplains for CT -
Without reauthorization, PEPFAR can continue via the appropriations process, but people with experience say that it will result in the program's death by a thousand cuts. Everything becomes negotiable.
We continue to follow the unfolding situation of James the translator, just can't share details right at the moment. Please pray for supernatural protection for him and his family.
Picking up some reporting where others left off....
400 Afghans ready for evacuation had to leave safe houses because donations dried up. "When you’re their handler...It’s a super heavy burden to bear," said one Afghan vet.
CT is excited to expand our in-depth reporting and storytelling with two new reporters: staff writer
@emlybelz
and global staff writer
@SophiaLeeHyun
.
They will be joining our team in the weeks and months ahead. Looking forward to more great coverage in
@CTmagazine
in 2022!
Reported on the situation in Ohio yesterday, published a piece today. Just now one of the Springfield pastors texted me that multiple schools had been evacuated/closed over threats. Just awful all around.
I got through by phone to one family member in Asheville - they feel totally cut off. She was saying a country music station was reading messages of people looking for loved ones on air + even 911 messages bc no one can communicate. And roads are all closed so they can't leave
A friend sent me Lamentations 3 this morning. The whole thing is good. "My eyes will flow without ceasing, without respite, until the Lord from heaven looks down and sees; my eyes cause me grief at the fate of all the daughters of my city."
A few days ago I accidentally ordered 4 pounds of animal crackers...but turns out this week did in fact need a truckload of bland cookies.
Big losses in the departures of
@MarvinOlasky
@angela818
@SophiaLeeHyun
from World. May God's face shine on them.
This news hasn't been publicized much, but I've gotten notes from inmates in NJ, NY, and Mass who have started getting vaccine doses.
One in Mass who lost a cellmate said his entire facility was scheduled to get the second dose this week.
In other news my family in Asheville has better cell service today … I’m boggled at the work the thousands of linemen from all over the country have done to get systems back online. One of my relatives sent this last night - utility trucks as far as the eye can see
I covered Obama's 2008 inauguration. It was bitterly cold and the person sitting next to me gave me his gloves because I was trying to write with shivery hands. Thank you whoever you were. Back in DC now to cover this inauguration, & hoping for more free gloves.
Wow, Sound of Freedom has now pulled in $85m at the US box office. Was 2nd to Mission Impossible over the weekend.
I interviewed anti-trafficking ministries + law enforcement about the movie – they overall liked but wanted audiences to have more context
I was in Newtown covering that shooting ten years ago, and now I’m going to funerals in Buffalo, and then this. Pastor Betty Pierce Williams at a funeral today: “When our hearts are overwhelmed, lead us to the rock that is higher than us.”
The last piece I did for World was about Dr. Juvenal Musavuli, a Congolese surgeon working at a Liberian hospital. He is the coolest, so I’m happy to see such great photos of him from Liberian photojournalist Carielle Doe.

Hi Gabe. The PCA is considering multiple abuse overtures at its meeting this week, so that's why we considered it relevant to discuss now. The PCA is a denomination I grew up in and have affection for.
Before the PCA GA this week: an overture on Sarah Young, author of Jesus Calling, who died in 2023. To form a committee on whether the PCA should repent of not disciplining her for idolatry. Compares it to repenting of slavery? Wild.
Another Dallas pastor removed over an "inappropriate relationship" -- Steven Lawson, who is known in Reformed circles.
I've heard from several Dallas pastors who are very discouraged.
I just spoke with Ali, the translator who made it out of Kabul (his bro-in-law James, also a translator, has not). Said his kids almost got crushed in the crowds at the airport. For 12 hrs, would try to press thru to the US checkpoint, then give up to keep the kids from fainting
PS. There are people I love who still work for World. It's leadership that has chosen to go this way. They can change course anytime!
Also if you want to read Harvest's (then a World reporter) gripping account of being there Jan 6:
Starting at 18, every day, left his badge at the US base, emptied pockets of signs of working for Americans, deleted stuff from his phone, told only one person he was on his way home to avoid an attack. Imagine living that way for years.
On this day a year ago, Mt Sinai + Samaritan's Purse built a field hospital in Central Park, when Mt Sinai was overrun with Covid patients.
Today we hear that all adults in NY will be eligible for vaccines in a week. Something else.
With a new year I was thinking about a Seder tradition that someone I interviewed shared with me.
The leader says, "If the Lord had brought us out of Egypt, but not split the Red Sea" and the people respond, "It would have been enough for us."
I highly recommend watching the documentary "Navalny." It's jaw dropping, inspiring, heartbreaking. in it Yulia Navalnaya shows what it looks like to have grace "under bad circumstances"
I just saw Yulia Navalnaya last night, who told me she had finally figured out what to tell people when they asked about Alexey Navalny: “he’s doing well under bad circumstances.” Sources close to the family say she didn’t know. “They killed him today,” a source said.
On the positive side of PCA intellectual life... I am re-reading Kelly Kapic's You're Only Human. Excellent. "When prayer ceases, the weight on my shoulders increases"
On the subway last night, an Australian woman was asking two random Mets fans to explain baseball to her. They briefly went over the basics before launching into the story of how the Astros cheated their way to a World Series
It's not like the US govt doesn't know who he is and what he has done over the years. "The US has all my information. If I put one finger on that biometric machine, they will know everything."
I'm reading "Language City" which is about the 700 languages spoken in NYC. Most linguistically diverse city in the world, and largest foreign-born population of any metro area in the world.
What a country, happy 4th.
Christian billionaire Bill Hwang found guilty just now in Manhattan federal court of racketeering, fraud, market manipulation for the Archegos blowup that evaporated $100B from markets.
Mood was funereal among his Christian supporters in court. Story coming soon
So far James the translator has hit every wall to escaping. It's a worsening situation. He's hiding & hoping, but very discouraged. "It’s been really hard for me waiting every day that I will receive a call or a message, [thinking] I’m eligible, they will get me out of here."
Lot of nonsense going on in the world, so it's important to announce that I beat my friend's 8 year old kid in chess. I think it will be the only time this happens because he has beaten me in every game til now, and the future belongs to him.
Judge Hellerstein: My ruling is that the indictment is legally sufficient.
Defense sputtering about Count 10, citing 2d Circuit Charles Schwab case
Judge Hellerstein: Motion denied. I'll issue a short summary order- until then I reserve the right to change my mind
Kudos to Lynsey Barron and her team for doggedly uncovering so much in a short time. And kudos to RZIM for sharing the full report. But the amount of evidence they found in a short time is very disturbing.
I went to a Ukrainian evangelical church service today in Manhattan, and the back quarter of the church was full with members of a Korean church that the Ukrainians know. They all just showed up to be with them today.
A number of readers told me over the last year they were praying for this man. In a time when news stories come and go in an hour's time, I appreciate the love and attention people gave to a stranger.
I heard from
@water_mission
- an org that usually responds to disasters overseas. NC govt just approved the org to bring its mobile water treatment systems to Western NC. Yesterday they were flying in treatment systems to rural Appalachia. Water is the biggest need currently
Since sabbatarian mailmen are in the news today...
a tidbit I learned from
@collinhansen
's biography of Tim Keller is that Tim and Kathy both passed the USPS carrier test and were offered jobs in 1975. But that's also when he was offered his first pastorate.
Interested to see if researchers figure out how (it appears) Africa escaped big covid mortality. In Malawi, a hospital I visited in the capital hasn't had a covid admission in a month. A rural hospital I visited said they had 18-20 covid deaths total, & they test most patients.
Shabbat Shalom. Rabbi Erica Gerson and her husband Mark, who host a great Shabbat dinner and are the friendliest people in NYC, just gave.....$18m to a network of small Christian hospitals in Sub-Saharan Africa. Really significant for these often overlooked, rural places.
I interviewed millennials about how 9/11 shaped their lives. Someone who lost a sibling in Iraq. Young NYer who decided to live close to her family here forever after that.
It's a good time to reflect on the arc of your life!
Magnus Carlsen, reigning world chess champion for 11 years, announced last week that he won’t defend his champion title next year.

on what his decision teaches us about finitude:
A new survey shows a lot more evangelicals (70%) say the US has a moral responsibility to accept refugees.
Back in the old days of 2018, 25% of white evangelicals said the US had a responsibility to accept refugees
In other Olympic news... I interviewed gold medalist Kyle Snyder, who was a delight. His thoughts on faith, the culture of kids' sports, and dealing with a big following on social media -
