If you haven’t been to SF recently, it’s hard to overstate just how many Waymo driverless cars are on the road. It feels like 5-10%, sometimes two or three on every block. And what’s most striking is that they drive so perfectly you don’t even register that they’re robots.

@Nobelaureate1 @nytimes Sure, but how do you justify the selection of images? Only shows harm being done to Palestinians, Israelis being scared but safe. I agree that there is a lot of suffering in Gaza, it’s the one sided ness that’s appalling. The graph is presented in that context.

@kvogt The narrative is upside down. If you’ve been in a @Cruise , you know it is safer than the next human driven Uber you get into. @kvogt deserves so much credit for bringing this all about. Safety is paramount — let’s be fair in how we assess that across both humans and AVs.

@mwseibel Founders should be optimizing everything directly under their control for the company’s success, and that includes where they start the company. If you’re not committed for something as simple as location, will you really be prepared to make even harder decisions?

@darrenmarble This is bad advice. If you’ve raised as little as $1M you should be paying yourself subsistence salary — purely mathematically the delta on minimum vs market salary is worth way less than the risk adjusted upside to your equity. That’s what we did — have to optimize for survival.

@levelsio Everything you’ve mentioned is irrelevant. If they’ve raised $90M to get to a $100M exit… yes, that’s appropriate. So few founders understand that’s it’s not about valuation at each round, or taking/not taking VC funding — it’s about capital efficient growth along the way.

@paulg Same reason why big companies have a hard time doing new/disruptive things. The people with all the power in the org are those with the largest P&L who have a vested interest in keeping *their* revenue. In theory you could disrupt yourself, in practice it means laying people off.

Blink and you missed it: Teslas just got super cheap in 2024. A brand new Model 3 can be leased for $329/mo ($246/mo after fuel savings), and a new Model Y for $399/mo ($299/mo after fuel savings). Compare that with a BMW X3 for $541/mo or a barebones CR-V LX for $325/mo.

If you're looking for great causes for Giving Tuesday, I'm a huge fan of Climate Changemakers, a great organization supporting effective climate action. I’m proud to work with them as part of their their Advisory Board.

TIL that a single Bitcoin transaction uses ~1MWh of energy. Put another way, it uses the same amount of energy as the average US home uses in 10 days (gas and electric combined) or that a Tesla uses to drive 240 miles. One transaction. 🤯
