Just to be clear: The only thing preventing Duke-UNC in the Final Four, and the two most annoying days of press availability in Earth history, is the Saint Peter's Peacocks. God help us all
Adonis Arms will start at point guard against Duke for No. 3 seed Texas Tech. It will be another step on one of the most unlikely journeys in recent hoops history -- from JV to juco to DII to DI -- all driven by wild self-belief.
My piece on his story:
Maybe Greg Sankey can get the NCAA to change the tournament rules so the SEC can replace teams that lose in the first round with more, worse, SEC teams
Honestly, the best news for Virginia is that this happened in 2018, when something horrifying and unprecedented happens hourly and everyone just sort of moves on
Starting to feel bad for Virginia. Yes, sure, it is their fault they can't score, but it's not their fault the selection committee didn't seem to realize this
Someone has to explain to me what Jesus Ferreira (or really any US striker) brings that Aaronson or Reyna couldn’t playing in the same areas. I just do not understand this
Sad week at the Brennan house: We said goodbye to my 14 year old lab Layla. I got her when I was 23, living with six friends in Chicago, but she made my wife and I feel like we started a family, and then became the perfect dog for three small kids. What a run. RIP girl.
Didn’t have time for this right after the game, but: Yesterday Clay Young and Sam Cunliffe said that when they win at Fortnite before a KU game, KU wins too. Tonight, sources close to the program confirmed Young and Cunliffe won a squad game last night.
Last week, The Athletic laid me off. I’m grateful for my time there and gutted it had to end.
I’ve thought a lot about it since, and it’s time to finally take this plunge.
Presenting Buzzer: Great hoops writing, all year long, made with your support.
Whatever happens the rest of the season, IU fans should cherish whatever amount of Trayce Jackson-Davis they have left. Dudes this good do not come around often.
The other night against Seton Hall, Eddie Lampkin chased down a loose ball to the sideline and then in midgame asked me, the first random person he saw sitting on press row: "You like my energy?!" I told him yes. I do like his energy!
"So what do you do?"
"I'm a philanthropist, primarily."
"Oh, wow. What sort of philanthropy?"
"Well, I don't really like to talk about my charity work, but the big one lately is I gave Indiana a bunch of money to get rid of their bad basketball coach."
The best NCAA Tournament game I ever saw: Last year, courtside, for Virginia 80, Purdue 75 -- elevated not only by a buzzer-beater but by one of the greatest performances in defeat by any player EVER. Now

Hi Internet! My wife and I had a little boy over the weekend. If you’re wondering why you won’t see anything new from me
@TheAthleticCBB
for a hot minute here, that’s why. Back shortly. See you then!
People like to hate on the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee here and there but at least they don’t just pick the Final Four and assume everyone is cool with it.
Say what you want about the First Four -- and I didn't like the change at the time, and still think the 64-team bracket is a perfect artifact blah blah -- but whoever made the call to have it in Dayton is a genius.
Tony Bennett was screaming at the refs that Adel couldn't run the baseline. The refs informed Adel with the gesticulation equivalent of an airhorn that he couldn't run the baseline.
He ran the baseline.
It's the worst thing about upsets like this. Instead of just saying "hey, it's the tournament, crazy shit happens," everyone tries to pretend like Purdue was bad all year
I’m sure there will be columns written about how Purdue choked and Matt Painter cannot win in March, but he’s a freak play away from a Final Four in 2019 and this team overachieved. He’s an excellent coach. Ignore those hot takes.
It's very funny to see civilians skip in to enjoy some fun college hoops this month only to watch them react with utter, abject horror at the state of officiating at the college level
Welcome, everyone! It's always like this
I don’t get when coaches leave jobs for millions more elsewhere, then put out a floral statement thanking everyone from the university, assistant coaches, and the players they just left behind. Then they say they will always be a member of the school’s program and family 🙄
I just don’t get when players enter the portal then put out a glossy post thanking everyone from the University, teammates, assistant coaches and head coach. Then say they will alway be a member of the schools program and family. 🙄
This is some classic Virginia tonight. Not peak Virginia, and not “hey we’ve got five shooters on the floor now, weee!” Virginia. This is the original recipe.
I strongly urge ACC fans giving me a hard time about the league being bad or whatever to watch Marquette-Creighton. You will immediately notice the difference
I don’t know what you want from your sixth year senior captain point guard but lots of turnovers and flagrant fouls and attempts to put the ball behind your back on a fast break probably aren’t on the list
The quintessential Virginia basketball moment: Jack Salt sprinted back on a Tech fast break, fouled such that he prevented a make but didn't remotely risk a flagrant foul, and received standing ovation from JPJ.
UVa was up 73-51.
Poor Virginia. They were as historically good defensively as Villanova was offensively, they went 31-3 and 17-1 in the ACC, that one loss was by one point in overtime, and they're going to be remembered for exactly one thing. The tournament is a mysterious fig.
Absolutely incredible moment at the end of UVa-Florida: Tony Bennett screaming across the floor at Cory Alexander for showing the refs an angle on a review that gives the ball back to Florida. "Do your job! Come on man!" Hahahaha
Illinois going full heel might be my favorite thing about the Big Ten right now. The Illini expect to be *better* than they were last year -- and they expect the rest of the league to hate them for it.
Massive win for VCU, and not only in terms of cost-benefit nonconference opportunity considerations but also because I get the vague impression most VCU fans no longer care very much for Will Wade
Mike Woodson might not have the most up to date ideas on the math behind benching players in foul trouble but man he sure knows how to give confidence to his guys.
Becoming increasingly obsessed with Providence. Not in a good way. In a Jake Gyllenhaal in “Zodiac” sort of way. Providence might just become my life now
It would be one thing if "never beating Purdue" was just a weird statistical quirk in an otherwise successful four-year coaching tenure but, yeah, it's not
People act like Virginia wants to be this way, when most of its great teams have scored really efficiently. This one ... doesn't, and frustrated Tony Bennett so much this year he got T'd up for (gasp) swearing
I leave Twitter for like two hours to write a story and come back to find people apparently arguing about whether Tony Bennett is a good coach, I think this web site is just melting everyone's brains
LSU had Ben Simmons playing against college basketball players and could not manage to make it to a 68-team postseason tournament. I probably think about this like two or three times a week.
It's been like 15 minutes since it happened and I still can not believe Pete Nance got T'd up for saying "gimme that shit" in a college basketball game.
I love how Dan Hurley takes a little deep breath and presents himself as a normal human for 30 seconds during halftime interviews. Dude you know the cameras are on you all game right
I have to admit it: I still get the hipster’s sick thrill out of knowing that players like Cameron Krutwig are really legitimately good months before everyone on Twitter starts making jokes about his mustache or whatever
The tournament is profoundly weird and crazy things happen therein … but not even getting to the Final Four with three (now official) top 10 picks on the same team, one of whom was Zion Williamson, is not going to look any better in the years to come
Bill Self is an underrated comedian. Asked why Dedric Lawson appeared to be frustrated on the bench: "Uh, I don't know. He probably needs to play a little better." I LOL'd
So if I'm getting this straight Duke recruited promising freshmen, improved them collectively for a first season, retained them for a second, and will add more promising young players to the mix this summer.
Bold roster-building strategy. Let's see how it plays out
Considering starting an editing service tailored to the needs of college athletes writing their transfer portal farewell posts. For a very reasonable fraction of your NIL earnings, I will ghostwrite your goodbye.
“With that being said” will never make a final draft again
So, yo, my mom went to K-State. I’m happy for K-State. But I watched way too much K-State this season and I feel like they’re basically the Pulis-era Stoke of college basketball and it’s just not my jam at all
Whatever UConn would stand to gain from realignment financially, it would lose more culturally, in a way that corrodes the whole reason college sports fans exist. Today's Buzzer:
Overheard in Charlottesville: A UVa fan responding to Jack Salt's technical with "Oh, that's poppycock!" Ha! Why, well said, old sport. Well said indeed.
I asked
@kenpomeroy
to help me prove a theory: That neutral court games are happening now more than ever. It's true. And it's really bad for the sport.
Today's newsletter, free for everyone: It's time to get games back on campus.
My three-year-old daughter is playing with the microphone I keep on a tiny tripod for podcasts, etc. She just ran into the room with it, pop filter and all, and told me to say hello. I did. She shouted "SEC FOOTBALL!" and then ran out of the room. Someone send help
Just massively stoked to say I’ll be joining up with the stellar group

Let’s get it.
I never bet on sports, but I might actually open up an account on an app for the sole purpose of betting against Louisville every time they take the floor
Sources: I’m also committed to staying in my job and will not pursue the head coaching vacancy at Indiana. I should have a chance to keep writing some decent stuff next season.
Sources: Steve Alford is committed to staying at Nevada and will not pursue the head coaching vacancy at Indiana. Wolf Pack should have a chance to win the Mountain West next season.
With hindsight it’s pretty funny that the doubt around Woodson coming in was whether he could recruit. Turns out recruiting/retention are what he’s best at
VCU’s hoops rise goes back a lot longer than you think — and began in a tiny, quietly historic little venue set to be demolished in the spring. On Franklin Street Gym and what it’s meant to the Rams.
