it has come to my attention that a local troll is attempting to maliciously out me as bisexual. it is with great regret that i must confirm this is true. i would like to take this opportunity to apologize to my community for being extremely fucking cool
talk is cheap. affordable & accessible meds and counselling for those who need it or gtfo. breaking down stigma is great but doesn't help when you're uninsured and have to choose between rent or groceries and buying your pills, or waiting 20 months for a psych intake appointment
wrote a couple weeks ago that the border panic fomented by conservatives was just the beginning of canada's "white nationalist edging" and now we're having a national discussion about whether the PM was too rude to a literal racist activist for "just asking questions." good shit.
three days under state of emergency have taught me the four key resources of newfoundland life are: smokes, beer, pepsi, and chips, in that order. (fuel is a bonus.)
control the corner stores, control the island.
My family and I geared up and hit the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean this afternoon. My Prairie-born kids loved being able to fish for mackerel on a big “lake” with no land in sight.
alright folks. sometime ago I said I had some ~personal news~ for 2019.
here it is: starting in January 2019, I will be the editor of the Newfoundland and Labrador Independent (
@IndependentNL
)
last day of st. john's SOE. we've shared some laughs & some tears.
but in the end, i think we can all agree that living in a city where you need a car to do literally anything + where a solid 1/3 of ppl are <12 missed hours of work away from bankruptcy/death is, maybe, fucked up
I'm no fan of Il Duce. But when someone says something controversial like "blood alone moves the wheels of history," the correct response is to ask "whose blood?" It's not to assume the worst and shriek. If we can't manage even this level of rationality, civil discourse will die.
[calmly inhaling a full cigarette in a single drag while thinking about how NL not collapsing by summer hinges completely on the b'ys behaving this weekend]
Some Personal News: in january 2024 i am starting the master of arts in counselling psychology program at yorkville university. i might dabble in some freelancing during my studies but otherwise i'm leaving journalism for a new career in psychotherapy. it's a very welcome change.
I’m not your typical smooth talking politician.
And I love my family. Despite whatever flaws I have, I want to ensure that the future here is bright for my loved ones and yours.
Thanks, Rachel and Olivia. I love you both.

PREMIER: we are the only province with a standalone department for the status of women
WOMEN: that's great. what is it doing
PREMIER: it has its own department
WOMEN: what does it do though
PREMIER: women's issues
WOMEN: ...
PREMIER: it's a standalone department, for your issues.
love to read an article about the problems with the canadian left that spends the entire time talking about the liberal party.
what if the biggest problem with the left in canada is that most of the people prominently writing and speaking about it don't know what it is?
something that's very cool is that mental health counselling is more or less inaccessible without private insurance. but also, non-psychologist counsellors (who often specialize in more varied/effective techniques than CBT) aren't covered much/at all by insurance. awesome system.
bashir was a student in the first class i ever taught and it has been amazing to see all the great work he has gone on to accomplish in edmonton. truly brave and genuinely good human being. really sad and angry to see him targeted for harassment by these absolute pieces of shit
"Forty years of research with women fleeing male violence has taught us that men do not just “snap” and kill their partners. When a woman is murdered by her husband or boyfriend it is the climax of a deteriorating situation. These murders are executions."
“This is what a man killing his wife looks like. It is a very frightening way to die.“ There are too many people, men and women, that I wish could be forced to read this. You know who you are.
weird how going for a nice walk in the sun makes for a better morning than rolling out of bed and immediately scrolling through all the horrible news on earth
this is my last day as the only editorial staff at
@IndependentNL
. our new assistant editor starts on monday and our full-time summer journalist a week after that. we finally built a newsroom. deadly.
RNC WHEN YOUR HOUSE GETS ROBBED AND YOU KNOW WHO DID IT AND WHERE YOUR STUFF IS: sorry, this is too much work
RNC WHEN THERE IS PEACEFUL PICKETING ACTION BY MINIMUM WAGE WORKERS: yeehaw
@RNC_PoliceNL
officers, tactical squad units & inspectors have surrounded the entire block around the peaceful picket of striking
#Dominion
workers as a riot squad waited nearby.
well, i think it's cool that a right wing corporate rag newfoundlanders once boycotted en masse ends up controlling the last remaining daily newspaper in the province so they can feed us a slow drip of brain poison before it is inevitably melted down for scrap by c-suite vultures
it's not easy being premier of newfoundland & labrador. every decision is difficult and thankless; mistakes are often treated as unforgivable. it takes a big person to do the job. so say what you will, but kathy dunderdale resigned at a press conference, not in a pre-taped video.
Today is a great day for Newfoundland and Labrador. It's been a long time coming. Months of long days and nights, negotiating and organizing and building something incredible alongside a lot of amazing people.
Today we can finally bring you the brand new
wild. i'm old enough to remember when peter mackay was a minister of the crown getting fun free trips on search and rescue helicopters while his government's response to a swine flu epidemic was sending body bags to manitoba reserves
@iD4RO
i too prefer it when i don't have to think about complicated things that make my job as a columnist too difficult and can instead just be a racist piece of shit in a national newspaper
Hello NL twitter!
We're closing in on

So if you feel the Dooley account harassed or tormented you, please DM me or email dooley

i know it's easy to dunk on that awful barbara kay column BUT i think she's providing a valuable service by demonstrating that you are as likely to get racist brain poisoning from a mainstream canadian newspaper as you are from the fringes of the dark web or whatever
takeaway from the newfoundland & labrador covid briefing this evening is that we are on the edge of perilous cliff and what happens this easter weekend will determine whether or not the healthcare system can absorb the blow. there are 57 ICU beds currently available.
STAY HOME.
If you see suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, the
@RNC_PoliceNL
would like to know about it.
Coming up just after 8:00, we hear about the crimes that are being committed and why it’s important to report them.

sincere + unpopular opinion: apply canada's aggressively health-conscious cannabis packaging laws to alcohol. wild that half the design space on a 1 g box of weed warns me about addiction & schizophrenia but a 26er of rum has just a tiny note saying pregnant women shouldn't drink
getting concerned as days go by that post-covid restructuring will look more like papering over cracks in the old world than laying a solid foundation for the new
another offshore oil spill at Hibernia, barely a day after they restarted production since the last one.
controversial opinion but maybe industry shouldn't be left to regulate itself
hot take: canada is going to spend the next few years inflicting incredible political own goals on itself and this will be in large part because a shocking number of the country's "thought leaders" do not take their ethical responsibilities as journalists/writers seriously
truly horrifying that trudeau's journalism bailout threatens to kill canada's robust free press of a half dozen toronto columnists who all share the same opinions
some of the most sage people i know never finished highschool and some of the most ignorant people i know have a long train of elite academic credentials. humility is the crown of the virtues. but also, if you want your opinions respected online, maybe don't talk out of your ass.
Quillette > Canada > My Struggle: Someone Posted "fuck off mayo boy" At Me Online When I Said Residential Schools Were Good. Is This The Death of Discourse? (20,000 word EXCLUSIVE)
man assaults two women at the palestine march in st john's, seemingly less for geopolitical reasons than because he felt inconvenienced by getting stuck in traffic. unhinged behaviour. this man has the body of an adult but the inner world of a screaming toddler. many such cases!

uber will never come to st. john's not because of insurance reasons or market size or regulations, but because they know the second a newfoundlander encounters 'surge pricing' it will dominate the local news cycle for 3 weeks and there will be riots and an international incident
it's very cool that we go to the polls in two weeks to conclude this election about nothing between two parties who have more or less abdicated anything resembling leadership in favour of saying "no you're the one who sucks" back and forth until we're all resettled into halifax

now that the embargo is over: the premier antagonized the entire provincial media apparatus over an 8 minute video that acknowledges the greene report exists, that they will do *something* about it, and that andrew furey is a doctor. questions tomorrow should be fun
morning prayer: God grant me the confidence of a fisheries minister convinced he has personally solved all racism in newfoundland and labrador by holding up the house of assembly for two days
that twitter rant from a prominent tory MP painting the media as political enemies is a little concerning. but thankfully flooding the electorate with disinformation has never worked as a political strategy and canadian journalism is an extremely stable & widely beloved industry
very, very happy to finally announce that
@IndependentNL
is growing.
we're recruiting two new volunteer members for our Board of Directors—and hiring for a paid, part-time Operations Manager position.
come help us build the future of journalism for Newfoundland & Labrador.
don't listen to the haters mr premier. another task force addressing urgent social emergencies in consultation with stakeholders through a set of nonbinding recommendations delivered sometime in the indeterminate future is a great idea. you're a good boy who deserves a gold star.
on a day of ugly weather like today, I take comfort in one of Ray Guy's loving tributes to winter in NL:
"Five solid months of blinding, suffocating, steady snow with scarcely a sign of hope. Trapped in a wretched white jail without the cheerful prospect of being hanged."
shutting down questions, one-way video broadcasts, a dysfunctional election designed to evade real discussion of "the state of the province"; at this point we have to openly acknowledge the premier and his coterie are actively contemptuous of media (and by proxy) public scrutiny.
At yesterday's COVID briefing, government placed new limits on reporters' questions, cutting them down from 5 to 3. I've just been informed by the premier's office that the new question limit will be permanent.
This is garbage.
