People with executive dysfunction are often seen as weak-willed, but to fail at starting something, over, and over, and over... And then having to DEAL with all those failures, and keep trying, despite how hopeless everything feels anyway? That takes SO MUCH mental fortitude.

I just told my neurotypical partner, "I can't 100% trust my memory recall to tell me to do important things. I HAVE to rely on external reminders. It's not that I don't believe in myself, it's that I know myself well enough that it's better not to try." I think I blew his mind.

Sometimes I think about when my ex was bragging that he was able to see what needs to be done at work without being told what to do, and I said, "It's interesting that you do that at work but not at home." And he paused and admitted he didn't have a good answer for that.

My opinion is that different people sometimes need completely different advice. So, my default stress response is to freeze. Being hard on myself only paralyzes me; "extreme" gentleness helps get me out of a freeze state. I gave a friend this advice, and it only made her worse.

I wonder if part of the reason ableds fantasize about getting sick is b/c we're so entrenched in a capitalist hellscape, rest for its own sake (without any "excuse" for needing it) is practically a foreign concept. Like, "You're only allowed this if you can no longer work."

One time I was grocery shopping in the middle of a busy day, and I pulled out my phone to check on something. An older man about a dozen feet from me saw this and said, "Millennials and their phones..." loud enough for me to hear him. I was using a grocery list app.

Fun fact: There's a reason the number that's circulated is specifically 10k. It's not based on any scientific research, someone just wanted to sell more pedometers and it was a nice round number.

Does 10k steps per day help? Or does having enough leisure time that you can consistently walk for 2 hours help

@soft_bb_bug What gets me is that they apparently don't want us driving drowsy, but if we find a place to park to take a nap so we can drive safely, we get harassed. There's no winning.

And if step 2 of 2 is the end goal, and they see you not getting to what is their step 2, well, obviously you must be struggling with step one: "I want do do the thing". 5/6

"You say this while living under capitalism." I mean I don't have a choice? I'd love to have all my needs provided for and be proven wrong but... you'll just have to take my word for it that I know what I struggle with.

@SzMarsupial I *think* they think they're portraying "grace" and a lack of need to use effort. It's supposed to look "easy". Ballet is supposed to do something similar, but dancers actually execute it well. In the tradwife videos, it just looks like they're sleepwalking.

Everyone's stress responses and coping mechanisms are different! What helps one person can make another one's life more dysfunctional. Not all advice is universal. If you follow advice and it doesn't work, maybe that advice just isn't for you.

For her, that advice made her feel not as motivated, and she ended up falling behind on a lot of things that she used to do every day. She told me, "I can't do that anymore... I *need* to be able to have clean dishes, and they just don't get clean this way."

The comments in this reddit thread are the main reason why I've been trying to avoid COVID the whole time. Some say their ADHD meds can't even touch their brain fog anymore. Having my ADHD become even more disabling than it already is terrifies me.

CN: finances I know we tend to joke about the "ADHD tax" like, "oh oops I have to pay a library fee now, lol," but I wouldn't be surprised if it also screws people up REALLY BAD, and it's just not talked about. Because financial shame is a bitch.

@saddymayo This is what healthy eating should look like IMO. Lots of variety, eating what you enjoy, eating when you're hungry, and enjoying your food without having anxiety over it. It's refreshing to see other people eating like that.

One of the things that I hate about executive dysfunction is that if I'm struggling with a task and put it off... When I finally, FINALLY am able to make myself do it, it's hard to feel proud of myself. Because it feels like everyone around me is just annoyed it took me so long.

@BlackPnwLady [Abuse] I see parallels to domestic abuse here. Abusers often appear nice in order to have a believable "good person" image. Because they were abusive 100% of the time, it would be a lot easier to see them as abusers. Abusers can be nice, but that doesn't make them good.

@StephanFrost @ADHD_Alien It took me until adulthood to realize how hard I was trying all along, because all I heard growing up was I needed to apply myself more. Help him feel validated, because he'll inevitably meet people telling him to try harder that will cause him to doubt himself.

Some sleep hygiene advice is also kinda ableist? My therapist told me to use my bed "for sleep and intimacy only" and I gave her a hard no. Sometimes I have back pain, sometimes anxiety attacks, sometimes I need to cool off after a meltdown in a dark room.

@roryreckons My last therapist tried to help me with sleep hygiene I think most of the "bad sleep hygiene" stuff exists in the same sphere of "laziness": It's not that people are being lazy/unhygienic on purpose; there are usually unmet needs going on and it just *looks* like bad habits.

To this day I'm still not sure what exactly he meant?? What I've gathered is that other people apparently go to bed way before they feel like they're running on fumes, and they relax enough that sleep slowly takes over? It sounds made up to me. lol

On an average day my brain fog is so bad, it's hard for me to recognize and organize the thoughts I have unless I spend a TON of effort, or I take my meds. My "glasses" are simply chemical, and they help me see my internal world instead of my external one.

Yes, I can technically "squint" to get by... but I don't want to spend my entire life squinting! If you think my squinting my entire life instead is virtuous somehow, that's ableist.

I was so deep into it I was scared of saying the word "don't" because of some bullshit rule akin to: "Say only what you do want, not what you don't. Saying what you don't still makes you think of it."
