Heigh ho! ‘Twas not to be. Congrats to the wonderful
@ae_stallings
, who’ll be the next Oxford Prof of Poetry. She’ll be absolutely terrific. Thanks to anyone out there who voted for me - it was an honour to be part of such a fine line-up.
Who can forget the fearless attacks on Scottish book festival funding in the 2020s which did so much to so much to stop the rise in global temperatures
I know I’m breaking the first rule of Poetry Club here but if you’re in London on the 24th September, do come along and hear me and Laird and be BOUND BY OUR SPELLS
Seem to have inadvertently acquired some followers here, so may post news of the odd gig … If anyone in Edinburgh fancies a bit of jazz guitar on Friday, it’d be lovely to see you:
If you’re in Edinburgh on Wednesday, I’ll be talking about Toy Fights at the EIBF. (Excuse the ancient photo.) There will be little mention of poetry but I’ll try to keep it funny. Come and say hi and have your book defaced afterwards
Folks - can I draw your attention to this excellent crowdfunder for an award set up in Michael’s name. It’ll help fund a place for someone to study on the Arvon Advanced Writers Programme. We’d be grateful for anything you can chip in.

are you referring to the two ‘get well soons’ you sent at the time? because that wasn’t quite the condemnation some of us were looking for.
Re Hay / EIBF vs Fossil Free Books: this is a damn sight more restrained and sensible than anything I am currently capable of posting, so let’s go with this.
@ChillyMagma
I agree, but I don’t think that’s fair on the festivals; they really were under intolerable pressure from threats of disruption. fossil free books made sure their own campaign - ludicrously, cynically and hypocritically - was closely tied to the pro-palestinian cause.
great new venture, courtesy of my friend Mhairi Owens - affordable residential writing retreats/courses in the East Neuk of Fife - please spread the word
Early bird offers on 5 day creative writing programmes from £240. Qualified tutors and noted writers with BOB residential courses. Fellow scribes and sea views! (link: )

Folks - if you’re in Wigtown, Braemar or Blairgowrie in the next couple of weeks (most likely because you live near Wigtown, Braemar or Blairgowrie) I’ll be banging on about Toy Fights … Do come along and say hi.

Tam: you can’t go trashing beautiful things that folk have nurtured and built over decades, on which other folks’ livelihoods depend, and then cry victim because you’re not being praised for it. I have said nothing inflammatory. I was only critical.
If anyone is in Linlithgow this Friday, I’ll be playing some bonny tunes and making some disturbing noises alongside the great Graeme Stephen in the lovely venue of St Peter’s Episcopal Church, 7.30 pm. Next to the chipper.

I see you’ve turned off comments.
And while I’m here - if you’re fed up with poetry and fancy some LOVELY JAZZ INSTEAD I’ll be playing with the wonderful Graeme Stephen in Peebles on the 5th of October …
Jazz alert! I’ll be playing guitar as a much younger man with some of the wonderful Playtime gang on Thurs 13th June at the Outhouse, 8pm, Broughton St Lane, Edinburgh. Come along if you’re in town

y’know. the kind o totally worthless middle-class fun day oot that appeals to the likes o us. where we can sell books and talk to readers and that. the sort of thing we should really be doing from an icey van on the scheme, or something.

the cynicism lay in FFB exploiting a highly tenuous link to achieve their aims. anyway, I’m done. Tam - have a good evening. As far as I can see all FFB have achieved is to set folk on the same side screaming at each other. they might target the actual enemy. it’s big enough.
@neilsonandrew
sorry Andrew - pathetically I don’t check this account much (haven’t quite figured out what twitter is for yet - maybe I will one day). but sure, you’re followed, so drop a line.
