Hi

@AdrianneLReid
and I are undertaking research exploring bullying within the EP profession
We are seeking as many qualified EPs as possible to complete our survey.

So errr...I've won one of this year's
@BPSOfficial
Distinguished Contribution to Practice awards 🫣
This is exciting and humbling, esp. as the focus was on my engagement, influence + impact work in educational psychology
#TwitterEPs
Lots of thanks here:
Delighted to share - Hope it's a helpful paper to bring
#resilience
to mind when planning for
#schoolreopening
.
There is a risk that the narrative around school transition... becomes dominated by the language of risk, trauma, damage...

1/ Sharing this because I came across it
@BristolUni
Royal Fort Gardens a few weeks ago, I had no idea, and the story is remarkable.
This is Henrietta Lacks. Her statue is the first public statue of a Black woman made by a Black woman to be permanently installed in the UK.
Well after 8 years at my current LA, I've made the decision to resign. It's a big step and one that brings nervousness, uncertainty and excitement for the future - not quite sure what's next, yet...but looking forward to the journey!

Well, good a time as any to share the news!
From January I'll be taking a 10 month career break. Doing a bit of travelling, restoring, slowing down and enjoying.
Lots of projects will carry on (
@edpsyuk
,
@BPSOfficial
) but really looking forward to this change and chapter
Finally framed...(!) Like 6 months later 😆 might be cheesy, but receiving this for public engagement work, and enhancing the influence and impact of educational psychology with a focus on openness and accessibility meant a huge amount!

Black children, especially boys, being labelled as aggressive / defiant / non-compliant is *not* historical - it happens every day...but you know...systemic racism isn't an issue.

SUPER excited as we launch a community driven 'Plain English in Educational Psychology' project.
Today starts phase 1 - gathering examples of jargon

EP words and phrases we could swap out for plain English...I'd love to hear your ideas and/or alternatives!
Co-constructed - did it together
Setting - school/playgroup/nursery etc
Assessment - working out what's going on
Person centred plan - plan

Well that's it! After 8 years at Gloucestershire (2 as a TEP), today is my last day. I've learnt alot, made many friends and hopefully made a small difference.
Here's to finding out what's next!

Today Year 2 learnt the importance of making instructions really clear and easy to follow. Who knew making a jam sandwich would be so difficult?🤷🏼♀️🥪

So fed up with aggressive and 'macho' language around covid restrictions. 'Tough' national lockdown...why is it like this?
I'd rather a 'compassionate' lockdown, an 'intelligent' lockdown, a 'well-considered' lockdown.
1/ 🧵 A short thread about the climate crisis and inequality - particularly as today is set to be a record breaking day.
The key message is that climate driven occurrences, like heat extremes, do not affect all children equally

Never delivered a baby, but in solidarity with
@DrBiden
and in recognition of the 8.5 years of solid work to achieve my goal of becoming an educational psychologist...I've added my hard earned Dr. to my name (for now at least!)
That was an excellent piece of TV and learning. A must watch for *all* educationalists and educational psychologist. These issues are not historical and systemic racism is not imagined.

Given remote working,
@WillPsyc
and I have created this page with an interactive 'padlet' for
#twittereps
to share their creative, remote working ideas!
Hopefully a helpful reference point because we know...there's loads of ideas! Get adding :D
Just finished
#ItsASin
and haven't cried like that for a while - one of the final scenes with Marcus, alone, particularly.
Heart wrenching story which only gives a small glimpse in to the experiences that many had.
Uplifting to witness the love, support and awareness.
In the past two (ish) weeks there have been EPs on multiple BBC radio stations, online articles, the huff post, BBC television, CBBC, government films, in print, in podcast charts...

Heteronormativity (and sexism) in action this morn when covid jab staff tell me they'd put a piece of tape on my arm to stop white t-shirt getting a stain, because "we don't want the wife to shout at you"
Years experience and still confused about how to respond
Just thinking how grateful I am for the overwhelmingly positive and supportive community and atmosphere that we have created here
#TwitterEPs
- thanks all for your kindness, curiosity, support and friendliness 🤗
@Rachel_deSouza
@educationgovuk
I would agree with many replies here. Evidence from research and practice clearly indicates that school is not the best place for the education and wellbeing of some children. The role of the CC is to promote and protect the right of *all* children, especially the most vulnerable
Both proud and excited to be marching with
@BPSOfficial
at
#pride
in London this coming Saturday.
An important moment for the society and the psychological professions.
Will any other
#TwitterEPs
or fellow Tweeps be there?
Today
@BPSOfficial
launches

We're calling on the Government to put back 10 mins of play a day in school, reversing years of decline.
We've written to

I simply cannot believe that the Chair of the 'Social Mobility Commission' enters in to their role with the view that children are naturally born into a state of sin...have I fallen through the looking glass?!?
#TwitterEPs
@SueRoffey
#education
@BPSOfficial
Exactly. Original Sin.
Children need to be taught right from wrong and then habituated into choosing good over evil.
That requires love and constant correction from all the adults in their lives over YEARS.
Moral formation is a good thing. 👍🏽
Last week 33 people offered reflections about DEdPsy course interviews - what a resource

is!
@WillPsyc
and I themed these words of wisdom over the weekend. We hope this blog supports all those with interviews in the coming weeks.

1/ What a day today has been. Our
@edpsyuk
first
#epfest

We heard from some incredible speakers today.

I'm passionate about making psychology more accessible but, it's not just about marketing. It's making our websites & resources useable by as many people as possible.
We hope you'll join on 15th April for our webinar for psychs

1/ The
@ChildrensComm
role was established to promote and protect children's rights in line with the
#UNCRC
- the role is intended to be independent, to represent the voice and needs of all children, but I'm kinda aghast reading this:
Congratulations to all those who have been offered a TEP place!
I know some people will have not been offered a place this year, but I also know our fantastic community will be here for you to support your goals.

@DECPOfficial
It is outrageous that a ban on
#conversiontherapy
would exclude trans people. All
#LGBTQIA
people deserve to be protected from this awful practice. Such an announcement is designed to try to create division within the community. Don't fall for it, we must stand together.
Solidarity to all my EP colleagues striking today. The situation in LA EP services is bad. Unreasonable workload, lack of variety, no creativity, ultimately not being able to do the job I trained for is why I left my LA EPS in 2021
Change is needed

Ah well - good news from last week. Fitness to Practise concern raised about me to the HCPC has been dismissed.
For posting on a professional forum highlighting what transphobia on that forum looks like, the accusations were that I'm a safeguarding risk to children...
When I think of those frontline workers who have stayed in hotels & airbnbs, away from their families...grandparents unable to see newborns, those bereaved unable to attend funerals... absolutely raging! 😡 This is a middle finger up to all of us

Lots of TEPs use twitter as a way to connect with potential research participants - but I think also unwittingly make is much harder for people to engage.

Wow...and with that, career break begins.
Have spent a day reading applications for next cohort which was both odd (as a final thing to do before 10 months off) but also a great privilege.
Lots of emotions right now (unexpectedly!), so I'm off for a walk!

Anyone else only discover their love for sports/physical activity/exercise after they left school and no longer had to participate in 'team sports'...?
1. This was a troubling aspect of the letter recently published in
@psychmag
. The author's online interactions with people who were hurting were inexcusable and demonstrated little to no awareness of the ethical responsibilities that a psychologist has.
2022 was such an incredible year for

Bit of a proud supervisor moment here, as Leeya presented her EP thesis research (alongside the fab Marc and Poppy) about the experiences of homeless children, young people and families - a phenomenal talk bring together three excellent pieces of doctoral research

1/ I often read, see, hear EPs discussing evidence-based practice and am frequently confused at the linguistic and semantic loops that occur because evidence is consistently assumed to *only* or *just* mean 'research findings'...

9 sec's of state for edu in 12yrs, 6 of these in the last 4y alone. The notion that this gov know the slightest thing about development, learning, teaching, schools + wellbeing is laughable. The gov have only contempt for whole sector. Malthouse's words today at
#CPC22
mean zilch
The approach of the gov and particularly the education secretary in the past few weeks is indefensible. Threatening to take LAs to court, threatening to sue teachers. Millions of children back for one day. Absent from that address was "I'm sorry"

It's not lost on me that professional body processes were weaponised against an openly gay man who is an unwavering ally for trans people...
Anyway, enough of that - now to continue with my passion for inclusion, accessibility and diversity within our profession 🙏🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
This is just unbelievable. It was meant to be a small blogging project started just after I qualified. 5 years later and wow.
So many exciting things to come - can't wait to share celebrations and gratitude with everyone that has helped make all of this possible

Meal times are such a social period of the day - it brings to mind, for me, how important meal times are in nurture interventions as a time to talk, interact, share, listen and learn, together
